View Full Version : Halo 2 XBOX Live Sometimes I get some FRUSTRATED!!!!

Sometimes I get some damn frustrated playing Halo 2 on Xbox live. I mainly play Rumble Pit. I have clocked in about 130 games. I guess my main frustration  is how some players just seem to move faster than me. They are quicker to the trigger and they seem to breeze right past me , killing me and moving on. I know if someone comes behind you they can one hit kill you. But there are sometimes when I do that and they do not die. Maybe I just need to play a little more and practice more. Here are the things I try and concentrate on.

Also I am a level 5 player and I often get matched up with level 8,9 and 10 players. So I am sooo overmatched.

This weekend I finally came in first place in a game. It was such a truimph and it pushed me to level 6, then I sucked on a few games and now I am a level 5 again. Maybe I should just enjoy it, accept being a below average player and move on. But something inside me wants to be better than average.

if anyone wants to hook up or check how bad I suck my gamer tag is vintagegamer13

I have the same problem. It always seems people destroy me in fire fights. It really all depends on the gun combo you are using, as well as if you are hitting them. Also whoever shoots first has a very high advantage.

Best combos (i havent played in awhile forgive my gun names)

Auromatic machine gun + pistol

Automatic machine gun + plasma pistol (best, charge the pistol ahead of time, score a hit and it drops all their shields, then shoot them a little and they die)

two needlers

two pistols

those are my personal favorite combos. Oh btw, always use 2 guns, you cant win a gun fight unless you have 2 guns.

I have been using that small alien weapon (charged) to drop their shields. Problem is if you miss tha shot, then you are toast. I know carrying 2 weapons increases your odds of winning in a firefight, but I sometimes like to use the sticky bombs, especially on Midship.

glad to hear its not just me

eventhough you like your sticky bombs, playing halo2 with one gun is like playing super mario on your back (upside down) you simply cant win unless you have pinpoint accuracy w/ sticky grenades or you are one lucky mofo.

Dude I am not lucky, I am usually DEAD!! and screaming at myself for being stupid.

I guess the point is use 2 weapons at all times.

Keep your two weapons, and if you come upon a big skirmish, drop one and toss the grenade. Then back up a step and hit Y again to grab your 2nd gun. It's better than carrying only one gun. It gives you options.

If you are dual-wielding, as a general rule its good to use one alien weapon and one human weapon. Alien weapons take out shields, and human weapons take out the now intangible "health". SMG+pistol is pretty good as well, but if your aiming is bad, its best to stick with the plasma rifle and SGM. In rumble pit the objective is to just get as many kills as possible, so if a suicide run looks advantageous, do it. This is not true in team slayer, where its all about simply killing more times than you die, even if you do not kill a lot. I usually have a lower number of kills, but also an unusually low number of deaths. So if you subtract deaths from kills I usually am the leader.

My problem with that game is that is always seems to put me on the losing team in Big Team Battle. I know its not just me. The statistics prove it. I seem to win only around a third of the time. I usually do better than most of my team mates too. I dont know why this is. The game just does not like me.

Sometimes I am sure I kill somebody but they do not die, and I think its due to lag.

Alternately, you could perfect what's generally referred to as the 'battle rifle combo.' This consists of a plasma pistol (which you should have charged at all times) and battle rifle (hence the name). You land a shot with it, then whip out the battle rifle. One quick burst to the head drops ANYTHING (assuming you hit the head, body shots take longer). Plasma pistol also drains a full overshield. This combo also leaves you open to throw grenades if need be. On the big maps like Coag, get a sniper or get in a ghost (and then get a sniper). In small maps with the sword, either try to grab that or have something good to counter it (rockets, shotgun). If you're worried about losing ranks or whatever, just play rumble training.

When you're dual wielding, leave the needlers unless your foe is way far off (since it homes in somewhat). The needler sucks. The pistols (plasma and magnum variety) are your best dual-wield bets.

The best thing to do is to find what YOU like using best and stick to that. On maps like midship, which you mentioned, I find having a shotgun or a battle rifle is best for me, since I can still throw stickies. Dual wielding the crap weapons there (usually plasma pistols) works, but it's usually just trading kill for kill (and remember to melee when your weapon overheats or you get in close enough!).

Using the plasma pistol isn't half bad as that also has somewhat of a homing ability (depending on the distance).

When using dual SMGs, don't just hold down each trigger. Alternate with left/right trigger presses to make sure each burst counts.

I like to use the Battle Rifle when an enemy is further away, and then rush him with an SMG for the kill.

Generally let the enemy approach you if you're going for the one-hit shotgun attack. Unless they're close of course, as by the time you get close enough to attempt it, you're probably dead from a dual attack.

Don't forget to attack while moving away (and maybe even jumping) from a Plasma Sword attacker as they generally need to have you locked on to dish out a fatal hit.

Mess around with a Rocket Launcher user as after 2 consecutive shots they have to reload which leaves them awfully vulnerable.

You don't always have to go for the head shot with a Sniper Rifle (unless you're low on ammo). Two body attacks will usually do it.

I like to throw a grenade behind someone, and then proceed to shoot then which will sometimes force them back onto the explosion, killing them.

Learn how to strafe/circle-strafe (if you haven't already). This will help you evade the Needlers and also when you strafe against someone using a Ghost, their shots are pretty much useless as aiming is tricky with that vehicle.

Lastly, for anyone wondering about the Battle Rifle, it's pretty weak in combat if you don't know how to use it, but it's a great weapon against vehicles. It'll take down a Banshee like nothing.

That's all that I can think of right now. A lot of times players will have Overshields on as well which makes it a pain to kill them. :)

Set look sensitivity up to 10 and get used to it. Flexibility and being able to follow someone as they circle strafe around you will change your whole game I guarantee it. It will take a lot of getting used to though. Aiming is key with any weapon+SMG due to the kick. One key to rumblepit even though its cheap is to catch others in firefights and take advantage of thier low health. Another tip if someone is using the Plasma sword, DO NOT keep them in your crosshairs if they are about to lock on you. Walk diagnolly toward them facing to the left or right of them and when they lock on (unless your too close) they will fly right by you. Most people say the sword is a noob weapon, but its awesome in the hands of a good player vs less experienced players, but against other good players its just above average. Learn to bounce grenades too. I get most of my kills in the pit with 'nades. If they get the drop on you and you know your gonna die also try to throw a grenade right before you die in such a way that it can possibly catch them when they come up to you. I've caught people teabagging me like this before and its hilarious. When you have two SMG's in close range aim a little below the sternum (center of rib cage) when you start firing and the kick will bring it up. 3 seconds they are dead if your pretty close. Circle strife and melee attacks that come closer to the head do more damage. One hit kills with a jump melee attack to the head with a rocketlauncher. And finally the Alien avatar is at a disadvantage to the spartan because of head placement. So go spartan for a tiny advantage.

LOL any more tips just PM me

glad to hear its not just me

Here's what you do.

Get a Plasma Pistol, get a battle rifle, or a carbine.

Fire plasma pistol overcharge. While it's in flight, switch guns and start firing. It should come out as the charge hits them, and then you just get the headshot, and kill.

If you have the sword, put it away, and use a gun. When they get close, and they will, pull it out and whack em. I also suggest jumping before lunging if you have the time-it does more damage and tends to help accuracy.

Dual wielding is decent, but once you get the hang of grenades, you won't want to do it as much. Plasma Pistol and magnum rocks, as does plasma rifle and magnum. SMG and plasma rifle hurts, and dual needlers is decent. A good grenader will tend to get you, but at least with dual wields you can block other plasma pistol overcharges if you time it right, by dropping your 2nd weapon at the right moment to take the shot for you.

I don't know, in a rumble pit match, if you can't get a rocket, sword, or shotgun, go with the PP/Battle rifle combo, and toss grenades into firefights to try and steal some kills. Rumble Pit is all about being a vulture.

Also, for sticky grenades, always aim a bit to the right of the target-since the chief throws them with his left, they don't go straight for his reticule. once I got the hang of that, I catch people with stickies all the time.

I've been stuck at Level 6 for the past month. I don't think I'm ever going to get much higher than that but that's fine with me. The way they have the matches set up on Live, you can only play against people who are + or - 5 Levels from you, so the match-ups are pretty even. I know some people are in the +20 Levels and there is no way I could hang with them.

SMG + pistol is my personal favorite combo. I can never seem to land the first shot with that Plasma Pistol to disable the other guys shield, so I stay away from that one. Shotguns too. It seems like it always takes me 3 or 4 hits with the shotgun until a guy drops but when they are shooting at me with it, I always die immediately.

Just stick with it, have fun, and don't get too frustrated. Try the Big Team Battles if you're looking for some relaxed play. I like them allot more because they playfield is more open and nobody is shooting at you every 5 seconds. And you always have 7 other people on your team fighting with you so it's okay if you screw up.

Well as for me I keep bouncing from level 11 and 12, and I found it is always better to use two different weapons while dual-wielding, unless it's two pistols (two pistols only works good if you have good aim, so you can get head shots). My personal favorite weapons are the battle rifle and shotgun, and from time to time I like to use the sniper.

I usually bounce between those levels as well. I'll get a great run in with some friends and jump up to 13/14 only to have it wiped out the next day by getting teamed up against cheaters or teamed up with people I just don't gel with (i.e. people that won't wait for backup and run into a well armed four-man team with a single SMG).

I usually play Team Skirmish and tend to switch between a lot of the different dual wields depending on the situation and level. A fully charged Plasma pistol should stand you well in most situations though.

The only thing I will say is that from my own experience if you're anywhere but in the US/Canada stay away from the Sword or the Shotgun. They're both too inconsistent in matchmaking for my liking due to the unavoidable latency. I've lost count of the number of times I though I'd shot someone point blank and end up dying the next second without them even turning around. This is with a full green bar on my connection meter as well.

I've been playing for a few days, and I'm already tired of the pre-adolescent boys who live on there 24/7. Listening as some twit who hasn't had his first nocturnal emission scream vulgarities about me and my mother gets old quick.

I don't mind getting my ass handed to me, but I'd prefer it was done by someone who has actually driven an automobile.

So let me get this straight. You start the match. An 1337 13-year-old kills you five seconds later, shouts "pwned!" in your ear, and then starts talking trash about your mom?

Oh, what I've been missing.

Get Steel Battalion: Line of Contact. In team modes you can't hear the other team, and in deathmatch modes the communications are cut off immediately upon your destruction. So you couldn't hear anybody saying "pwned", even if there were any 13-year-olds playing who were inclined to do so. And there aren't. The average age of players in the game is about 25. I know it's expensive, but you can get a start by trading in Halo 2 and any other prepubescent-dominated online games you might have lying around.

Of course, in Halo 2 you can go the full number of people in a multiplayer match before it starts to really get noticeable lag, as opposed to LOC.

That is true. Most matches in LOC will end up being 3 vs. 3, even though the game is theoretically specified for 5 vs. 5 matches. I can't say that this is a Good Thing. Nevertheless, I enjoy the 3 vs. 3 matches immensely. If your broadband connection is good, you may even be able to play in 4 vs. 4 matches.

But I still don't find anything particulary enticing about playing against fifteen thirteen-year-olds, and I'd hate to hear about what my mom's been up to lately. Plus, I'd probably just get pwned, and badly. Really. I have no skillz.

People still play LOC? I thought that game has been dead for months. I'll have to start brushing up on my VT skills and play a few games.

About Halo 2 though, yeah, there are some annoying pricks on there. The ones I hate the most are the ones that say "bitch" after they kill you. Wow, what a brilliant comment. x_x

Naw. Not dead yet. There were 446 ranked players (which means they played more than a certain number of matches) at the end of last round. Down from the 1500 or so of the early days, but you can still get a match if you want it. My friends list is made up of only LOC players, and most of them are regular players.

Most nights that I play I can get a match within five minutes. Although I will admit that sometimes it takes longer. That's when I flip the selector on my TV over to the PlayStation 2 or Saturn and do a little Unreal Tournament or Silent Bomber or Galactic Attack or something and tell the host to let me know (through my headset) when the room's full (and I should switch my TV back to the Xbox). I know, it's funny to play a videogame while you're waiting to play a videogame, but whattya gonna do?

Yeah, I'm currently in a Halo 2 Live rut myself. No matter what I do, doesnt seem like I can improve. So I'm taking a week or two off to re-collect myself and relax from the game- hopefully when I get back I'll get a fresh start and do better. Just a thought you might want to try out as well.

FYI I try to use the pistol/SMG combo myself when possible, and go for headshots.

Be wary with the SMG pistol combo if you want headshots...the SMG's bullets need a wide target to be useful. I've heard the best way is to just let the SMG fly up instead of holding it down, so that by the time their shield goes down, you're in position to land the headshot with the pistol.

Headshots with the shield up do no more damage then any other spot on the body. Headshots with it down though, kill with pretty much every ballistic weapon.

Thanks for sharing your insight gamefaq noob

While Halo 2 isnt the greatest game out there , Bungie is doing one hell of a job with everything. I think they need to put out new maps post haste though ;)

By the way , what is everybodies top level in online play ? I keep going from a 16 to a 15 in big team battle :/ I have started playing more team slayer and am up to a 13. I want to make it to a 20 (and I think I can)

Started a new clan and we have a 7 in minor clan after 3 days. My clan name is DrunkenPelicans :)

I like to duel wield the Magnum when I am on base defense on Coagulation. A few head shots and they are toast.

Plasma pistol , SMG combo is freaking great if you become good at it :-P
On close maps I like to use the Shot Gun and Melee at close range. Even if you didnt get them in one blast , the melee finishes them off. Sometimes it can be pretty nasty

So many new tricks and hiding spots learned everyday , thats why this game plays like its fresh to me.

I tend to hang around 11, because I don't play all that often in matchmaking lately. I spend most of my time in custom games with some of the half billion people in my list.

I get so bored with "bitch" after I die. It's like, use some creativity! I usually rant about it after I kill them back. Nevertheless, I usually play so late in the day that I deal with very few children and more college students, who aren't necessarily better, just less annoying-if I'm doing matchmaking anyway.

The best way to play matchmaking is for pretty much all team games, get a group of friends on live, and do that. Random people are always hard to make work as a team.

I've heard there is a way to cheat by pulling your router cable out or something.

Well, I was just on in Rumble Pit Training because I'm trying to get used to a look speed of 10 instead of the standard 3 and nobody was moving. I didn't have my headset in because I'm tired of hearing the tards curse. Anyway, so I'm up like 19 kills because it seems like only me and one other guy are playing.

I didn't really care because I was just trying to get used to the look up thing anyway, but then I plugged in my headset and guys were complaining about me cheating.

I wasn't cheating but they were talking about having me banned by Bungie. Do I have anything to worry about?

ubersaurus

Yeah, there is a way to cheat by setting your modem to standby for a short period of time, which will keep everyone else from doing anything, but you'd be fine. Don't know exactly what happened there, I'd maybe ask on Bungie's forums if you're really worried about it-they usually don't look into cheating unless they get alot of feedback on someone.

Let me reassure you, I haven't cheated, and I won't. But I don't want a malfunction of my router or something to get me banned as one. Why wiould I cheat in a rumble pit training room anyway? It doesn't affect your rank no matter what happens.

I play with my wife online sometimes, and she's been asked to "show her ta-tas" - though I'm not sure how one would do that exactly without video capabilities - it subsided pretty quickly after I indicated she was my wife and that they should back the F off. I was on XB Connect at the time. When we play on Live there is no indication of her being female because she just logs on as my guest, and doesn't use a headset.

The biggest problem with playing games like Halo2 online is that it doesn't take very long for there to be a core of gamers that are actually "too good" for the game. There's either no challenge any more but they keep on playing anyways, which leaves no room for a lesser player to play at a comfortable level....or everyone is so good that it's nothing but a stalemate that depends on luck of the draw rather than skill.

I'd rather stay offline and give others a chance to play. I've had my time. You'll find me over on FFXI :D

Oh , but there is where you are wrong. If you go into matchmaking as a noob you get matched against players within your ranked area and not against people who are highly ranked. I agree that there are players on Halo2 that are too damn good , but they probably dont see the light of day in real life ;)

And in capture the flag (CTF) or assualt(plant the bomb) matches it might be a tie or stalemate alot because there is an objective to acieve and not just senseless killing.

Anyhow , it was good playing with you last night Cue. Sorry about all of the people whoi dropped in :embarrassed: But when you leave the party open like that you can expect that to happen when you play with me (damn super long friends list)
