View Full Version : Will we get a super small GameCube at some point?

With GameCube discs being so small, I was thinking that Nintendo could come out with a new version of the GameCube at some point, that is really, really small, like a PSone, but even smaller, to use with a lcd screen and battery pack.

There no need to. You can put an LCD screen (portable one) on the Gamecube and it will still fit perfect in a carrying case or backpack. There would be absolutly no point besides how cool it would look. And considering the Gamecube isn't selling well, why would they rerelease the system that isn't doing well to begin with?

Sure the Cube is relatively small and compact, to a degree, but damn the thing is very tall.

The point that I'm trying to make is that with the super small media, there is the possibility, that if they could shrink all the other components dramtically, that it could be just as small as the PSone, or even smaller.

Sure, you can get a LCD screen for the current Cube, and a battery pack, but after you end up adding all this stuff to it, it becomes a towering monstrosity.

Looking at the PSP, and the type of media that it uses, concievable the Cube could be made super small too.

Half the space inside a Cube is already taken up by the cooling components anyway (heatsink and fans) so I doubt it could be made too much smaller. Only feasible way to do that that I can think of is to move the drive and controller ports to one side, and make the other side completely dedicated to cooling the thing.

But again, it's probably not going to happen anyway...I mean, has anyone ever seen a Gamecube Famiclone? That shows you right there how popular it is.

Well if the N64 didnt get a redesign...I doubt the Cube will...but I hope GameCube is released in more colors during it's final years. I like to see more variety then what we have for just the basic 3

a while back someone had a thread about their ideas for Nintendo's future. It involved the GBA 2 playing Game Cube disks. It was an interesting idea but likely to not happen. I wouldn't say that some sort of re-design is out of the question.

I think theres a couple of reasons why the N64 didn't get a redesign to make it smaller and more portable.

1. With the large cartridges that it used, it's just not a very good idea. Hard to make it smaller using that kind of media.

2. The concept of redesigning systems to make them much smaller and more portable, hadn't been invented yet.

You're wrong on both counts actually.

It could've easily been made smaller, and there already had been numerous systems that had seen redesigned over the course of their production runs to be made much smaller.

some new colors would be awesome....like clear for example or one to look like the original NES

....or, since the PSP is disc based, come out with a handheld system that plays the GCN media (they look just as small as the PSP's UMDs) to compete with the PSP, since it looks like the DS is gonna have some trouble competing...

That's nonsense.

SNES 2
I don't know how much smaller the 2nd channel f version was, but that's another redesign.

As for cart size, the NES had pretty big carts. N64 carts weren't much bigger then Genesis ones, or atari 2600 carts.

What I meant was, the concept of making a system much smaller to support the use of a LCD screen and battery pack.

That hadn't been invented yet.

Until Sony came out with the PSone and the PSone screen and interact came out with the battery pack.

Then the Cube got a screen and battery pack.

Soon the PStwo will have a screen and battery pack.

That's what I'm talking about.

Maybe a handheld version could be on the cards in the next few years? All they really need to do is sort out some kind of disc skipping solution and they would be halfway there.

After all, a Cube disc is really not that much bigger than a PSP disc, so a console around the size of the PSP could be feesable...

Hell, even if it was the size of the Lynx it can't be all that bad!!!

Gamecube wont get minatuized because it hasnt sold well, plain and simple. Only the really popular consoles ever get small redesigns, eg NES, SNES, PSX and PS2. N64 didnt get one so theres no way GC will ever get one, plus GC is small enough.

what we really need is a mini Xbox. that thing is like a monolith or something, casting all my other systems into shadow. LOL

I see it as a possibility, Nintendo released the "Funtastic" colors for the Nintendo 64 on its last year on the market, why not the same for the GameCube, but instead of colors, rather a smaller version? In one way I could see it as a huge benefit, but I also think Nintendo doesn't want to just follow Sony, that would look goofy.

Umm Isn't the Nomad a Protable Genesis with a screen? Hmmm... anorhter hole in that theory. BTW could you plug a 32X into a Nomad?

You could plug it in, yes, but there's not much chance it'd actually work. If it did you'd probably just get the Genesis signal without the 32X overlay. And even then, it'd hardly be portable anyway. ;)

the GC is the smallest of the systems already, is there really a need to make it smaller? then again your talking to someone who was never bothered by the size of the xbox or 3DO
