Well, not EVERY night. But on occasion.

Normal Bed...

BED OF DOOM

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v680/fishsandwich/3.jpg
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v680/fishsandwich/2.jpg

I live in a tiny studio loft, so space is a premium. It's only about 600 square feet... to put that into perspective, a smallish one-bedroom apartment is generally around 800 square feet (in the States, at least. Subtract space for NY and SanFran)

It's about the size of a decent living room and dining room in an average-sized house. I sleep, cook, eat, watch TV, play games, get dressed, and play on the computer... all in one room (I live with two cats. Ain't no way anyone else is moving in here with me or I'd hurt them.) I do have a separate bathroom, so I can at least sit on the john in private.

As you can imagine, space for boxed games is hard to find. I can't have a "Room of Doom" and not look like a total nerd/obsessive-complusive and still have room for CLOTHES TO WEAR, so I built this bed out of 2 X 4's, plywood, and some treated lumber. It's on wheels and can move around the room (helpful when painting!) It opens on hinges and is propped up with a stick. I keep my entire Sega collection in the bed and I must say... IT'S AWESOME. It's a bit of drama to get games out, but I just keep a separate box of my favs out to play and put away the rest. So tidy!

I have everything Sega except for my Dreamcast stuff under/in the bed... Saturn, Saturn imports, 32x, Sega CD, Genesis, Master System, and even a Sega 1000 cart in here. I have room for a few more things... like the 40 or so Saturn games I need to complete the collection.

I highly recommend one of these things if you are handy with a saw. Takes a weekend. No need for a box springs if your mattress is good... the whole thing is very solid and will support a decent mattress just fine.

DRESSER OF DOOM

WARDROBE OF DOOM

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v680/fishsandwich/13.jpg

New pictures...

I found the dresser at a scratch & ding outlet for $250... my entire N64 collection resides comfortably in the bottom 4 drawers. Matches the bed & floor perfectly. Most of my fold-up clothes are in the top drawers.

Most of the rest of my collection resides in the wardrobe... I got it at a Home Depo for $100, painted the front to match the walls, and stuffed it. My clothes and computer reside in an identical wardrobe next to it. It's got all my loose NES games on the bottom two shelves, various trade bait and Ebay stuff on the second to bottom shelves, TG-16 and NGPC and my boxed NES and SNES stuff on the third to bottom shelves, and about half of my PSX games on the top along with various crap like Gameboy, Tiger.com, various extra systems, and some odds & ends.

There's my Room of Doom in a nutshell... and it's about the size of a nutshell. Those of you with normal apartments and houses should count yourselves amoung the blessed.

I'm going to add my little closet of a loft to the collection page on this website... It looks tiny compared to most of you with real places of residences that have nice closets and FULL BASEMENTS (asses, all of you), but I can't afford city living AND a lot of space at the same time, so a studio it is.

That is pretty rocking.

I don't know if I'd feel very comfortable sleeping right above my games, but if you do, heh, go for it.

And, damn, that Sega collection is awesome. It makes, my heart, so very very happy. :)

Gimme gimme gimme that Darxide!! You are officially not allowed to have PAL games like that when you live in the US. I'm sure there is a law about it somewhere.

If not, I will get one passed. Just post it to me now and save yourself a loooong prison stretch ...

No, no no, you've got it all wrong - it's Nintendo games that should be hidden away like that out of sight. A Sega collection should be fully displayed in a prominent position for onlookers to worship at the feet of ;)

Just kiddin', that's really neat (in both senses of the word!)

LOL

That would be funny, in more ways than you know ;) It's six stories up, so she'd splat pretty hard... the pool isn't close enough to the building to make it unless you push off real hard.

Thanks for all the nice comments, folks. The bed was actually a ridiculous POS before this weekend... it was an open platform, not painted, 12 inches higher than it is now and covered with an ugly blue blanket. I had to step on the platform to get on the bed. It was a testament to ugliness. I can't tell you how nice it was to lop off a foot of height, enclose it, and paint it all black. No more eyesore.

testament89- I do indeed still have it for you. Sorry for the delay... I had a cold twice, then the flu, school's in session, I finished this damn bed, and I'm lazy. I've got your PM!

GrayFox- It's cool sleeping on your games... you know they are warm & cozy. No sunlight, no mashing, no crushing... they sleep very well and are much happier than when they were stacked up on top of each other in a big plastic storage box... particularly the 32x and cardboard Genesis games. I sometimes hear them cooing contentedly.

Vroomfunkel- You will have to fight off my concierge, my alarm system, my flea-bitten cats, and myself to get it... It was the best trade I ever got, by far.

WanganRunner- I used to have all this stuff in my brother's basement... 3 states away! I finally got to take them all home when I got two wardrobes, the dresser, and the bed. I even have a little space left over in the wardrobe!Well, the 3DO collection is still at his house... I'm thinking about leaving the boxes in his basement and putting all the CD's in a case so I have re-discover the 3DO.

anagrama- I admit it... I'm a Sega fanboy. I wish I could display them, but I just don't have the room. The Nintendo stuff in in the dresser and the wardrobe. I must find that picture of the dresser and all the N64 games...

jajaja- I can't believe we haven't heard the "p" word yet in relation to the cat. I doubt he'd sit on the bed if I was getting it on with him! Ewwwww.....

They do like to lay next to my legs when I sleep, though.

Cheers

Is the bed comforable? Do you have a box spring? Or is it just a mattress on the plywood? BTW I'm In love with that Sega Collection, How many games is that?

The bed is supremely comfortable, but it's all due to the mattress. The mattress w/o the box springs was almost $800... they charge 70% of the set if you just get the top. It's a good mattress and does not need a box spring, nor does it need to be flipped ever once in a while. Best sleep I've ever had, in fact, but a shitty mattress wouldn't work with this bed. A shitty mattress plus box springs would work fine, but the bed would be a bit tall. You could take off the wheels and get it back to normal size, though.

You can jump up and down on the platform/box itself all you want... it's VERY sturdy. It's made with treated lumber, 2 X 4's, and thick plywood. You can see that underneath the top of the bed has a lot of support joicing and extra beams. This sucker is heavy, but the heavy-duty wheels make it able to pushed around. Of course, it was much easier to push when it was empty.

I'm not sure how many games in the collection... about 200 Saturn, 200 or so import Saturn, 15 or so Sega CD, 39 32x, 40 or so Genesis, 120 or so SMS... about 600 or so? Barbie is indeed part of the group :embarrassed: She is SEALED though, so I think that a a little of my manliness is still intact :)

X-Men was never released... I bought the proto off Ebay a few years back and made a case for it using some original artwork I found on the net (for the front) and made up the back myself. I need to make up an instruction book.

Again, thanks for the compliments, folks! This is the first project I've made that turned out well... everything else I make looks awful and is way bigger than I originally imagined.

Cheers

fishsandwich
02-15-2005, 10:02 AM
That is some nice work. Does it come apart easily for when you move to a different place?

Oh, HELL no. This sucker is here to STAY. When I eventually sell my place I'll offer the bed for free and if the buyer doesn't want it I'll probably beat it to death with a sledgehammer. It might make it through the door, but no way is it making it on the elevator or down the stairs. Maybe I can sell it to someone on my floor.

Mr Mort- I am about 40 short for the domestic Saturn... sports stuff mostly, but more than I thought. I've got the entire 32x collection, including the 2 UK exclusives and the 1 Japanese exclusive. Those last three were a BITCH to find and I just got plain lucky on all counts.

Naouruki- Indeed, it was pure luck. And intense searching. The last one I got was indeed Romance of the Three Kingdoms 4... I paid through the nose for a supplier in Japan to hunt it down for me.

X-Men 32x has been dumped already, along with Virtua Hamster. I had them on my computer before little viruses started to eat my PC and I had to wipe it clean and re-install the OS. I did a little Goggling just now, but there SO much stuff out there under ROMS! Look around a bit... they are both out there.

X-Men is indeed playable... it's a 3-D scrolling action/fighter. It's in true 3-D, but the camera is fixed for a frontal view. The graphics are pretty impressive with a lot of texture mapping and the enviornments "fade" in when you go further back into the levels (as opposed to just left & right.)

Ever play Hulk: The Parthenon Saga for PSX or Saturn? It's A LOT like that. I read somewhere that the code for the Hulk actualy started out as the X-Men code that was eventually used for the Hulk game.

The first level of X-Men involves a lot of running around and fighting Ninjas, opening doors, flipping switches, and avoiding hazards like fireballs a poison gas clouds and stuff like that. Very standard and old-school (especially by today's standards) but it's still cool to see and there's no way the Genesis or SNES could have even attempted to do it. The second level is missing some stuff, while the third level is incomplete and disintergrates into a screen of code when you pass a certain point in the game.

Thanks again folks for all the nice, nice comments... you really made my day!!!!!!!!!!!

Cheers
