"Come on God, answer me. For years I've been asking, 'Why are the innocent dead and the guilty alive, where is justice, where is punishment?' Or have you already answered? Have you already said to the world 'here is justice, here is punishment. Here... in me." (The Punisher, the movie.)

Welcome to this week's Monday Morning MAME Club Posting. Every Monday, a member of the MAME club will pick a new game for you to play in MAME! All you have to do to participate is install MAME, download the ROM of the week from this message, and then post your thoughts about the game! You can post a full review of the game or simply tell us what you liked/didn't like about the game. Have you played this game before? Have you played it in an actual arcade? Do you like the genre? How did it run on your computer? Did you beat it? If so, how long did it take? What was your high score? How far can you get? Did you have any problems emulating the game? When writing your review, post it right here in the sticky topic and include any thoughts you have about the game. Remember, YOU are the reviewer. Let us know anything and everything you think about the game! Just remember, if you want people to respond during YOUR week, you should play along on OTHER weeks!

The ROM of the week is: The Punisher (available HERE (http://www.robohara.com/mameclub)!)
KLOV Link for the game: HERE (http://www.klov.com/game_detail.php?letter=&game_id=9156)

I'll say this to start things off: If you've only played the Genesis port, you haven't played this game.

I suppose that the Neo-Geo bios is required for this, right? just a heads up this time around... :D

I don't think it was ever a Neo-Geo title, was it?

I believe it was CPS2 and used the same engine as Final Fight.

Odd that the Punisher wasn't actually in either of the Marvel vs Capcom games, isn't it? (Or was he?)

ah yes another one of those beat'em ups from long ago...needless to say it ate a lot of my quarters back then. it always made me laugh that the "special" attack" for both nick fury and frank castle was a continuous leg sweep...and of course the only way you could throw grenades was via a double jump.

My favorite arcade game, played this a lot in the bowling alley near my house in Philly.

A rather poor clone, IMHO. I'd seen this style of gameplay done SO many other times a lot better. I hear it's better then some of the other Punisher games, though.

Give me ANY beat-em-up, and I'll play it. Give me the chance to fight the Kingpin (one of my favorite Marvel villains, BTW), and it's a done deal. :D

This definitely doesn't reinvent the wheel or add anything new to the genre, but it does everything well. Stylish graphics, fun gameplay, satisfying beat-em-up action. I LOVED the level on the bus (or tram cart, or whatever it was supposed to be).

Like I've said a few times before, I love this club because it opens you up to great games that you probably never would've heard of otherwise (like Vendetta from a few weeks ago). This is definitely a worthy download, especially if you're a rabid beat-em-up fan like I am.

My thoughts:

Great graphics, like right out of a comic book. Has some cool moments like the cut sceens, some of the weapons, the poppy field level, etc. Unfortunately, overall it is a bit on the boring side. They could have added a few different elements so the gameplay would not be so linear.

Other things I noticed:

-good shot of the twin towers at the end of the game.
-they spelled "Evil" wrong at the end of the game. They spelled it "Evel".

I really liked the game and I have few things to say about it since it is just like many linear games from those days. The graphics are nice and the animation is good. Like the post before this one, I agree with most of it, so I won't bore any more by typing crap... :/

I just got around to playing this one last night. For a beat-em-up, it's not bad ... not a ton of different attacks, and it seems like the usual three-punch method will get you pretty far in the game. The graphics seem above par for the genre but probably not for the year. I enjoyed the weapons I was able to pick up -- the baseball bats were fun, the battle axes were more fun.

Not very special, but i like it like another beat´em up. Very fast, good music, but...a bit difficult (also you starts only with one one life). I think i´ll put another coin in Level 3...after that, the game is a mess, with difficult bosses (like the level 4 boss) or KINGPIN!!!, very bad, very strong...very...BIG!!! (i think it´s one of the biggest bosses of the beat´em up games, right???

Huge fan of this one. But you've GOTTA go with Nick Fury, the Punisher is way overrated. :) Yeah, it's pretty much Final Fight meets Crime Fighters, but the graphics and animation are well done, and, well... you've got Marvel comic characters. It's not rocket science, but it's not trying to be. Good game.

One thing that others haven't touched on that I love about this game is the jumping holds. I just LOVE the ability to jump while holding an enemy and all the moves it opens up. I've played lots of other beatemups without this feature and after playing The Punisher the others just aren't the same. Sorry for dredging this topic up but I just had to say that.

P.S you CAN throw gernades from the ground and there are actually special moves in this game but you have to enter certain button presses and such to do them

The rom download link doesn't work and where can I obtain previous roms of the week?

Thanx.

I have a limited amount of online storage space, so I only leave the current week's ROM pick online. I can tell you that I've gotten almost every week's pick from romnation.net, so you should be able to get most of the past weeks' picks there.
