View Full Version : VGR: The other collector-gamelist site

Seeing as Digital Press is in the process of rolling out their functionality for game lists based off their rarity guides, I guess it is appropriate to mention my site which has been allowing users to create game lists for 2 years now.
We feature:
Regional Variations
Regular Variations
Cross Country Versions
Reviews
Ability to add games to Owned & Wanted Lists
Ability to users to contribute information to expand our knowledge
and lots more
I've avoided posting anything on the site before since I didn't want to step on anybodies toes, but at this point it seems kinda moot.
I'd love it if any of you guys would choose to try out the site and maybe contribute info to it. I think we have our own little niche that DP doesn't necessarily cater to specifically, so by all means enjoy the fruits of a lot of labor and thanks for reading

i checked the site out the other day, but was disappointed when i didnt find anything about the odyssey 2

It's all a matter of time...if you are interested in an Odyssey 2 section, and feel like you can help flesh it out, I'll add it in immediately.
Alas, the really classic systems have taken a backseat to filling in the 16 & 32 bit sections.

I only scanned over the homepage, but it looked very good. It has a very professional look, and you do seem to have a large database (15,000 games). I'll be sure to check it out when I have some spare time. Best of luck!

Cool looking site! Looks much better than IGN's and more informative too. Your timing was a tad unfortunate for most of us here though, as DP's upcoming collector's lists are a dream come true. I really like the way yours looked though with box art, release date and msrp. I don't have a huge collection so I'm still open as to where to post one (my IGN page is horribly out of date, to the point I'd rather not try to catch up).

Rev, I tooted VGRebirth's horn here a few times recently, but most just said they'll wait for DP's. Shame.
I'll say this, VGRebirth has an amazing Saturn listing, every game you could think of it is almost guaranteed to be there. Ever heard of Steeldom? How about Keriotosse! ? VGRebirth has these and more.

I was impressed. If you're a Virtual Boy or Neo Geo Pocket (this was all I looked at Im sure the rest is great too) collector they have some great listings complete with front and back box art and screen shots. It looks like allot of work went into this site. The only thing is DP is really good about keeping up on their stuff. Your N-Gage section wasn't very up to date.
RevQuixo
02-15-2005, 12:00 AM
Ah yes...the Ngage section.
I guess I should explain that VGR is largely the work of 4 people. Of those 4 2 of us add games to the database actively. That being the case...some systems fall by the wayside while we work on updating others.
Ngage is one such system.
The way to keep the Ngage section all perky and complete? Contribute games to it. You give us the data via the contribution system...we verify and slap it up...and you get immortal credit in the profile pages.

Sad to say, but I still have about 100 games to add to the Saturn section too... I have gotten side tracked with a lot of other systems and i just don't have the zeal to wrap up Saturn...maybe I'm keeping it incomplete because it was the first section I started 2+ years ago... Nostalgia :D

Depends on what you are looking to do
You can go into Game Database and do a basic search on "Dreamcast"
Like so:
http://vgrebirth.org/games/search.asp?keywords=&platforms=3®ions=&x=26&y=11
This breaks it out from the "a to z" method that is used if you went into the platform itself.
You still will have to flip from page to page, but that is because otherwise we would kill the site..if you were to have it all appear on one huge page it would bog down resources emmensely.

Nice site. Some of the prices are way out though .. I'd like to see the person who can pick up Maximum Carnage or Virtual Bart for the Japanese Megadrive for under 10,000 yen!!! (unless the price entries are for the original retail price?)
Several PAL Mega CD titles missing also ..
However, minor quibbles aside .. very nice looking set-up there.

Pretty sure it's the original RRP that's quoted.
RevQuixo
02-15-2005, 10:04 AM
Yes that is the original MSRP (Manufacturers Suggested Retail Price). It is going to be the anchor of a valuation system that we are thinking of implementing that will take how much a user paid, compare it to the Original Price and determine a rise or fall in value.
Still trying to peg down how that'll work cross-currency, but I've got some ideas percolating.

Missing PAL Releases...
FATAL FURY SPECIAL
KRISS KROSS (MAKE MY VIDEO)
MIDNIGHT RAIDERS
SAMURAI SHODOWN
SLAM CITY
Good Deal Games Releases (PAL?)
BUG BLASTERS
STAR STRIKE
Well looks like the above are missing from the VGR Mega CD section. Can anyone verify that GDG did in fact release PAL version games and maybe if anyone owns them the barcodes of the other "missing" games. I have been loathe to add some of the above games because I have yet to see visual confirmation that they exist.

Straight from the horse's mouth:
http://www.gooddealgames.com/Publishing_SegaCD_Bug_Blasters.html
http://www.gooddealgames.com/Publishing_SegaCD_Star%20Strike.html
They're listed as being available in PAL format there, but they only pressed about 5 PAL copies of each. They're identical to the US copies except with a 'PAL' sticker on the front.
I heard about a possible re-press not long ago, but I'm not sure if anything has happened about that yet.
Chris Burgin's top MegaCD site (clicky) (http://www.sega-mega-cd-library.co.uk/) should be able to confirm almost everything else. Rest assured, we're not making this stuff up here ;)

Yeah I've visited GDG's site before, but saying and doing are two seperate animals.
That Mega CD site however is mighty handy...should allow me to fill in those gaps.
Now you *know* I wasn't poo-poo'ing the veracity of the DP list, just needed to get the confirmation. I'd be negligent in my site work to just toss stuff up on face value.
Edit:
VGR should now be "complete" for PAL Mega CD games based on all the info available. I guess I should consider adding the demos now too...

I like this site. It's got a pretty huge database on games, too.
If you're taking suggestions, I think it would be pretty cool if there was an addition where you could read/add facts about some of the games... like if a game was the first of to have a certain feature or some other infoo surrounding the game... If there was something like that I'd read the site all day! :eek 2:

Yeah, I agree that content is something that VGR is lacking. The real problem is gathering up "factoids" to be used on the site. I will toss the idea off my coders and see what we can do.

Having been a rather active SegaXtreme member for awhile some time back.. I'm well aware of your site. Since I became a DP member.. I frequent SX much less nowdays.
Nothing personal.. and it's not your site I have any qualms with (It's a good one).. it's the "attitude" that a lot of your members "copped" in the SegaXtreme forums. I viewed them as very arrogant and they were always jacking threads; and interjecting their unwarranted opinions when nobody seemed to ask. If anyone questioned their loyalty or motives.. most of them would get downright nasty and defensive and call out all their "brethren" to the SX forum folds.
One prediction though.. now that the cat's out of the bag about your site here in the DP forums.. I predict someone will do the same; and to the rest of my fellow DP'ers.. get ready to see ALOT of these HUGE VGR "sig-logos" littering our threads. they just get kind of annoying after awhile.
Just my humble opinion.. but I saw enough of your members and their "in-thread" advertisements in the past.. not to want to become one of them.

My sig is no more huge than any other on this site. In fact, I was apprehensive at first about adding it until I saw others had banner sigs as well.
Now in terms of my "brethern" who were previous at SegaXtreme, I challenge you to look at the staff of VGR and name one person there that is a troublemaker. When I was running SegaXtreme (when Iceman2k took his various breaks from the site) I tried to steer the site away from its piracy roots and the original intent was to change SX into what VGR is today...a museum site. Unfortunately there was a culture clash which caused myself, Mowgli (who designed SX) and gameboy900 to quit SX and start VGR. Most of the "troublemaking" elements while they might have joined us in our exodus from a piracy site, but they aren't working for VGR. The current staff of VGR has posted at SX maybe a dozen times in the time since we left.
Now in terms of whoring out my site...I think it would be foolish to even begin comparing DP to VGR in terms of gamelists. While VGR is better in dealing with variants and cross country comparisons, we don't have the rarity guide (nor will we probably ever) nor do we have the expansiveness (working on that).
Now any DP members that want to advertise their gamelists in their sig from VGR...more power to em. I likewise wouldn't mind if DP members did the same at my site. If the DP staff ask me to remove my sig image, I will more than willingly do so.
The only reason I posted here at all (and I have lurked for over a year) is that DP was rolling out their lists and I wanted to present the alternative that my crew has been working hard on for *years* before the steamroller of the DP lists hits full force. If I can convince a half dozen members here to help out my project instead of just "sticking with DP" than it will bring my site that much closer to being another definitive source of info. My site needs members submitting data to thrive...DP has an active collector community...it seems like a match that does not detract from DP and only can enchance VGR.

Sorry to bump an old thread, but I don't like creating too many "whoring out my site posts", so this was easier.
VGRebirth is rapidly expanding into the Golden Age of console era and is looking for someone to join the staff who can help with adding in games for systems such as:
Atari 2600
Atari 5200
Atari 7800
ColecoVision
Intellivison
..and basically everything in between.
Ideally we are looking for someone who specializes in cart / label / packaging variations as we catalog our titles down to that level.
I'm also looking for someone to upkeep the current gen systems by adding in new releases as they come out.
Minor HTML experience (basic tags only) is required and i don't think there would be any conflict of interest with working at both DP & VGR..DP does rarity...VGR does game detail.
Please PM me offers to join VGR, I'd like to find someone with a strong attention to detail and a love of endless data entry. Applicants will be asked to submit a few entries to VGR through our user submission system as a test for quality of data.
Thanks

I knew i saw your name and avatar somewhere before!!
I knew about VGR before i found this place and i had a hard time likeing it. I dont exactly remember what i was looking for in the past but i would have a hard time finding anything i wanted.
Back when i was an active poster on SX i remeber the early days of VGR and hoped that it would have become what DP already was (before i found this place). Looking at the site agin after a few years i still don't like it. It looks alittle diferent now (i think) but still not friendly (sorry its the only way i can describe it at the moment).
It still looks like a nice site and i like the box scans. I think you need more screen shots (as does DP) but it dosen't yet compare to DP - but i can see it becoming a bigger competitor
i didnt see the list thing you were talking about -- mabey is one of those things that i refer to unfreindly - or i'm just blind but i dont see it -- do i need to be a memeber to see it?
also - if i am understanding what the list thing is suposed to be i was under the impression that DP always had that
i havent started mine YET but im working on it (so much stuff to organize) -- am i right (other DP members)? the personal collection list has been an option here for some time now
i don't mind the sig - i think others have more anoying ones

Well we have almost 19,000 game entries...what were you trying to find that you couldn't? We have search capabilities all through the site and you can search by barcode, item number, title.
If you were looking for old console stuff.. (Pre-NES) then yes, we are lacking in that area...hence my looking for a staffer. But beyond that we have made huge strides in getting the 8, 16 & 32 bit areas closer to completion.
Not sure what you find unfriendly about our system, but if you have any specific navigation concerns I'd be glad to here them...we are always looking to improve site flow.
In terms of the game lists...Yes you have to sign up to use them...once you do check boxes show up in the listings and you can add games to your own / want list.
Once ayou add your games you end up with a list that looks like this:
http://vgrebirth.org/community/games.asp?list=1&id=RevQuixo
In regards to the gamelists...we had them for about two years before DP added the functionality to their online rarity guide.

you know - the colections list was a rather new discovery to me - i think i noticed it about a year ago and thought it was just one of those things i missed
it wasnt the game list i couldn't find (the colection list thing)
if i remeber corectly what turned me off in the past was that i couldn't search using game specifics or qualities and get a list of games that matched that criteria.
like i just tried to search something simple like sega rpgs and nothing game up
im not surewhat it was i was trying to find but i remeber trying to use the site and geting frustrated (back in the SX days)
what i realy like about the data base here on DP is that it includes a slew of search filters that help you narrow down a short list of games from the 1000s available.
it also seems kind of cluterd or busy
the barcode feature is real cool

What you are looking for is our "advanced search" capability. Go into the Game Database section and you should see a link under the header for advanced search...it also all the filters you could possibily want..including including/excluding your own games from the search.
So If I wanted to See all Sega published RPGS from 1996 rated Teen but not already owned by me...I could.
*Note* It looks like tring to do an advanced search with all platforms selected seems to be kludge the system..I'll look into fixing that post haste.

VGR, is this Craig Pell?
Back in 97 when I began to really get deicated to collecting, and started using the internet to research the topic, VGR was THE site I went to for lists. The site was down for a very long time, but it sure is good to see it back.
I still use VGRs lists as checklists to this day. I use the DP guide for reference or when a game is missing form the VGR lists (which happens quite rarely), or when DP has a list VGR didn't.
The mini pdfs DP made before the Online Rarity Guide were the BEST! Those still around?

Sadly we are not related to the other VGR. I guess there are only so many abbreviations for Video Game "Something" and there was an overlap. Consider it a homage to the old VGR even though my staff and I hadn't heard on the lists when we started the site.
The new VGR (My VGR) has been around for a around two and a half years now and while we certainly have lists out the wazoo, we don't have the classic stuff covered quite as much as we would like.
Working on that though.
