What are some really good RPGs for the NES, and why.
Im neering the end of Crystalis, and that game is pretty sweet. There are a couple of really cool looking bosses, good attack animations, and a depthy story.
I liked the Adventures of Link, but my copy is shit. Even after i replaced the battery twice it still erases my save randomly.

Cmon guys! :)

Judging from the games mentioned in your post, I'll assume you're more into action-RPG's. So I'll recommend Willow. The fact that it's by Capcom should tip you off to the fact that it's an awesome game. It's not as good as Crystalis, but a very fun experience non-the-less.

Have you played the original Zelda? If not then that is a no brainer as far as adventure games go. If you are interested in actual RPGs, then Final Fantasy is also of course a great game. The Dragon Warrior series is awsome, the Ultima series is great, Destiny of an Emperor is a cool game. The NES actually has quite a few good RPGs.

Give Battle of Olympus a try, it's basically Adventures of Link with a Greek flavor.

Star Tropics is a good overhead action/RPG series. Rygar's more action oriented than RPGish but it's so good I'll mention it anyway.

Willow is a great suggestion and probably the next best thing to Crystalis as far as the NES has to offer.

Are there any cool gimmicks in Legend of the Ghost Lion? Ive wanted to try it for awhile. I dont care if the graphics were dated at its release.

The difference with Ghost Lion is that you level up by finding seeds ( or some item I forget) instead of by battles. You do NOT gain any experience in battles so you are at the game designer's mercy. You will only ever be as levelled up as they want you to be before a battle. This makes the game more difficult because you can't spend time levelling up if you hit a brick wall in terms of difficulty. You just have to somehow fight through it.

The other difference is that you can summon animals to help you. This is the only NES RPG that has summoning commands (I believe).

Don't remember animals. I do remember some kind of fighter. Maybe some kind of slime creature/animal too?

Yeah, from what I played of Ghost Lion it seemed like a unique and interesting RPG. And regardless of what anyone says, Deadly Towers is an awesome action RPG. It's insanely tough though.

I played Faxanadu once, and really didn't like it much. Maybe I just didn't get it? I dunno.

It has been a long time since I played Destiny of an Emperor, but I think what appealed to me the most was how you could enlist your enemies after you defeated them. You could build up a huge stable and it would just be fun to scour the countryside for generals you hadn't beaten yet and try to get them to your side.

Some day I'll get around to playing the sequel.

I haven't played it in years, but I really got into Swords and Serpents. I love the deep, dark dungeon games of old. I also liked The Bards Tale. To me the best RPG's are the Dungeon's and Dragons style of action RPG's.

Magic of Scheherezade is a great game, with an interesting blend of action battles, and traditional RPG style battles.

It's been awhile since I played it but I thought Magic of Schererazade had some summoning in it. I could be mistaken though.

I beat Ghost Lion not all that long ago, I have no clue when it was originally released but I thought the graphics were pretty good actually. The girl had a really nice portrait and some of the monsters were cool looking. The game wasn't all that difficult for me, I remember when I had trouble I'd make a mad dash to a new town where I could buy a stronger sword earlier that I was suppose to and then go back to where I was and kick ass. Cheap strategy but it worked.

Most;y Ghost Lion was kind of a thinking RPG. If you're getting your ass kicked try summoning a different ally and utalize some of their defense skills or status effects. The game was pretty clever that way, there's a sollution to every foe's attack.

I loved the label though, it's like some random picture of an 80's looking chick in an aerobic's outfit complete with neon headband and ankle warmers.

I reccomend Sweet Home, great rpg that wasnt released in America. But you can get the ROM or get a reproduction done, which is exactly what I did. Well worth the 35 I spent on it.
