I have several goals sketched out, which do you think would be the best to start with? I know collecting is a personal decision thing, but I was just interested in what you guys would do.

Get the games that you want to play. My recommendations.
Mario 1-3
Contra series
Castlevania series
Mega Man series
Kid Icarus
RC Pro Am
Micro Machines
Ninja Gaiden series
Bubble Bobble
River City Ransom
there's plenty more, but these games are a good start.

Don't underestimate the 5200. That and MAME are all I've been playing in the last few months.
(Yes, I know that was a joke option, but yes, I'm being serious...kind of.)

I'd do the "grab what you can when you can" method. you should be able to build a fairly large library quickly and pretty cheaply.
If your ultimate goal is to get the whole library you won't pass up stuff you'll want later by starting with too narrow a focus.
If it's not you've got some trade bait to use when filling out the stuff you do want to focus on.

I agree with grab what you can. Especially if you have a buy-sell-trade shop nearby that sells them cheap. I got most of my games when I wasn't really looking for them. Just sort of hit some local BST's and thrift stores and grabed everything that I didn't already have. It's worked pretty well for me. I've been collecting NES carts for a few years now and I think I'm at around 425.
Well that was an easy poll! ( I voted for the 5200)

Grab anything you can cheaply and trade for what you want later. It is starting to get harder and harder to get even NES games for cheap any more.

I'm also with grab-anything as well because you never know what you may come across. I usually frequent Funcoland for loose NES games and I've found many NES games I'd never thought of actually finding in the wild like the Tengen Tetris and (Bira-bira was smiling that day) a CIB Namco Pac Man. (It's the same as Tengen version but has only Namco copyright no mention of Tengen)
I also picked up 3 Stackups in one store cuz they were cheap! No box or parts though :P

Hmm, i think I'll go for the "grab what I can" myself..along with focusing on games I want to play as well before I figure excatly how to jump into NES collecting.
