That's pretty sweet. One less device to carry around. The DS is looking more and more like a purchase. This may also open the door to Palm games. Although Nintendo will probably limit that ability.

I guess that's pretty cool, doesn't mean one damn thing to me though.

The palm thing is sorta dangerous though, isn't it?
Wouldn't that open the door to emulators that can just emulate GBA software which is then playable on Nintendo hardware? That's the sort of thing that Nintendo execs have nightmares about....

Yeah. Dangerous that Nintendo built a device that would've totally trumped every existing PDA in existance but then put off the operating system for it until now. If they truly wanted to grab the market by the throat, they should've done this before they launched the console. I was interested in one until I learned it didn't have PDA features built in. Now, I have a Pocket PC and am happy playing emulated NES games on it.
The DS did this too late to attract me. With that built in, it would've been a killer, killer app. I'll still be interested to see it when / if it is released -- I really LOVE the idea of two screens with a PDA, as that makes a lot of sense -- but I don't think it will convince me to buy anymore.

Well assuming this is true, all the article says is that it's Palm OS based. They'll probably just end up making a card for notes and contacts (all the basic stuff Palm stuff). That way all you get is the software they give you, there is no OS.

maybe it could be some kind of firmware upgrade so the people who already own the system could get this feature too?

I kind of doubt this story.. they are the only source and everyone else is quoting them. Not to mention that this one particular news item of thiers just happens to have a "Register at GamerCentric to become part of our awesome gamer community!" link, when others do not...
V:
Virtual
Visual
Vibration (we've seen screens where the DS thinks there is a virbration device)
I think it;s for Video... as in that unit they are making to play mpeg4 vids on the handhelds...
Who really knows... at this point it's V(apor)-pocket...

Actually, I don't see them as grabbing at all...I think it's a great, innovative idea that will seem very natural for the unit. The ARM processors in the DS units are well suited for this, as many Palm use these. There is incredible potential for this and will blow the DS library wide open, with all the Palm games and apps out there...I've been meaning to get a new Palm to replace my IIIc anyway. If this can be done on one little DS cart at an affordable price, for those that already have a DS, it would be one hell of an affordable and versatile PDA solution.

If in fact this is true - IF...
Nintendo should have had this integrated from the start. but no, they had to beat Sony to market so they could get a bigger install base. Nice, good way to get a head start by releasing an obviously unfinished, rushed product with virtually no good games. I love my DS, I think it's got incredible potential, it's Nintendo that I'm pissed at for botching up the job! I begin to ask myself why I'm still an faNboy...
Better release that online connection soon too!
*end rant*

I think the reason this wasn't integrated from the start is because N wants the DS to be a gaming machine that also will run Palm software, instead of marketing it as a Palm device that also happens to play games.

I'm a little confused about some reactions here. The article says that they licensed software based on the Palm OS, and that they'll reveal a suite of applications at a later date.
I think they're just indirectly announcing that the DS will be marketed as a PDA with PDA style applications.
I, as a PDA and DS user, would welcome it.
I somewhat agree with Flack's point though. Although I wonder if perhaps they're waiting on the PDA aspect so that (a) they can polish it more and (b) they can announce it when PSP hits (to steal a little thunder). All speculation though.

Oh, who to believe?
And my 2 cents, the V = voice.
