Ever since I started collecing NES games and running a NES site, I use to always think everyone called NES as in one word. All my friends call it that thanks to me, and every time I went to NES sites id call them NES World, NES Files etc. But to my horror, I realised that some people instead call it by the letters as in N-E-S. That sounds so wrong @_@

Anyway how do you say it?

Of course, NES stands for Nintendo Entertainment System - so I call it N.E.S.

I say NES, as in "Loch Ness", in my own head. Like if I'm thinking "I want to get some more NES games". If Iam speaking about the NES, I just say "Nintendo".

"I'm going to go play Nintendo."

"I have that game for Nintendo."

"Some fat guy sat on my Nintendo and now it doesn't work."

usw....

By the letters. N.E.S. 8-)

I say it like a word "ness". I don't understand why people would say N.E.S. Any time an acronym makes a pronouncable word, it's spoken as a word. The letters are only said individually if it isn't pronouncable as a word. Examples:

-FBI is not pronouncable as a word so it's said F.B.I.

-SCUBA is pronouncable as a word so it is spoken as such.

LOL
Had this debate many times before.

I am also a big gun nut. Most firearms have letter designations.

FAL, AR15, CETME, AK47, etc....

Well, I use the individual letters for guns.
An "Ack-Fourty Seven" just doesn't sound right- I do, however, know a few people who call FAL's "Fall's" and CETME's "Setme's"

But on NES games, I call it "Nes"- rhymes with Guess.

Wasn't aware this was even an issue.. show me a television commercial that pronounced it as 'Ness', much less the official ones produced by Nintendo of America. Open and shut case.

Well, then there's Nester in those old Nintendo Power comics, but that's more of a pun than anything else.

How about an option for both ?

Its N.E.S. because it stands for Nintendo Entertainment System , which I actually say N.E.S. at times

But for the most part I say nes when talking with fellow gamers.

Look over there in the lake its ole Nessy. :P

Everyone I've ever met in my life say N.E.S. by the letters. If someone asked me about the NES (as in one word), I wouldn't even know what they are talking about.

I've never, ever heard anyone pronouce it as one word. N.E.S for me. I also have a habit of calling it "Regular Nintendo." I think I picked that one up when the SNES first came out. It's stuck ever since. :/

I guess its different, depends were you live etc.

-NES in the NES era we would call it Nintendo
-Once SNES/N64 came out we would call it Original Nintendo
-Once I became a NES collector I call it NES as in one word
- Many People in AUS, call the Super Nintendo, Super Nintendo or Super NES as in one word, not Super N.E.S

The results of this poll do surpise me though, saying it by the letters is more work and sounds kinda weird to me....oh well X_x

I do and whenever I've asked to look at "sness games" at a gamestore I've never had a problem or gotten a puzzled look. It must be a regional thing because in the last 20 years I don't think I've ever heard someone pronounce it by the letters N.E.S. It's always original Nintendo, regular Nintendo, or just ness.

I'm really surprised by this poll. I've allways called it N.E.S. and S.N.E.S., I have never heard anyone say "Ness" or "Sness" - that sounds really wired to me. I didn't think anyone tried to sound it out.

Well, I guess if I ever go to the Classic Gaming Expo I'll know what people mean when they say "Ness games" now.

Who's up for blowing some cash on a call to NOA? If memory serves me right, when I called a GPC back when the SNES was hot, one of the options on the menu was "for any other N.E.S. game, press 5" or something like that, but I'm pretty sure they used the abbreviated letters.

It depends on the situation. If I'm talking to someone that's just a casual gammer I generally referr to it by the letters because chances are they're not going to understand me if I say it as a word. Now if I'm hanging out w/my friends who grew up on the NES I just simply say "Ness".

So do you N.E.S.ers say NESWorld "N.E.S.World"? If so, that's a shame because NessWorld just rolls off the tongue.

I've always called it N.E.S. World, but NESWorld does indeed roll off the tongue. However, I've always thought of the Famicom version of Journey to Silius as RAFWorld rather than R.A.F. World.

Perhaps this is a regional preference?

Its seems from looking at the location of people on this thread that those from North America mainly call it N.E.S. while those from Europe/Australia say NES. In the UK I know it was generally said as one word because I always said NES and I would only have been copying what other people/TV said when I was young. Same with SNES. I remember there was a games programme where the presenter had a lisp and would always pronounce SNES by saying STHNEZ. Quite funny! Saying N.E.S. or S.N.E.S. sounds like a mouthful to me.

Oh and I (and eveyone I know) also say Marry-O! :P

Always, ALWAYS N.E.S. No offense to anyone who says it, but I think "ness" sounds really stupid unless you're talking about the Earthbound character. I've been aware for some time that there are people who pronounce it like that, but thankfully no one I've encountered does, even my buddy that says "Marry-O" (we tease him a little, but I think it might actually be the correct Italian way to say the name since my buddy is 100% Italian).

On rare occasions I'll say "Nintendo", but I try to avoid doing so because it creates confusion as to what "Nintendo" exactly you're talking about (the company? a system? which one?). I think it also makes me sound like some soccer mom that calls everything game-related "the Nintendo". I'm not even going to start saying "original Nintendo", "regular Nintendo", etc.

As for the SNES, I'll say "S.N.E.S.", "Super N.E.S.", or "Super Nintendo". "Sness" is even worse than "ness". o_O Makes me wonder, would any of these people pronounce the "N" in N64 as "nnn" instead of "En"? :P

And as others have pointed out, I'm pretty sure the official pronounciation was "N.E.S." I personally always try to say things correctly. Some people are stubborn about saying things the way they always have or always heard, but it can make you look dumb if you always do it wrong, and even more dumb if you're doing it on purpose. As soon as I find out I'm saying something wrong, I correct myself, even if I'm accustomed to it. When I was first getting into some Japanese stuff, I said everything wrong: hentai as "hen-tay", manga as "mayn-gah", Taito as "tay-toe", Natsume as "Nat-soom", etc. Some of the incorrect pronounciations were really burned into my brain, but I got them all out and now I just naturally pronounce them right.

I'm no clue if I'm right but I say

Hen-tie
Mang-Ga (kinda one G but with emphasis on the second syllabol)
Tie-Toe (pretty sure this one's right as their games usually have a little splash screen with their logo and a voice that reads it)
Naught-soom-may

Correct on all counts. Japanese pronounciation is a lot easier to remember than English pronounciation.

And on the subject of Mario, the name can be prounounced "Merry-o" but the famous plumber has always been "Mah-ree-oh". Judging by game voices and how it is written in katakana. (ma-ri-o)

Aussie2B
03-20-2005, 02:32 AM
Well, almost correct. :P "Hen-tie" and "Tie-toe" are correct (although, if you want to get really technical, the "i" is a separate syllable, but when you see an "i" following an "a", it pretty much always results in a hard "i" sound).

Most people who say "manga" wrong are doing the "a" sound wrong. It should be a soft "o", as opposed to the "a" in the words "man" and "mane". Likewise, the second "a" is a soft "o" sound, but people tend to get that right. Again, if you get technical, the "n" is a separate syllable, but I just say "man-ga".

And for Natsume, it's broken up as "na-tsu-me". You got the "a" sound right, but you should tack the "t" sound onto the "su". The "e" sound in Japanese makes a soft "e" sound (like in "bet"). I find it tricky myself, though. I too often pronounce them as a hard "a", just because that's what naturally comes out sometimes, depending on the word.
