I just got Populous today for the Genesis. Since I could never seem to find a pre Oct. 1991 Genesis 1 system (it doesn't have the "Licensed by Sega" message that appears right when you power on with a cart in it) I got a Game Genie instead. It works great for Starflight. Not so with Populous. I get a red screen.
Now I heard that even using a Game Genie could be tricky so I'm wondering if anyone who has this game and plays via the Genie has had to do any fenagling to get it to work.
Oh, the game did come from a trusted source so I believe 'em when they said it works.
Any ideas?

I really don't know about the Game Genie trick, but in case anyone wants a Sega Genesis Version 1 without the TMSS screen, I have a few core systems at the GOAT Store right now:

That would solve it ;)

Ahhh, that's what I'm talking about. I'll probably order tomorrow. Thanks!

No problem. Gary and I are both pretty big collectors ourselves. We sat down and went through every system we had to determine which was a TMSS one and which wasn't becauseI know that the collector in me wants one without the TMSS :D
If you don't mind me asking, what is the Game Genie trick? At one point, we had a copy of Zany Golf in but no non-TMSS Genesis consoles to play it on. Next time that happens, I want to at least have some options ;)

Basically you connect the game into the Game Genie, make sure the switch is off and then plug the Genie into the deck. Power the unit on and the Genie boots up. Press Start past the start up screen and past the code screen and the game should boot up.

I can confirm that this trick works on "Budokan".
Tested on a Genny 2 and Nomad and it played fine.

Greetings programs.
To get Budokan or any of those unlicensed games to play just plug in any old Sega cart. Turn it on and wait till the blue Sega logo comes on and goes away. Pull the cart without turning off the power. Plug in the locked cart. And hit the reset button.
The lockout is on a coldstart only. Warmstart from reset doesn't clear all the game registers.
This same trick can also be used for some of the early cheats where you get 99 lives in Rambo or Space harrier or Afterburner but I don't remember the exact details.

Neat, but slightly dangerous for the cart and system.

Yes that is true. I would not use any battery backed cart. Or sonic 3. But I can honestly say in the last 13 years I have not caused a problem by doing this. But that's not to say one of my 6 units won't fry tomorrow if I do it.

I fried a Thunder Force III with the cart pulling technique. Genesis games, above all other systems, are most prone to erasure/damage, or whatever happened. I've heard of others damaging their games this way. Hel of a neat trick, but not recommended.

Put in cart and ordered. Thanks for the heads up!
@vulcanjedi: I took the chance and did the swap trick using a Sonic the Hedgehog cart. Populous powered up just fine! Thanks for the tip!
