Can't say I agree with that particular article, but UK Resistance are fantastic in general.
They've been doing their irreverant Sega thing since the Saturn days, and are usually dead on the nail.

I am an enormous, huge, huge VF fan, have been since the first game.

But I still take issue with how negatively he compares Capcom vs. SNK to it. I mean, VF4 to "International Karate", ok, I can see that, but now he's just screwing with 2D fighters in general.

The page seems like a JEFFK-style parody. "I wanna see how many really st000pid things I can write that will get me as much hate mail as my mailbox can possibly hold."

I'll admit I laughed when he compared DOA Volleyball with an old strip poker game.

"The woman on the right doesn't really look like a woman. It could be one of the Doctor Whos." LOL

The Rez - Space Harrier thing at the end is... Great :D

I think I have to say that this statement taken from the DOA Beach Volleyball comparison negates his entire argument right here:

The women on the left look BETTER than real women...

Frankly the whole site is dumb. Grammatically and logically poor arguments supporting a personal preference for newer games. x_x

Frankly, I don't think graphics are relevant when you're talking about retro games. No realistic comparison can be made. I think that gameplay is what matters, and if you enjoy a game, it doesn't matter what it looks like. If the graphics interfere with your enjoyment of a game...well, that's all kinds of different. But it's a flawed argument he makes, pure and simple.

This is a really old site, though either my mind is playing tricks, or he's added some newer games. I'm pretty sure we established this is a parody last time around.

And I think this guy must be a Sega fan IRL. He seems to have too much specalized bile to just be a hater. ;)

He took the time to research retro games, I rekon he's a closet fan.

by saying "he has a point," I mean..

well they are a bit shitty, dont get me wrong I love them.. even though they are shitty... in fact I think I love them BECAUSE they are shitty,

my retro games bring about a change in me when I get them, they take me back to a very happy youth, looking in the shops and dreaming... taking my saved pocket money and having to choose between them, rather than plan to collectively own them all..

the fact is it doesnt matter that they are crap, they are items of etheral value, same way a vangough or lowry is shitty compared to a rembrandt, quality of astetic visuality doesnt reflect thier desirability.

I was seriously reading this with a O_O expression the whole time, it just was...insane!

Then I got to the part about Space Harrier. ROFL

I agree, I agree....I've had a sealed copy of Rez for the longest time, and after everyone hyping it like crazy I opened it to play it several months ago.

Haven't touched it since that day.

Don't really know why people care so much for it, I thought it stank.

Several folks here don't seem to be getting the somewhat acerbic UK:R sense of humour here. When someone is comparing The Hobbit text adventure to PSO, it's really impossible to take seriously. LOL

For clarity:
a) It's not serious. b) While they are certainly hardcore Sega fans (check the rest of the site), they're not placing everything Sega ever made on an untouchable gold-plated pedestal, and are not above poking fun at a company that, lets be honest, made some real mistakes in their time. c) it's very funny (IMO).

Yeah, British humor is hard to understand and does'nt even make me go :/ most of the time. I guess I'll just stick to American humor. :D

Zzzzzzzzzz....

What? What?

I don't think he was trying to make any general statements about "OMG, which gen is bettar?!?111" He was just poking fun at people who are so "retro" they refuse to even look at games in the latest generations. Hence his "Rez/Space Harrier" Joke.

I personally find the old "NES games have gameplay, Gamecube games have graphics" argument a joke. Graphics are an important part of videogames, there's no getting around it. While yeah, there have been quite a few games that had mind bending graphics for their time (Bouncer, Chrono Cross) that were shitty in terms of gameplay, graphics are often an important part of immersion and an indicator of quality in a game. Look at Link to the Past, Chrono Trigger, and Vagrant Story. All have graphics that look dated by the next generation, but they were at impressive for their time, and exemplars of what their machines can do. I'm not going to want to replay a game if I have to strain to see what's going on. The classics tend to be good looking games. Graphics are important. You can tell me that whether I'm blasting through Halo 2 today, or when I'm marveling at the "cinemas" in Ninja Gaiden as an 8 year old. I'm gonna agree with you either time.

Videogames isn't the only place you'll see this sort of dichotomy. In Hip-Hop, there are the "Mainstream" artists that you see on MTV every other day, and then the "Underground" artists, who have die-hard fans, but generally are not known to the world. The fans of the "Mainstream" artists view the "underground" as a joke: Hey, if they were really good, they'd be pimping it on MTV, but instead, they have finite fans, poor production values on their video, and a "dirty" image in general. "Underground" fans view "Mainstream" rap as artificial, over-flashy, and shallow in terms of content. So you have these battles over who's better, neither side really wanting to face the truth that talent can flourish in either venue.

What's the moral of the story? Read the sign on the door before you come in. It doesn't have to be old to be classic, you jokers.

Based on his example we are obvously only talking about graphics and not gameplay here. IMHO a higher percentage of older games have better gameplay than current titles which often rely on graphic quality to overshadow the crap that they attempt to sell us.

Well if this is true then I would guess that the current games are shit compared to what will exist 20 years from now

So in closing.............the games he likes are SHIT.

It's satire...it's funny...get over it. He even has a point: I've gone back and played many games from my childhood and half of them are nowhere near as good as I remember. It's all relative: if you've never experienced 3D graphics then, at the time, you'd think that Pit Fighter was shit hot (actually, scratch out the 'hot' if you've ever "played" the SNES version). Games nowadays aren't "better", but they last longer (usually) and, therefore, hold my attention for longer.

...or neither.

Anyway, a game is a game. Its the fun factor that matters.
Are cards, dice, Yahtzee or Scrabble really so different from an old Atari game? Theyre all simple and dont involve any flashy visuals.

Old or new...fun is fun.

That site reminds me of the Onion.

The best part of the page is the

" * Defender excepted "

at the very bottom. And the Rez / Space Harrier thing. Very cheeky!
