Favorite Name for the new Xbox [Archive]

I know lately a lot of different names were being passed around for the new Xbox and i was wondering what the community thought was the best. I myself like Xbox Next but i'm curious to know what you guys think?? I've listed the most common names and the prototype name.

Xbox 2 at least sounds decent, if not a bit unoriginal. Xbox Next sounds like Japanese english (and I don't mean mispronounced english, I mean like misused english like they often do in Japan.)

And if they use Xbox 360, people that don't get the reference to "degrees" will suspect that it came from the future, and is 359 iterations forward of the Xbox series. I suppose that could help sales. Otherwise, it's a terrible name. What's next, Xbox 720? Xbox 900? Xbox Kickflip McTwist? :P

It's true that Xbox next is bad english. But i also find that it grabs you. It's more creative then just some number and if you accent the next it really makes it sound like it's the next big thing. 360 is just a bad idea, although i've still got lots of love for Xenon.

If Microsoft is going to keep xbox in the name of their next console, Xbox 2 is really the only sensible choice of those listed. All of the other ones sound weird. It's really a toss up though, whether or not they are going to go with the numbered thing like sony, or follow nintendo and have a new name every console.

About Next Box, I think it'd be better as NeXbox. It still retains the name of the first Xbox, has a slightly altered word meaning it's a succesor and it's been combined to make a new marketable hip looking hi-tech word. :D

Yes, but the problem is that they'll be competing with the PlayStation 3, so they probably don't want to go with the number 2, just because the perception will be that it is somehow inferior to a competing system with a higher number. I know WE know the difference, but just for the average consumer, or someone who doesn't know anything about video games, it would be wise not to name it something with a lower number (if it has a number in the name at all).

I like the suggestion of "NeXbox." The important thing about that is that it's unique enough so that when you enter it into a search engine, you can't help but be pointed to information about the new system. On the other hand, if you search for Xbox Next (without using the quotes that cause only that particular phrase to be parsed), you might get articles about the current-gen system that have the word "next" in addition to "Xbox." The same thing worked for Windows XP. All you have to do is search for "XP" to get info about that.

They're all pretty terrible. All sound like shameless attempts to appeal to the lowest common denominator, the braindead teenager who can be easily swayed by the suggestion of "XTREEEEME"ness...oh. Right.

To be fair, though, none of the consoles lately have had very good names. We've got a station, a box, and a cube. Coming soon, the Sony ThingYouPlayVideoGamesOn. Nintendo Revolution makes me think of a bunch of peasants in Les Miserables running through the streets waving controllers.

My opinion is that XBox Next suits Microsoft best. I cant explain why, but a title like XBox 2 is too simple and has been done before. If not XBox Next, then Xenon would be ok, but its always nice to have XBox in the title because this way people that dont follow video games wont get fooled thinking that XBox is made by a company like Sony and Xenon is made by Microsoft if you know what I mean.

Xenon sounds interesting but too geeky for my liking, so I voted for XBOX 2, however Super XBOX is a name I rekon they should of used. How cool does that sound :evil:

I don't understand why companies can't just think up new names for their consoles... especially if the next Microsoft console doesn't end up having backwards compatibility, then "XBox 2" (Or any other mutation of the XBox name) would be rather misleading.

Oh well, I vote for Xenon. I always loved Xenon II on the Amiga.

I'm actually suprised how many people don't really like xbox next. I still think it's a catchy and original, while still keeping the Xbox name. If you bash xbox next for being unoriginal then you should do the same for the super nintendto. Same shit different word.

And how many people find something odd about the name xbox 360? I mean aside from the fact that it sucks, 360 is an obviousl reference to degrees. 360 means coming full circle, or in other words a "revolution". Anyone else think that's odd? I'm not trying to stir rumours, but it's it's a funny coincidence. Xbox 360 has to be a joke because it's so laughably bad, maybe the guy who started it did it for that reason. But who knows.

I voted for Xenon for the same reason. Putting the name Xbox on the console that won't play Xbox games will confuse many uneducated souls. They've been conditioned by Sony and Nintendo's Game Boy line over the last decade to assume that if the system name is basically the same, it will play all their older games. Nintendo was smart to not use Game Boy anywhere in the DS name since it doesn't play ALL GB games; GBA compatibility is more of a bonus.

I say build the names of future consoles around the "shape" motif -- so instead of X-Box, we get X-Sphere, X-Rhombus, X-n-Sided-Polyhedron, etc.

Of the actual rumored names, I like Xbox Next best. Xbox 360 sounds like it's a frisbee or something.

I started this post and i do want to keep it on topic. But in all fairness i don't think that penny arcade comic was off topic. While i did want to know the best of the current names, if people want to come up with new ones (serious ones not jokes) then i won't complain. The PA comic didn't refer to the name, but it was a witty satrie about the next xbox so i think it's a fair post.

Why Xenon? Xenon has to be the most boring of all the noble gases. With helium, you can suck a bit of it back, start saying "follow the yellow brick road" and usually get a few laughs. With neon, you can make some pretty cool looking signs. Argon is handy for lasers (and everybody likes those). With krypton, Superman will be helpless to stop you from taking over the world (or maybe that's kryptonite).

Xenon doesn't seem useful for a whole lot outside of a lab.

While it isn't a rumored name, I personally (in sticking with the X theme) would like it to be:

Not just would it keep the X in it and sound sorta like NextBox, but the word Nexus carries the theme of Xbox Live really well. The definition from Dictionary.com:

1. A means of connection; a link or tie.
2. A connected series or group.
3. The core or center.

So, you'd have a console that sounded sweet, was "a means of connection" to "connect groups" and was the core or center for you to play games on.

Not a bad idea. It shows viision, and that you have a large vocabulary. But it's never gonna happen.

To be honests the name sounds really cool and it fits with life for the reasons you mentioned, but it's just too far away from XBOX.

I know it probably isn't going to happen, but I think it would be neat. And since when did consoles have to follow in a thematic order? We had the Sega Master System, Genesis, Saturn, and Dreamcast. None were remotely related. Nintendo gave us the NES, SNES and N64 that were similar, but now the GameCube.

I know that I would feel less stupid ordering a game for my neXus than for my Xenon system.

On another note about the Xenon name... Think about how that would sound -- Zee Non.

I would like the Zee Non Game.

All those names are pretty lame, but honestly I care more about what it looks like then what its called. I am sick of my giant 70s VCR sized XBOX. If I had to pick a name I would take Microsoft Soneedye.
