We fix game consoles here at the PC shop I work at, and usually when PS2's come in they won't play discs, and it's because they are filled with crud.
Well, some guy brought his in today, and I went to clean it, and there were 2 extra screws on the bottom! And the bottom also detached separately (top, middle, bottom all different pieces). The power supply was different, the controller ports were different, and the drive box itself was different.
What is this? One of the first?

If the model number on the back of the unit is SCPH-30001, then yeah.

Yup! It is.
Are these better at all?

I hear that they're the worst. Some people in the tech forum have much more experience with them.

Although there's a lot of bad apples in the PS2 basket, a lot of the problems could be avoided if the consoles were kept in a clean, dustless place. Me and a couple of friends have one of the firsts, all modded but never had a day's trouble with them.

First three versions of the PS2 have 10 screws in the bottom. Found this out recently when I dissected a v3 for someone to check out the laser unit etc.

My PS2 is one of these models as well. Thing works fine, but it is showing its age. Every so often it'll lock up. Still, I keep it clean and it works pretty good. It also does not read dvd+r's, which I can understand, dvd+r's came out after the first ps2. Any idea if the new slimline model will read dvd+r's?

Actually, we fix tons here. Just never saw an old one.
It's amazing how many variations there are in them too. Not talking about the early ones, but any 2 PS2's seem to have many differences inside!
