Some variations...

Toad's N-Spade instructions

If you picked up a copy of SMB3 close to its release date, you may have noticed that Toad ends his N-Spade game instructions with "Miss twice and your out!". Of course, the rules of the English language state that Toad should've said "you're" instead of "your" because he's really saying "and you are out," and so "you're" (with the apostrophe) is the correct contraction. However, you also may have noticed that there was no more room in the text box to include an apostrophe. In the new version, Toad says "You can only miss twice!" instead of "Miss twice and your out!". Instead of resizing the text box so they could include an apostrophe, they just rewrote the last sentence using the same amount of characters. Pretty smooth, eh?

Also worlds we supposedly renamed...

First release
Grass Land, Desert Hill, Ocean Side, Big Island, The Sky, Iced Land, Pipe Maze, Castle of Koopa

Second release
Grass Land, Desert Land, Water Land, Giant Land, Sky Land, Ice Land, Pipe Land, Dark Land

Princess' second letter

Another change was to Princess Toadstool's letter to Mario after beating World 2. Instead of "Kuribo's shoe," she now says "Goomba's shoe."

Kuribo, as you probably know by now, is the Japanese name for Goombas. Why it wasn't translated the first time is a mystery. In my opinion, they should've left it alone, especially when Nintendo's own SMB3 guide calls it a Kuribo's Shoe. The same letter in Super Mario All-Stars calls it a Kuribo's Shoe as well.

Hmm, when i get home ill be having a look at my SMB3 to check it out!

I'll have to check my two copies later. I do know of two slight label variations from that era. I wonder if those are the two different versions.

Won't the later revision have a -1 suffix on the part number, or something?

I think it was changed *really* early on (mainly because the game sold like gangbusters). Of course, I have the original version, since I got it in April of '90. :D

It would only have a -1 if there was something changed on the label. It would not help identify a specific ROM version.

I have the first version. I know this because I remember thinking that Toad used the wrong word when I played it.
I don't think either one is more rare than the other. But I guess it'd be nice to have both from a Mario fanatic standpoint.

I don't even have to check my copy of SMB3 because I clearly remember the game saying "Giant Land" and not "Big Island". Giant land sounds better. :D

There were at least 2 versions in the US...much was changed. The names of some characters, level names.....I remember a site that documented all this....can't remember where it was...

Anyway, the All Stars version for the SNES was a mix of both versions.

What happened was the original US release had many Japanese version elements left in. Later, some typos were fixed (Miss twice and YOUR out--See, they didn't have room for the apostrophe and the extra 'e' there), and names changed (all the levels were renamed...check out the endings). And remember Kuribo's shoe? That's Goomba's name in Japan. Later, a fixed version was made and released. Neither version is really that rare.

Interesting, my PAL version of SMB3 says something completely different:

"Line up the pictures and get a prize.
You only get one try."

My PAL version of Super Mario All-Stars SMB3 says the same thing.

Oh, I see what you are saying....gotcha. I must have misunderstood. Dunno how I missed the link there...I should finish my morning coffee before posting, heh heh. I'll use Friday as an excuse while I'm at it.

That's interesting about the PAL version though. One chance? I wonder why it was changed. Euro gamers must be considered more hardcore in Nintendo's eyes. LOL

I'm pretty sure you are talking about that spinning type game, that is in every world, and not the card game that appears when you get 80000 points :P

I got SMB3 about a year after it was released, and I had the one that mentioned Kuribo's shoe.
