I was thinking about picking up one of those portable PS2 screens for a long trip I have to take this Christmas, but I've read in several places that you can't actually run the PS2 off a car power supply. Is this true? Did theymake a battery pack or something for the PS2/screen combo (I know they did for the PS1 screen combo)?

I had one and they are damn sweet. But I had to return it because It had a dead pixel andther then that the sound and picture were great .As far as I know they were trying to develop a battery back for it and the xbox but nothing yet.The car adapter is a no go also Ive never heard or seen anything about it.I used it in my honda civic with a power invertor that cost about $60 from walmart.

No, AFAIK you need to get a DC convertor I think it is? Something that will convert the power rating and the plug from polarized to the car adapter. Nothing has been officially licensed by Sony as of yet, since they don't have their own screen like the PS One. I think we at Funcoland are carrying them now, but I'm not sure on the price. You can also grab them at Radioshack, and from what I've heard, you can buy decent ones at Big Lots/Odd Lots.
If you haven't bought the screen yet, you might want to look into the ones by Interact, since we've had a few returns from the ones by Intec (though not as many lately). There is a new one out by Red Hot Games, but no word as of yet how that one performs.

I think you're right abotu the converter. I'm not going to blow $120+ on the screen and then $80 on a converter. Just not worth it.

I retract my previous statement about the car power .I just got the new flyer at eb games and in it was a advertisement for a car adapter for ps2 and xbox .didnt have a price listed though
I have the PS1 and Sony Monitor. I also bought an Interact (I think) car adapter. Works like a charm. Easily powers the unit from the cigarette adapter for long trips. I also can recharge the battery pack with it too.
I picked up a portable DVD player too. It didn't have a screen, but would run off of car power. I rigged that together with the PS1 and monitor and had a very portable and flexible travel system for the kids while we travelled. They could watch movies, play games or listen to CDs.
I also used one of those CD to cassette adapters and played the output from the PS1's headphone jack through the van's steareo system.
The car adapter for the PS1 was less the $20.

As for the Dc to AC converter, you don't need anything massive, there is no way that that thing is drawing anymore then 200 VA check the specs. At that rate you can pick up a 300VA converter at walmart for under $40.
I'm guessing the p2s is drawing .5(more like .3) and the monitor is drawing .75(more like .5) so thats 1.25 x 120(110 house volts) = 150 VA(Voltage Amps)

1 VA = 1 Watt, correct? (P= IV)

I need to pick one of them up actually. Thanks for reminding me! :-)
I have the only TV in the world that isn't compatible with the original Playstation. The big ol' Zenith System 3 without the menu. The screen bounces and bounces... so one of those monitors will do me fine. PS2 games work fine, PS1 games i nthe ps2 still bounce, as does ps1 games in my psx.
Argh, if only money grew on trees.

amps x voltage x PowerFactor = Watts
most powerfactors for computer type stuffs are around .7-.8
watts will never exceed VA
