View Full Version : What strategy RPGs allow you to rank up?

I seem to have a problem that occurs often, I start playing a strategy RPG for awhile and then hit a wall because I didn't let certain people fight enough... one good example is Vanguard Bandits.

So what i'm wondering is, what games allow you to repeat battles, or train in areas to gain levels?

Thanks :)

Arc the Lad 1&2 and tales of the World: narikiri Dungeon 3 all allow you to level up. The Final Fantasy Tactics games have random battles, and you can level up that way, and Tactics Ogre has a controversial way of letting you levcel up called "training" where half your party fights the other half.

What consoles?

Disgaea comes to mind as the last one I played with that, of course that game has levels up to 9999, so they kinda need repeat battles.

Well, I suggest Disgaea again then, it's funny, and there is literally never a true end to battles. There's like...13 chapters of story with several battles each, you can new game+ for multiple endings, several optional areas, and the ability to go into an item you have, and do up to 100 or 200 floors (can't remember, floors are basically a battle each unless you dash through) to level it up. And if that's not enough, you can beat up senators if they don't pass bills you want. Also, all the story levels / optional areas are repeatable as much as you once after you beat them once. There's always stuff to kill.

In Shining Force just repeat battles over and over and before they end, cast Egress to split and start from the beginning again :P

Nice! I never knew that.

What about Vandal Hearts, anyone know about that one? (I'm playing it now)

Or die. Or walk back into town.

I've never played Vandel Hearts, but most SRPGs do allow you to either escape and replay battles (i.e Shining Force) or just replay random battles (i.e. FFT). Acctually the escape ability seems to be almost standard from the SRPGs I've played, and that's basically you're best bet for either catching up weak characters or power leveling (particularly when the levels you're replaying are boss battles). Mmmmmm Vandal Hearts is one of my favorites! :D But I haven't played it in years so I forget :embarrassed: I believe you can retreat from battles to replay them again just like in Shining Force.

Anyway.. always loved Vandal Hearts. It's isometric Shining Force with spurting blood LOL

Ogre Battle 64 had places you could train your units in, for a fee.

Shining Force 2 there actually were random battles. Two that I remember... two areas you had to walk through in your everyday travels that randomly decided to spawn a fight on you.

Kind of annoying tho, actually, since you did a lot of exploration in that game.

Sorta off topic but...

Why the HELL does every single SRPG with the exception of Shining Force have the boring point-to-point travel system with no real exploration? No walking around towns or anything either. Or the "hub" system like all the Nippon Ichi games (Disgaea, Phantom Brave, etc.)

Shining Force shows how it can be done REALLY REALLY well.

What's the "hub" system for those who haven't played those games?

you just get a list of places, and then a list of areas within that place that you can go to for a battle. No real exploration.

You've got a main area- your castle in Disgaea, for example. There you recruit team members, buy goods, weapons, armors, heal yourself, talk to NPCs to get information. Then you leave and go wherever you need to. Usually in these hub systems you just instantly go there, no walking through other places.

Because that's never been the focus of these kinds of games. While it'd be nice, it's really not what the majority of people who play these games are expecting or even looking for.

Hoshigami had the Tower of Boring (forgot the real name), which you could level up your people.

I feel really detached by any game with these point 'n' go interfaces... without real locations to wander in. Almost feels like they just want you to go from battle to battle as quickly as possible, which always takes me away from the immersion of the world.

And it's interesting that since Shining Force really set the standard, that so few games have followed it.

Well.. it kind of depends on the Shining Force doesn't it.. Shining Force 1 & 2 had those 'walk around' sequences where you explored some village or other and spoke to various people. Wheras Shining Force CD and the Game Gear versions, etc. just had you jump from Battle to Battle after some minor dialog sequences.

..At least that's what I thought. I'm sure there are more experts on it than I :P

Now that is classic. I always hate just sitting and leveling my guys.

Legend of Dragoon has a decent place to level in the city of Vellweb and Breath of Fire (SNES) has am awesome place to level. It's where the islan with the pagoda is (Nina has to fly there) you'll fight a few slimes then the big SlimeX thing that gives you 9999 XP. can't ask for much more than that.
