Some of you might remember that about a year or so ago, I did a power rankings on the top 50 SNES games. Everybody ranked their top 25 games, and based on where people ranked the games, the games got a valuation, and then based on that, we had a top 50 SNES power rankings. It was pretty sweet.

Do a search on it. It was a pretty cool exercise and experiment.

I think we should try it again.

I'm thinking that the TurboGrafx-16 would be a good canidate. What everybody does, is they need to take some time, and think about what are the 25 best Hu Cards that were released in the United States that play on a TG-16 system. To make it easy, let's just stick to U.S. Hu cards and not worry about PC Engine games or the CD games. Later we can always open it up to PC Engine Hu cards and CD games. But right now let's just do U.S. released Turbo Hu cards.

You rank the games in order from 1 to 25. Number 1 is your absolute favorite Turbo game, the game that you think provides the most enjoyment of all the turbo lineup. Then number 2 is your favorite game in the turbo lineup, excluding No. 1 and so on and so on. And then you just rank the top 25 like that. Please take some time and think about this. No need to rush. I need a solid 25 people to give me a top 25 list.

The point system will work like this. The #1 ranked game on everybodies list gets 25 points. The #2 ranked game gets 24 points, and so on and so on, all the way down to the 25th ranked game getting one point. Then I will tally everything up, and see where the cards fall. I think it would be quite interesting.

So peoples, please respond and say that you will take a few days and think about the Turbo lineup. Go to the rarity guide and do a search on U.S. released TG-16 games. This will give you a list of every U.S. Hu card. Please only do this ranking if you are somewhat familar with the Turbo. You have to have had some quality times with the games and the system and have a good feel for what the Turbo was all about.

I look forward to getting everbodies list and doing another power ranking. I think it's about time we did some more power rankings.

I think this is a cool idea. The only criticism that I am going to make is that the total number of hucard games is much smaller than SNES games, so I think 25 games is too many to rank. I would stick with maybe 10 for such a small collection. But if you do this, I will definitely participate.

I'd rather do it for the Genesis. The Turbo is more of a niche system anyway.

Ok, I guess we can start with the Genesis. Let's keep it with U.S. released Genesis carts only.

The key factor is, take some time, use the DP Rarity guide for the list of all Genesis games, and try ranking the games from 1 to 25. Then try it again, then try it again, and in about a week or so, you should have a solid list of the 25 best Genesis games that you can be happy with. Then you can email the list to me at

I will compile all the info, and then we will have a power rankings for the 50 best Genesis games. We only need to rank 25 of them, but with everybodies list of 25 I will be able to generate a list of the 50 games that are ranked the most.

The key factor though is that we need as much participation in this as possible. The more people that email me a list, the better our end results will be.

Please don't email me a list right away, take some time and actually think about this. Make sure you have a list that you feel is completely up to par and that you are comfortable with. Don't try to do it completely off memory. You will forget about some games that should be ranked. And you need to rank the games several times and make adjustments.

But it should be quite fun, and when you feel that your list is solid and up to par, then shoot me a email , and once I got 20 people's lists, then I will do the calculations and post the results.

couple of questions.

1. are we ranking them in order of how much we like them or how great the game is. I'm only asking since I've played some great games that I didn't really like that much since they weren't my type of game.

2. I'm guessing there will be no listing of a series. in the DP top 50 they do things like Sonic (series), Streets of Rage (series). If you wanted all those games in your top 25 you would need to list them individually I would think.

1. Good question - I think the best way to do the list is to rank the games as if you had a good friend that had never played any Genesis games, never had a Genesis, and he was interested in giving the Genesis a try. You would compile a list of the 25 best Genesis games, as if you hadn't already played them, and the 25 games that would be the best experience to someone that hadn't experienced it yet.

For example, maybe you've played Kid Chameleon a few times, and you are now bored with that game. So normally, you wouldn't rank that game very high, because you've already played it a number of times and you aren't as interested in it. But the way you should look at this list, is ranking the games as if you hadn't experienced them yet.

2. This is an important question. Thanks for asking it. I personally HATE it when games are listed as a series. I like to judge each game individually. So rank all the games individually, if they really have the power to stand alone, then they should.

Ok, right now we have 6 people that are down with the power rankings. The first system we are rolling with is Genesis, and we are going with U.S. carts that were released at retail. U.S. games that you could buy at a store. I would prefer it, if we could have 25 people participate in this. Right now we have 6 people, so we need another 19 Rountable members to help us out.

Here is who we got right now:

Guys, be sure to take your time on this....

No need to super rush it. Make sure you are very comfortable with where you ranked the top 25 Genny games.

There isn't any question that this is going to be a very hard list to make. To trim so many great games to a list of 25.

I can tell you that I'm going to have to leave a ton of great games off my top 25 list. I can easily rank 50 of them, but I think 25 is a good cutoff point, to make it so that it's something that's dooable that people can respond back to.

I think what I'm going to do is just write down about 75 or 100 Genesis games that I think are damn good, and then I"m going to have to trim it down to 25. It's going to be really damn tough.

REMEMBER, DO NOT GIVE ME SERIES OF GAMES, RANK EACH GAME INDIVIDUALLY!!!!!!!!!

Of course that makes it even tougher, but we are talking about the cream of the crop.

Also, the results probably won't be ready till next weekend, so if you send your list right away, but you would like to adjust something, and make a change, you can always send me a new revised list, just be sure to get it to me by like next Thursday or so, so by the weekend I can have everything tallied up.

With Captain Yashiro and SuperNES joining the group, we now have 8 guys, we still need 17 more.

Each Sonic game would need to be ranked individually.

Eventually we finally had enough people, but it took quite a long time. Now it seems that people are much more enthusiastic about the Power Rankings which is very cool. I'm so glad that people are down for this.

You know I was thinking recently, which is a very dangerous thing for me to do..... anyway, I was thinking that wouldn't it be awesome if somebody could actually put together a Retro Games Power Ranking website.

I don't have any HTML skills or anything, but if somebody who has done websites before, and would be interested in undertaking a huge project, simply as a labor of love to old school videogames would be interested, then I would help as much as I can to the project. In fact, we could even take donations to pay for the web hosting services or whatever. I mean certainly, try to get it as dirt cheap as possible.

Here is my vision. You have to be a DP member. The guy that will make the site will give DP members a password that they can use at the site. Then they use the password to enter in their lists for the various sytems. The lists are saved and the results automatically tally up. Constantly changing and evolving as more and more people participate. I'm not sure how hard it would be to make such an automated system. But man, wouldn't it be freaking sweet. I mean, if you had every single system in there from the first Atari all the way to like Dreamcast. That would be awesome. You can log in, and update your list, make a change to your list, and the results would automatically update.

Anybody that logs onto the site would be able to view the latest updated Power Rankings. On the left side you would list all the systems, and you click on it, and it would show you the latest power rankings.

You know what would really be sweet? As the games are listed, you would actually see a little thumbnail screenshot of the game!

Man, tell me that wouldn't be a pretty cool site to check out.

Really if you think about it, wouldn't it be cool if DP added Power Rankings as a feature to this site?

I mean, they already have the list of all the games for all the systems.

So right now, only have 9 peoples lists, plus mine for a total of 10. Supposedly another 12 people have promised lists. We need a minimum of 20 people to do this. I was actually hoping for closer to 30 people. If I don't have 20+ lists by midnight eastern time on Thursday, I might have to extend the deadline to midnight eastern time on Saturday. Of course that will delay the results as well.

if you want a more accurate poll, people will not rank games, only give lists. the most popular/best games will get the most votes. you also avoid giving weight to lame games by asshats that give a first place votes to DJ Boy just for kicks.

Well, there has been lots of discussion, during the last power rankings, about the best way to give a point system to the games that people rank to try to most accurately determine what the best games are based on peoples lists that have been submitted.

One of the things that we decided was, that games that appear over and over again on everybodies list should get a bonus for constantly getting ranked. And games that are ranked super high, but only appear on one list, should probably get a deduction.

For example, lets say a certain game is ranked 25th on 24 different lists. Well, being ranked 25th gives the game 1 point. So it would have 24 points. Yet you have some other game that gets ranked No. 1 on one persons list, but doesn't appear on anybody else's list. That game would get 25 points for being ranked No.1.

So a game that only appeared on 1 list, would actually end up being ranked ahead of a game that appeared on 24 lists. And that simply is not a good thing. Consistency to me is a more important trait of a great game.

And like you said, you get that occasional person that has a very strange list of games. I don't want to discount anybodies lists, but sometimes you can get some weird picks. Ideally, you would have tons and tons of people submit lists, and then that one or two weirdos that send you a horrible ranking wouldn't really screw up the overall power rankings.

So it's definitely a fine line.

My initial thought is that if a game is ranked in the top 5 of anybodies list, and if that game doesn't show up on any other list that is submitted, then that game should get dinged with a 10 point penalty. For example, if a game is ranked No.1, it gets 25 points. But if it doesn't show up on anybody else's list, then it should get dinged 10 points, and it would then have 15 points.

And I also think that games should get one extra point for each additional list that they appear on. Also, I think that a game that appears on every single list, should get a extra bonus of 15 points.

But here's the deal. I'm not a dictator, so I shouldn't completely decide the rules for this. I think that everybody should voice their opinion and then we can vote on it.

So I'm going to start a new thread that is titled:

"Power Rankings Point System Discussion"

In this new thread I will explain the default system that I was going to use, and then we can discuss if things should be removed or added or droped or altered or whatever.

Once we have everybodies top 25 list submitted, we can use that raw data any way that we want.

Anyways, if anybody wants to discuss the point system, then please discuss that in the other thread. I would discuss it here, but I think it would get too confusing.

I'll try to have one in the next couple of days... It's hard to choose.

As for the earlier Turbo idea, what about an overarching multi-region list. Once imports+CD games are taken into account I would be hard pressed to narrow it down to just 25, whereas with US HuCards I would just be able to manage the 25.

I think there enough folks around these parts with sufficient knowledge of the PCE for a 25 game list, though I could do a 50 no sweat. I know I went berserk collecting the imports at one time.... even if I wouldn't part with any of them. They are all quite playable or I wouldn't have 'em. I've got at least 60, but that would probably never have happened if I was Kanji-shy. Or very budget conscious.....

I probably shoudn't even bother asking but do you think there is a snowballs chance in hell of finding enough people for a PCFX list that isn't just the usual 100% import friendly suspects?
