Hard question, but being brought up on genesis I would have to say good ol' genny. I loved all the sonic games, and it had many good arcade ports, I love hgolden axe II

go with SNES. there's mario, yoshi's island, a ton of super scope games, mario paint, plus my favorite, donkey kong country!
'course if you're gonna get serious into collecting, you should have 'em both. ;)
P.S. i don't have a virtualboy either, if it makes you feel any better.

well are you going for collecting or playing?
Genesis would be better to collect for IMO, and for playing its really up to you, SNES is a great console if you are into platformers and RPG's, and genesis really has everything.

If you hate cartoony graphics, go with the Genesis. If you want the overall better collection of game, in my opinion, it's the SNES hands down. There are classics in every genre. But everyone has different tastes.
Really, they're both good systems. You won't go wrong either way, as long as you know which games to get.

Genesis. Beyond most of the snes rpgs there isn't much that I find too interesting on the system. The genesis has sonic of course among tons of great arcade ports, shooters and quite a few rpg/strategy gems.

Why not get both, then get the best games for both? that way you're not tearing yourself apart over a silly choice like this :P

I have to second (third? fourth?) the sentiment. Both systems have enough unique games that any fan of 16-bit gaming should own. I still have over half a dozen Genesis units I paid $5 (or less) for, and SNES systems can be easily found for $10-$20. I say get em both and let the game gods sort em out!

SNES all the way!!! The only reason I would pick Genesis, is if you don't have that much money. SNES games go for alot of money, and most Genesis titles are cheap as hell.

Not really true, and like most system libraries, it all depends on what games you're talking about and where you're buying them.

Both have great games; the SNES DOES have Earthbound, but the Genesis has games like Crusader of Centy and Shining Force II. I have both (and I suggest you do the same), but if you can't, I think I'd go with the Genesis, just because it's cheaper (for now). Once you get the money, get the SNES, and voila! You'll have both! :)

I think he was meaning to put in a "However," before the "SNES games," but I could be totally wrong, and he just wanted to contradict himself... LOL

both systems have expensive games, both have cheap games. But if you are into RPG's both systems have their expensive ones, especialy SNES. get both, and enjoy.

What I mean is that SNES games cost alot more than Genesis games (on average). If you have 100 complete SNES games and 100 complete Genesis games, the SNES collection is going to be worth at least twice as much if not more. With the exception of a couple dozen rare titles, Genesis games are very cheap and most cost less than $5, while most complete SNES games cost much more.

The SNES baby!! Personal preference of course, but I personally feel that most games that were released for both systems turned out better on nintendo.

SNES, hands down. The system is technically superior to the Genesis (not that that's particularly relevant now), has better controllers and, IMHO, has FAR superior games. I would say that the SNES has at least 20 to 30 "Must Have" titles. I can barely think of 5 or 6 for the Genesis.

And the current state of Atari...
And the current state of GCE...
And the current state of Coleco...
The "current state" of a videogame company has no bearing on what it offered in the past. And the Genesis and SNES aren't exactly "fresh off the shelf" systems nowadays. Your point is not only unfounded, it's fanboyish and wrong.
Bah.

The current state of Sega isn't that bad, as far as I'm concerned.
Some people look at their software-only direction now as a kind of demotion, but it's really just a different business idea. Instead of having consoles that are propelled solely by the great 1st- and 2nd-party games with no 3rd party support, now they can shill out their high-demand developers to the highest bidder. No matter whether XBox, Gamecube, or PS2 is on top, Sega always wins.
Besides, if the Dreamcast had sold as well in Japan as it did in the US, that would've lasted longer, too.
Oh, and Sega of America are marketting idiots. That hurt Sega overall, but that has absolutely nothing to do with the quality of the games.
I still personally think SNES is better than Genesis, but there's no doubting that both systems were huge successes. The point is, I can think of about 10 bigger reasons why the Saturn failed and why the Dreamcast was phased out, none of which are "because Nintendo had better games."
So, I think Sega's current state is completely irrelevent to how good the Genesis was.

Hey ya'll, les stop the feudin and the fightin.
Seriously though, get both. Both systems together will hardly set you back. Once you have them, start out by just going for the titles that interest you for each system.

If you can only get one right now, it really depends on what types of games you want to play. If you're into RPG's, go with SNES, if you're into fighters, go with Genesis. Most games are a fairly even match on both systems, but tend to look better on SNES and play better on Genesis. So pick what you prefer, graphics or gameplay. This holds true for just about all the games on both systems. The Genesis was the extreme system and the SNES was the family system. So you either want style over substance or substance over style. Both have their advantages and disadvantages. But I can tell you this, I have nearly 500 Genesis games and less than 200 SNES games. Now which one sounds like I enjoyed it more? I prefer to think of my SNES as a sequel to my Genesis. The SNES has all the games that my Genesis should've had but never did, due to hardware limitations or just stupid licensing issues. So it's just like my PlayStation in relation to my Saturn. I prefer to think of my PlayStation as a sequel to my Saturn, and again for the exact same reasons. You may be the opposite, and indeed alot of people are. There's nothing wrong with that either. But really, it will always be a matter of personal taste.

It is a tough call either way
If it comes down to money, Genesis all the way. Even rare games dont go beyond the $50.00 that much. Many game chains are liquidating what they have at low prices due to low demand(3 to 10 dollars)
If it comes down to RPGs, the nod has to go to SNES. Final Fantasy II, III, Lufia I, II, Earthbound, Chrono Trigger to just name a few quality gems on the system.
If it comes down to platform titles(Sonic, Mario), either one is a good call. I prefer Mario, but the sonic series is a good one to just name one.
With the Genesis you can get an adapter to play Sega Master System games, as well as a Sega CD addon and a 32X addon. Forget the 32X, but the Sega CD has some good titiles(I might know a little about Sega CD....)
The Snes is more available everywhere, although the games tend to cost a little bit more.
either one, you are going to get 700+ games available to collect and play! Have fun!
