View Full Version : So... who did the right thing and picked up the new Ys?

Ys The Ark of Napishtim is fantastic. The graphics are 3D and they unfortunately replaced the anime cinema sequences with CGI, but it has the original Japanese music! The game has grown into an action RPG now, but the move (originally done in Ys V, though I've yet to play through that one) is a good one, updating the series for all. It is a beautiful game with a nice old school feel. I highly recommend it to everyone, especially Ys fans.

Pick it up so we get the next Ys currently in development! Maybe we can get an anthology rerelease of IV & V!?!?

I went into Eb to pick it up and lo and behold there was a mint Suikoden III for 30 bucks. So I got that instead, I had never even seen one in the wild. I'll probably go back and get Y's next week.

I'm hearing through the grapevine that there are codes that unlock the original anime sequences and Japanese voice acting. Unfortunately none of the stores around me have it in stock yet, but I will definetely be picking it up in the future.

I'm also getting the import Ys III for PS2. Have it on preorder. :)

Does it star anyone from the previous games? (I can't remember their names offhand right now)

I'm a little out of the loop. Where does this game fall in the series?

SCORE! Now I can play the complete series! I already went through 1 through 4 on the TG 16/PCE CD.

The new Ys is number 6. Ys Book I & II, Ys III: Wanderers From Ys and Ys IV: The Dawn of Ys were released on the TG 16/PCE CD. I & II have been released on several platforms (SMS, Famicom, various Japanese computer formats) and there were also rereleases on PC, Saturn and, I think, PSX or PS2 in the Falcom Classics series. Ys IV: Mask of the Sun (not related to Dawn) and Ys V were released for the SFC.

I love Ys. :)

Adol's buddy Dogi also appears in the opening cinema. Adol Christin is back as the red-haired hero. I think the girl in the opening cinema may be from Ys V as well.

Ys III: Wanderers From Ys
SNES port of that game also.

I picked mine up last night. Not the bumpercar fest I expected like the old Y's games.

Unfortunately, prior to playing this new Y's game, my past Y's experience have only been on 8-bit. I've only played Y's: Vanished Omens on SMS (beaten that)and Y's Book II on Famicom (stuck on Solomon Temple)

The TG16 and other high-bit Y's games have pretty much slipped right by me.

Megadrive/Genesis too! Forgot. Funny since I just got the SFC version in that auction and have the Genesis version!

I'm sounding like quite the Fanboi! I guess I kinda am for Ys. The US has been neglected for a while, and I do occasionally whip out the I & II on Turbografx for a quick go, similar to how people reread LOTR and such.

Check out EB. I know when I was in there this week they had TONS of the game and the hint guide.

I may get this one later at a cheaper price and when I have money. :)

BTW, who is the makers of the Y's series? Why did Konami decide to licence and port this over?

I played a roughly translated hack of the PC version and it was awesome. I totally intend to get this at some point, as Y's is probably my favorite series of all time. I miss it, and I'm so glad somebody had the nads to finally let it come over to the US.

There have been multiple collections of earlier titles, including some of the PS2, that were actually DENIED by Sony, apparently. Can you guess why?

For those who would rather have the anime than CG or the original Japanese than English, the codes are on Gamefaqs. Unfortunately, you *HAVE* to start a new game to use them.

I believe they were made by a company called Falcom

You would be correct sir. Anyways, To awnser the original question. Yes, I picked up the game last night at EB and all seems good so far. However, it does suffer from some rather cheap deaths and horried voice acting. But hey, to have another english Y's game it's all good.

Terra, from Ys5 is in it (She's the blonde girl on the back cover of the game.) I haven't beaten it yet, but she was in the intro and haven't seen her again since, though I've heard that I'm pretty close to seeing her again.

Again, in the intro, when it starts, Adol seems to be travelling with Dogi again, Adol must've gotten back together with him after going off on his own in Ys 5.

Oooh it's out! I've been waiting for this game for months. And I was drooling over the jap only pc version before that.

*happy dance*

So no don't have it yet. But it'll be mine within a month I'm sure.

Can someone relate the gameplay of this to any other RPG? I dont like many RPG's, but this one just... I dunno, seems intresting.

Oh man, I loved Ys III on the Genesis, even though it became INSANELY hard at the end. So what system is this new Ys on? I've only played Ys III, but I loved every minute of it, and would love to play the rest of the series.

Ys V & VI play a lot like the 2D Zeldas or Alundras, only with MUCH less to ZERO emphasis on puzzle solving. They are more about the story and aesthetic. V is a bit on the lame side, but the new PS2 version of VI is mindblowing. Ys III is the red headed stepchild with a Zelda 2-ish take on the series. It is a side scroller, but I like it far more than Zelda 2. Sadly gets a bad rap. III is the most widely available Ys title in the US. Ys I & II are overhead like V & VI, but they have an interestingly different and super simple combat system. You simply run into enemies to kill them. II adds ranged magic attacks and more strategy, but it remains on the easy side. It is actually alot better than it sounds.

All of the games are known first and foremost for their music, but they also feature ethereal anime babes and an overall style that is distinct and unique. It is a purist thing.

So what system is this new Ys on?

PS2. The original Ys VI was on Japanese Windows.

So did Falcon go bankrupt? Is that why Konami published the game? Who actually made it?

The Japanese PC version is developed and published by Falcom. Falcom is a huge company in Japan, but as late, most of their stuff is not getting brought to the US. Probably because a lot of it plays like older, mid-to-late-90's adventure games and RPG's. They're still around, but Americans tende to ignore them. We're too busy playing GTA, you see.

Did I say a month? Make that 42 hours. I woke up this morning and found little EB baggie waiting beside the moniter for me. Inside were Ys and Baten Kaitos. (:

Now I just can't wait to go home and play it.

Edit: And SoulBlazer I can't vouch for the turbografix games, but as far as I know none of the Ys games have been published in the US by Falcom. The master system version of Ys 1 was published by Sega, and Ys III was published by Renovation, for the genesis anyway. I don't know who handled the other ports but I doubt it was Falcom.

Hudson published the Turbo Grafx version of Ys I.II and III.
American Sammy published the SNES version of Ys III.
Tonkin House published the Super Famicom version of Ys III.

Edit: Stupid spelling errors!

Yes, I think you're right, Daria. The only Y's game I played was the Y's 3 for the SNES and I can't recall who published that right now. I liked the game and I do plan to get this once price drops and I have money to spend. :)

I'd love to see Brandish come back. No doubt about that.

I have a question, since there's a normal and hard mode, I'm already starting a new game on Hard mode, will I get a shitty ending if I beat it on normal?

That's what irks me about next generation games. Depending on what difficulty it's on, you dont know whether you're gonna get a shitty ending and also don't know if you have the time to replay through for hidden stuff.

Falcom is a PC publisher. Except for a few exceptions, all of their games on the consoles were handled by another company. This has been their business practice since they first started.

I'd love to see a Brandish compilation translated. It's too bad the only Brandish we got was for a console, because the series is supposed to be much better on the PC.

Decided I felt like playing something new so I picked it up today. It was kind of a gamble considering I've only played Ys III on SNES, and I didn't do any research, but I'm happy with it so far. The vioce acting is hilarious though...the in game stuff isn't too bad, but the cutscenes are horrible. LOL So far it was a good choice. :)

Picked it up along with GT4. I haven't gotten around to playing it yet due to college/work/GT4. Also in a couple days, I'm going to pick up Devil May Cry 3 which will only increase my backload of games to play *wishes for college to wrap up :/ *

I picked it up for $40 last week at the local Sam Goody...so far it looks very promising. My only complaint however is that I heard that it is relatively short, but you gotta take what you can get.
