Quoted from the IGN article above,
So, while Bungie said it's working on something else, well, we have different news. Sure, the smart creative guys at Bungie are working on something else, but you had better bet your bottom dollar they're also working on the next Halo. The release of Halo 3 at the precise launch of PS3 is a pure, military tactical move, similar to the PS2's greatest lineup ever launching simultaneously with the launch of the Xbox and GameCube. It's designed to counter Sony's upcoming launch with the best weapon Earth has on its side, Master Chief. Go, John 17, go! Save Earth from Sony
I really like Microsofts tactics here. I mean, What better plan then to release Halo 3 on the launch of the PS3*? Remember, When Halo 2 came out there was a big spike in Xbox sales. This maybe what Microsoft needs to do to rain on Sony's parade.
I love it....Oh and for the record, I'm getting both systems, So don't call me no fanboy. Though I am biased at times... :D
***Awaits Bashers and Fanboys***
No go ahead, I'm interested in what everyone has to say about Microsofts tactics here if indeed it plays out like the article mentions.

If they do this, it will be the 3rd Halo game that is rushed out the door.

How so? PS3 doesn't come out til next year. They've already got a story for it. Chances are they'll end up using the havok engine again, and I'm pretty sure at this point in their life they've got enough staff members to work on both halo 3 and their next game.
They wouldn't have been rushed with halo 2 if they had, you know, started work on it BEFORE E3 2003.

The best part of the article is right here:
"Yes, we have news about Halo 3. IGN learned last week while drinking secretly imported beers with its informants that Microsoft is prepared for the battle of its life in this upcoming console war. From what we understand, Bungie is hard at work on, not so surprisingly, Halo 3, which will be ready day and date with the launch of PlayStation 3"
I have a hard time believing what IGN says they heard over beer.
I also have a hard time believing a release for Halo 3 will be able to steal much away from the PS3 hype that will be going on at the time.

I don't know...have you seen the pictures of the lines at the Halo 2 release? This could be an extremely smart move on Microsofts part.

Great move on Microsoft if they do, indeed, release it then.
Although I won't be getting Halo 3. Heh. I don't really care for Halo or Halo 2. Both are hugely overated in my opinion.

Yes I have, and I remember long lines and high demand when the PS2 was released. The smartest thing Sony could do would be to make sure that they have more systems available this time(I had to wait months to get it), and to make sure they hype the shit out of their system. A strong lineup at launch would not hurt either.

I don't really care for the Halo titles but this is a smart move on MS' part to counter most of the PS3's punch.

Why start work on Halo 3 when the maps in Halo 2 are growing mold? I'm about to trade in the game from sheer boredom if new maps don't hit soon. Also, the gametypes could use a dumptruck full of polish. I hate playing the same gametype on the same map about half the time I play.

It is a smart move, but MS is going to need more than 1 well-known killer app to defeat Sony. :/

Of course it'll be a launch title. When Microsoft released XBox, they didn't know Halo was going to become one of the best-selling games with some of the most rabid fans ever. Now it's the reason at least half of their customers own an XBox at all. If they want the biggest impact on launch day, putting Halo 3 on the shelf right next to it was a no-brainer, I thought.
Bill Gates would hold Bungie at gunpoint if they didn't start working on the next Halo game soon.

I thought that the Xbox 2 (or whatever its going to be called) is slated to be released later this year. From everything that I've heard it will most certainly be out before the PS3. Doesn't it make sense then that Hale 3 will be a Xbox 2 game and therefore use a different graphic engine?

I was skeptical as anybody when the Xbox was released, but Microsoft has proven to me that they're not playing around in their quest to transform videogames into $$$$.
I would not put this by them, and I call it a brilliant move.

...because other game companies are creating games for charity?
This sort of thing is irritating. Videogames have always been about "$$$$", from the first company to the last.

I think he means that he's convienced (as I allways HAVE been) that Microsoft is in this for the long fight, that they want to make serious money from this, that they are not going to pull out, and they are willing to lose money now to win the hearts and minds of gamers for their NEXT system (which could be out by Christmas but I still doubt that).

Wow boss. Did you read "OH MY GOD, MICROSOFT IS OUT TO GET MONEY THEY ARE SO EVIL NINTENDO IS THE ONLY MORAL COMPANY OUT THERE!!!" between what I actually said? Because I can tell you for sure I intended no such thing.

Havok is a physics engine. I'm not sure how much of Halo 3 they got done working on halo 2 as far as levels designs go, but if they have some already, that'll cut time down. They've already got plenty of sound effects recorded from the first two games-it'd be mostly dialogue and actually making the levels and the graphics that'd suck the time. Which still, with the kind of staff bungie has now, should be enough.
As for Halo 2 downloadable maps, they've been hinting that they'll be out within a couple weeks, and that there's a number of them that are coming together (at least 2, but I'm expecting more like 4 or 5).

So that's where all of the "downloadable" content went...
I wonder if we will ever get to see a decent map put up for download, or if they all went to be used in Halo 3.
