How do I know if it is PAL or NTSC? This is confusing the heck out of me. There are so many box art variants and similarities that I can't tell the difference. O_O

What's the barcode number? You can tell by that.

*edit - if you don't have the box -

I know this doesn't answer the question, but I just have to say. Castle of Illusion is a great, underrated platformer. I played the Genesis version a lot more though. I've grown to almost hate platformers now, I've gotten so sick of them, but Castle of Illusion I can still pop in from time to time and have fun.

Actually, Disney made a lot of good platformers in the 8-bit and 16-bit era. Castle of Illusion, Land of Illusion, Mickey Mania, Quackshot, Aladdin, and of course Duck Tales. Good times. Castle of Illusion I played the most of, though.

drummy, show him those Ebay auctions you showed me...

This was kind of odd...there were some PAL versions of this game with the USA cover...but the back of the label has the 7 languages...

And vice-versa in the USA...PAL cover...but with an english writen label on the back...

Thanks, but how sure are you? Ghouls, if NeoZeedeater is right, then that would explain the copy that the guy had.

Ghouls' comments have me thinking that maybe both regions got both front covers. If that's the case then the number of languages on the back and the barcode would probably be the way to tell the region.

The pictures I showed should be correct though because they show the instruction booklets. The US one has a tall English only book while the International has a wide(multilanguage) book.

You showed me the auctions, so that questions my judgement, which now I'm confused...this opens up a whole new theory of what really happened between the Euro and USA releases LOL

It's my understanding that PAL SMS games play normally on NTSC Master Systems/Power Base Converters, so the difference is moot (unless you want both versions or something).

Actually, Castle of Illusion and Land of Illusion were made by Sega, Mickey Mania was made by Sony, while Aladdin (Genesis version) was made by Virgin and Aladdin (SNES version) and DuckTales were by Capcom. They might have all been Disney-related games, but none were developed by Disney.

I only want the US one due to its rarity. And it seems I don't know which one it is...

Is the text on the back of the box in English only or is it in multiple languages? If it's multilanguage, then it's probably either an European or a Canadian copy. If it's all in English and has a mention of Tonka, then it's definitely American.

It's easy...the US copy will:

Have NEW in yellow at the top, have the blue and white SMS logo about the title, be in all english on the back of the box, start with 080016 for the barcode and have a US style manual. If you're going the ebay route defenitely ask. After amassing a near complete sms collection mostly through ebay, everytime I didn't ask I'd get a damn PAL version. Got quite frustrating.

Good luck finding it!

Thanks for the explanation and the luck!

There's only the 2 covers AFAIK - can anyone show me proof of a Euro-style cover with just English on the back or a US-style cover with multiple languages?

The confusion may have arisen because it's not uncommon to find late-era US games in Europe - it appears that unsold stock was imported here after the US SMS market died.

...and the fact that in Canada, most SMS games were sold with the Euro box and manual (taking advantage of the no-zone factor for the games).
