box art: US, europe and japan.

everyone knows the US gets the big shaft when it comes to cool box art (posters too) . the japanese cover/ads/slogans/posters ALWAYS look much cooler, usually have unique scenes and/or main character art.

while surfing ebay for some cool mega drive games i started looking at the australian and european release and WOW do the box arts suck. check out the designs for sonic 2 and 3 at this auction: http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&category=11060&item=8171130907&rd=1

sonic 2 has a really queer yellow border and generally looks wierd while sonic 3 is aweful all around, the art and the stupid blue border, personally i liked the US releases' art and red border much more.

so yeah, just my little rant, im sure there are plenty more examples of european box art being lamer than US, which in turn is lamer than japan.

I think the box art drove many away from purchasing the game actualy...

Sonic 3 in Europe took a whole new turn, was pretty unique I thought....

Yet I like how Sonic 1-2-3 in Japan stuck to the original pattern pretty much...the white background

Ive always preferred the blue PAL borders to the US red ones personally. Same with the sonic cases, but Im not really in a position to be impartial :)

The sexy silver ozisoft cases with the blue border cant be beat though.

I can't stand the bright red of Genesis packaging, so I got no problem with the European blue borders.

However, I'll never get used to how Dreamcast stuff is blue in Europe. I'm so accustomed to the orange.

Sometimes crappy non Japanese box art can really steer players from the very essence of the game, or if the localized game was based off an anime, they totally bastardize its roots by changing the box cover.

Look at Demon Sword for NES. A generic Conan lookalike is on the cover, and look what happened.....


IT BLINDED US FROM THE FACT THAT IT WAS A SEQUEL TO LEGEND OF KAGE!!! :angry: Apparently there were some Japanophobes around the offices at Taito.
