I don't feel suckered in to buying Collector's Editions, because I don't buy them just because they are CE. The only way I plunk down the extra cash is if it has features I care about.
I got the RE CE because it was limited, and I'm getting Doom 3 CE because I want the extras, but the Halo 2 LE extras don't interest me so I didn't bother.
DVD's do piss me off, that's way now I don't really bother to buy special edition unless it has something the original doesn't like DTS encoding, or a significant ammount of added footage. I almost never watch the special features, or deleated scenes (most of the time there was a reason they were deleated), so I can't see paying extra $ for something I'll never watch.

I try not to buy brand new games unless they are cheap from the start, or they are definitly going to be awsome, like God of War which I simply cant wait for :)

I only buy Special Edition / Collector's Editions or Pre-Orders if they add something to the game. For instance: Pokemon Colosseum's bonus disc gave Jirachi; Freedom Force vs. the 3rd Reich gave 3 extra characters. That's stuff that's worth spending a little extra for.
But a metallic box? Not really.

Most of the time it's more than just a metallic box. I know the C.E. of Doom 3 will include,
From ebgames.com..
*Full versions of the original ULTIMATE DOOM and DOOM II. With single player or deathmatch and co-op in 2-4 player split-screen modes.
* G4: VIDEO GAME TV “Icons” feature: “Behind the scenes of DOOM 3”
* Interviews with the id Software team
* Concept art: storyboard and sketch gallery
Splinter Cell: CT.
The Tom Clancy’s Splinter Cell Chaos Theory Limited Collectors Edition includes:
* A unique metallic embossed collector box.
* 2-DVD set contains (contents subject to change in final shipping)
The entire Splinter Cell Chaos Theory game and a second DVD with bonus content:

Nah, can't really afford brand new games, and in nearly all cases it's better to wait. It's not like collector's editions are going to just disappear off the face of the planet, and in most cases, the prices go down over time, not up. Remember the Arc the Lad Collection for PlayStation? A lot of people freaked out about it as if they had to buy it immediately for the MSRP of $70. I still don't have it myself, but if I wanted to, I could go on eBay and buy a complete minty set with all the bonus crap for what, 35-50 bucks?
Preorder bonuses annoy me, but again, you can almost always save money if you wait. Even if it means you have to spend a bit of cash to get the preorder item on eBay, you can usually get the game for a lot less, so it balances out. I was one of the suckers that preordered Chrono Cross and got the cheap ass clock. Boy do I wish I just waited and bought the game for like 15-20 bucks and spent 5-10 to get the clock (actually, knowing how lame the clock is, I wouldn't buy it at all, but I digress). That's sort of what I'm doing with King of Fighters: Maximum Impact. My boyfriend really wanted the Terry Bogard hat, so I bought it for 10 bucks. Later on we'll pick up the game when it's really cheap. Ultimately, we'll spend less than had we preordered the game and got the hat for free.

If it's no more than $5-$10 more for a game I already had planned or or considered buying, then I might go for it. Otherwise I can handle not getting it.

Got the watch for 10 bucks on Ebay, the game mint and complete for 40 bucks at a used game store...I never buy new unless you can get it cheap (preordered my Halo 2 LE for $33.00 at ecost.com), or if it's cheap already (picked up that X-box Japanese hex strategy game for $20.00 new at EB today, Dai something or another...pretty sure it will be self-limiting in terms of sales).
Just saw a Halo 2 LE for $34.99 at a used game store...for every game that appreciates in value over time, 200 depreciate. Pay your money, take your chances.

I buy about one game brand-spankin'-sparkly-new every year. This year it's going to be Doom 3 CE. I wanted Doom3 as soon as I could get it (for the Xbox, that is, not my creaky old comp), and I was happy to pay ten bucks to get Doom / Doom II with split-screen for my Xbox. Since Doom is, like, one of the best games EVAR.
But in general I am completely resistant to this whole collector's edition hoo-ha.
They can keep there damn box, besides it doesn't fit in my DVD case holder.
I've never goten a specially addition anything. And the only LE I have and Sonic and Shenmue, and I got those used for cheap.
Save your money, theyll pop up later in the future.

for me it's not really the CE and LE that suck me into buying sprees as there ain't too many of those in Europe, it's more the sheer amount of good games coming out
i still have a HUGE backlog for current gen that looks like this:
PS2
a lot of rpgs (recently got BoF: DQ and Star Ocean, getting Dark Chronicle soon, lots still missing), Jak&Dexter Series, Ratchet&Clank Series, Sly 1+2, a lot of 2D games (Metal Slug 3, KoF, SF2 Anniversary, Capcom Fighting Jam) and others
Gamecube
Metroid Prime 2, Paper Mario, Tales of Symphonia, Baten Kaitos, Resident Evil 4, Mario Golf, Mario Power Tennis, Beach Spikers, MGS: TS, Splinter Cell 1+2, True Crime, Mario Party 5+6, Donkey Kong Jungle Beat, Animal Crossing, F-Zero GX, Harvest Moon, Prince of Persia 1+2, Sphinx, Zelda Four Swords, Pac-Man Vs and so on
as you can see there's just no end to the list, and although i'm shelling out as much money as possible on games (not too much right now though) there's just no way to keep up with good releases right now, well, i guess i'll have to wait until the next gen arrives as i won't be buying the systems at launch anyway so i have spare money then to buy all the cheap games stores will throw out, despite backwards compatibility

for me it's even worst...if the pre-order gift is something nice like an artbook it's practically been sold me...so very sad
