Doubtful. The Game Gear has a larger color palette than the SMS, so it probably wouldn't be able to display the games properly. It'd be an interesting piece of hardware, though, no doubt. :)

Like Dimitri says, the GG has a larger colour palete than the SMS... much larger. Other than that, the two machines are virtually identical. I've heard of someone hacking a GG cart to play on a SMS, but the colors were all wrong... white was green, red was blue, text was unreadable, that sort of thing. You also might just get junk... if the GG cart assigns a pixel a particular colour (like light magenta 1112) and the SMS only goes up to 512 colours, then the SMS either replaces it with another colour that might not even be close or just goes nuts.
TecToy (of Brazil) evidentally took some Game Gear games and reprogrammed them to work on the SMS (the SMS lasted into the late 90's in Brazil.) I do believe that Virtua Fighter Animation started out as a GG game before being altered to run on the SMS, but I am a moron and might be wrong about that one.
Cheers

This is true. If you compare the GG and SMS Virtua Fighters side by side you can see the SMS version was slightly reduced in color.

It's possible to re-code GG games a bit so they'll run on a SMS, but a simple hardware converter is impossible for all but the few GG games that run in SMS mode (Example: Chase HQ).

On top of this, the interrupt that handles the pause button on the SMS is not t all the same as the start button on the GG.
Some SMS games, if you dump then onto a GG flash cart permanently stay on pause once the game starts...total lockout.
Games can be reprogrammed to run on SMS, but the color pallettes have to be reassigned, amon g other things. Also, SMS has higher resolution, and using the same GG rom data, the SMS can actually display the game better.

A while ago anagrama mentioned me this:

This is what I've been waiting for, well, since I first saw that crappy GG screen.
I've yet to try this myself 'cause my GG is the single ASIC version and I haven't had a chance to trace the pins for that but boy I'm exited!

GameGear is more powerful when it comes to Color...
No sir, there was no convertor made, due to the fact, the SMS cannot handle the colors on most games released on GG

we know the SMS cant handle GG games, but is there a way to use a power base convertor and a genesis? the Power Base is not an SMS, it only locks out the main 68000 processor and allows exclusive access to the z80 which is what the SMS used. other than that, i would think that the genesis would have as large a color pallete as a game gear.
