This thread is designed to allow us to discuss how best to have a point system to accurately determine what we feel are the best games for various systems.

The whole idea for a Power Rankings is that games will actually be ranked in order from the absolute cream of the crop, to very, very good, Etc. I think it would be a great asset to see how people rank games for various systems and then you can get a good idea of what games are universally loved and ranked really high. Then if that is a new system to you, that you are going to start collecting for, or start playing the games for that system, I think looking at the power rankings for that system is a great way to see which games you should probably try first. Plus, even if you know a system really well, you might find a particular game ranked way higher than you thought, and that could be the inspiration to try a game that normally you would have never tried. That's the main thing that I take away from a power ranking of a system's games.

So, to get back to the topic at hand, this thread is for our discussion of how to best do a point system to rank the games in the best possible order.

Right now we are doing a power ranking for the Sega Genesis. Everybody is encouraged to send their list of the very best Genesis games, ranked from No.1 to No. 25.

The basic point system that one can use is to simply give 25 points to every game that is ranked No.1. Then 24 points to every game that is ranked 2nd overall. Then 23 points to every game that is ranked third overall. etc, etc, all the way down to the 25th game getting 1 point.

Then you add everything up, and see where the games fall. The game with the most overall points, get's the No.1 spot on the power rankings and so on and so on and so on.

But, I think some other factors have to be taken into account. The biggest factor is that a game that appears over and over on alot of peoples lists should benefit from appearing over and over again. By the same token, a game that appears on very few lists, but maybe is ranked really, really high, should get some kind of penalty, to take away some points.

Now, at first you might think, "What? Take points away from a game just because it isn't on that many lists? Well yes. The reason why is that let's say somebody ranks a certain game No.1, and that game doesn't appear on any other lists in the ranking. Well that game gets 25 points. Then lets take a game that is ranked 25th on 20 different lists. That game would get 20 points.

Which game should really be ranked higher on a power rankings?

My guess would be the one that consistently appears over and over again.

That is why in my system, I would give a game 1 bonus point for each additional list it appears on. This would come after all the other points have been tallied up. For example a game that appears on 20 lists, would get 19 bonus points, at the very end. One point for each additional list that it appears on.

Also, in my system, a game that is ranked in the top 5 picks of somebodies rankings, that doesn't show up in at least 3 more lists, should get a 10 point penalty, at the very end.

This would help balance things out, so that the occasional game that get's ranked super high on one persons list, but doesn't show up on anybody elses list, shouldn't outperform a game that is ranked lower but consistently shows up on tons of lists.

Now, is my proposed system perfect?

Hell no.

But it's decent.

If you have a better idea, then please discuss it in this thread. That is what this thread is for.
