Playable or not, 'boss' characters are pretty cool. There's nothing like a final match between you and the toughest fighter the game has to offer. As usual, the 'boss' has somekind authority over the destinies of the other characters.

Motaro! He's definitely different from other bosses. That move where he grabs you and knocks you across the screen is wicked!

It's Geese. Seriously, who else can compare to the sheer style and evil of the man? He even let himself die at the end of real bout just to make his death tear apart Terry.

Geese never really had much style, in my opinion, but he gets my vote for being a purebred bastard as far as villains go.
Design-wise, however, I like Dizzy from Guilty Gear X. She's rather creepy in appearance, and her wings are goofy-awesome.

I think the best is Geese Howard, this guy is very cool and also i always i use it in many games. Itīs cool, bad and very strong. Mizuki is very easy to beat, try to beat Howard in hard mode in Fatal Fury!!!, itīs impossible!!!!

I know this may sound strange, but I always got a kick out of the "Unknown" jobbers that you had to beat in Season mode of Smackdown 2 on PSOne, in order to unlock things. It reminded me of back in the 80's when you would watch wrestling and there would be about 5 matches of big name stars squashing regular joes.

Sodom (Final Fight)
Wong Wong (Final Fight III)
Blood (Captain Commando)
The Butcher (Cadillacs and Dinosaurs)

Well if were talking about just fighting games i would have to say that I have spent more than enough quarters trying to beat thanos from mavel superheroes.
or else in other games the various gannon's from zelda and that liquid snake guy from metal gear solid I don't think i ever beat it :(

if we are talking fighting games i would have to say M.Bison . If it's not a fighting game i would say it's a toss us between Tyrant of Resident evil fame or Mother Brain of Super Metroid ( never could beat her without a game genie ) :(

Okay, bending the concept a bit, I'd say my favorite bosses are....
Sinistar. C'mon!
Evil Otto. Menaced me in both Venture and Berzerk (and Frenzy!!), that lousy head.
The CPU from TRON.
For fighting games, I have a soft spot for psuedo-Darth Vader despot Bilstien, from Star Gladiator and Plasma Sword.

My favorite bosses would have to be even though they are not really that hard:
Super Mario 2's bosses
and smb 3's bosses.
They are just pretty unique to me. And fun to beat!
I also like Motherbrain, and M.Bison.

Dark Force from Phantasy Star 2...
Not even the final boss in the game (Mother Brain is soooo much easier) but incredibly difficult to beat... took control of your characters which was unique at the time, and he covered the WHOLE FREAKING SCREEN!!!!!!!!!

Seven Force from Gunstar Heroes, Zero from KoF2000, Zankuro Minazuki from the Samurai Shodown series, Red Falcon of Contra III, the last guy from Salamander 2, (a Gradius last boss that fights back? Unheard of!) and any and every boss from the R-Type series, Axelay, and the whole friggin' Castlevania saga. And that's not all! I find bosses to be some of the greatest parts of any game that has them. I can't refuse the classics either, like Bowser, M. Bison, Geese Howard, Space Harrier's Godarni, and even all the guys from Kung Fu/Spartan X.

Wayler from Axelay stage 5! I never found him very difficult to beat, but he just looks so cool on that lava planet with all those flames coming out of him. When you get there and he rises up out of the lava spitting fire and clawing at you, it's just the best moment ever in 16bit gaming history, IMO. I always wanted to just die when I got to him so I could admire his awesome power. Except he's actually pretty weak as far as bosses go, especially with his heart exposed for you to blast him back into the fiery pit. But still, you just have to appreciate all the artwork that went into him and his level. Best boss ever!

Unique,interesting bosses are the reason I play videogames! I love mosters of all kinds, but really hate humanoids as far as bosses go.

Do you mean the Reznors? I like them too :)
but my favourite boss character would be Death from Castlevania series.
runner up is the final fight in Sonic 2 (genesis) both Silver Sonic and the Mecha Robotnik.
I don't like fighting games very much, but... I would pick Shao Khan: "You will die!!" haha
