We're having that exact same discussion on the CCJVQ forum and we have a French member who currently lives in Japan. He explains that, in fact, the katana are pronounced like "Reese" (but without the R).

Oh no, not this again. I'm having flashbacks of arguments with my brother 15 years ago over the pronunciation of Ys: Vanished Omens...

There is no way it's pronounced "wize." It's Ys, not Y's. A Y is only pronounced "Why" when it's the noun.

The gaming press likes to say it pronounced "ease." This is close, but a little off. The correct pronunciation is closer to "peace" without the P sound.

The Ys book 1 & 2 actors pronounce it that way, the Anime actors pronounce it that way, and the pronunciation guides in the Japanese manuals tell you to pronounce it that way (look at the title screen of the Master System Ys).

Not only that, but the name (and the game's story) comes from a famous Breton myth about a mythical city. In that language, it's pronounced "eese," but with a shorter "ee" sound.

This is the correct interpretation. It's "eese". If you watch the anime, that's how they pronounce it in the toon as well, every time. You can say it another way....but you'd be wrong. Just like jslithy and Lady Jaye said... like Reese without the R.

Hmmm, I've too read that it's "ease", but now that I think about it, consideringly the knowledge of Japanese I've picked up in the past few years, it sounds like "eese" would make more sense. It all depends on the katakana:

i-su = "eese"
i-zu = "ease"
wa-i-zu = "wise"
a-i-zu = "eyes"

Stuff like "iz" would be impossible since there's no soft "i" sound in Japanese. Granted, it's not a native Japanese word or anything, but since it's created by the Japanese, the most official pronunciation would be whatever the katakana says. Anybody got a screen shot of the Japanese title screen?

Basically, the I is followed by a dash that extends the vowel. The SU comes after that. So, although it is written as (romanized) eesu, the U is not pronounced.

As far as pronouncing it like the English word "ease" goes, that is not entirely correct either since the S in that word takes a Z sound. You pronounce the S in Y's as an S, not a Z.

So, if it makes it easier to understand, Pronounce it like the first syllable in Easter. That is the final answer. :)

I figure it's like when I (an island boy) would have to read literature with characters names that that were probably french or german in origin... and read the entire book with the name pronunciations more than likely entirely wrong. LOL

Doesn't matter to me. It's the story, or in this case the game that counts. I'll continue calling it "ease" :)

I have to say it's still one of the best SMS games I had the pleasure of playing. And don't tell me about how the Turbo CD version is better.. That wasn't out yet at the time. :P
