The most recent issue of DP got me thinking. Well, got me thinking of something other than beer and lesbians.
Have any of you been using the same four letter name to name your main RPG (or otherwise) character for years at a time?
I've been using Link since the early 90's. If the game lets you choose a name and it will involve a quest...his name is Link. As long as it isnt online...

My real name is too big for four letters, so I mainly I use HIRO or GPRN.

GYNX has been the star of many an RPG in my house. Even when you can use 10 or more letters.

This Adam rescued Midgar from a huge meteor a few years ago. ;)

I always condense my name down to "Gram". Half of the world spells it (incorrectly) that way anyway.

Though it's not the same thing, my friend names every lead character "Shampoo" that he can, after a Mr. Show sketch.

my real name is "Jan", so i don't have these problems, i usually go with the given name if there is one though

Male Charcters are always: Dude, Cool, or Rad
Female: Babe and Chic

I do this for DW3 and any other 4 letter name RPGs...

Usually it's a vowel removal program for me, When I used to name characters after me and friends.

What REALLY pisses me off though, is how most of todays' games allow only 8 freaking letters.

You know how mad I am I have to keep using DANGRBOY because one more stupid letter won't fit?

i like "Ryo" and when there's more than one person to name i always like to make one of the characters sorta gangsta. i've got parties with names like "Ryo", "Bjorn", "Poe", and "BigL". "Snoop" is a hit with me if i'm allowed to use 5 letters.

pokémon's a great game for naming stuff. i had a riot with that.

I usually go with my name "Matt". In the arcade games where you only get to choose 3 letters I always put "MAT" because my real initials spell "MAM" and that sounds stupid.

Never used the same name twice in an RPG, don't ever plan on it.

Well if I can fit it. Roland is the name I use. From the Dark Tower series of books.

If It is 4 or less. It's Ash, from Evil Dead.

Jesus if it's required to name the main character, otherwise I use the games default naming. Jesus always makes Suikoden more interesting ;)

Back in the day i used "Sega" as my name.....if three letters were the limit it would be SEG.

Eventually i got around to using the name "Bob" for all my three-letter naming. Bob isnt my real name, it just stems from an old running joke i had with my friends in high school.

Nowadays i just name game characters after characters from "Excel Saga"

All this talk of naming characters reminds me of playing "Oregon Trail" in grade school.

"Beavis was eaten by a bear"

"Butthead drowned" LOL

Haha, so I'm not the only one. I never use Jesus as the name for the main character, but if I have to name a full party, Jesus usually ends up being the last character. And if I get to choose appearance too, I pick the one that looks like the most like Jesus. :P

I'm a default kinda person too, but when I'm forced to pick a name, I have no consistency. My nickname is four letters, "Tina", but consideringly most main characters are guys, I don't like to use it. Sometimes I steal my boyfriend's nickname, "Andy" (a terrible bastardization of Andreas I made up, but I like it better than "Dre" :P ), but it becomes a problem telling whose file is whose since he uses it constantly in games too. o_O

One time I went completely crazy after playing Milon's Secret Castle and named my Shining Force 2 main character "FINDSAW". :) I played through the whole game that way.

Usually I'll leave the default names, but If it's required I'll usually go with Mike.

i use my real name, Eric. or sometimes in fantasy games i change it to "Erik" cause is sounds more medieval. buti usually leave the default name if there is one. in pokemon, i'm "yellow", or "silver", and in FFVII, i'm "cloud". on old-skool 3-letter arcade games, iuse my initials, EWA, which always reminds me of "emu".

Sotenga
03-03-2005, 07:12 PM
MIKE suffices, on the grounds that it fits perfectly and that it's my name.

...

Though, LEON is also a freaking cool name... and is the first name of my alter-ego. Heh...

That episode ruled!
"No! I'm from New Freeland! I wanna be an American!"
David Cross rules too.

Lately it's been "Shoodley" as awhile back there was a criminal in the local paper w/ that name...his REAL name. :hmm: @_@ O_O

I'm not glorifying him, just thought it was "interesting".

Apologies to all the other "Shoodleys" out there! LOL

Way back I used to use KEYS, or KEY in the arcades when you were limited to three characters.

Since I earned the name "Vermin" about six years ago or so, I've changed my four-letter name to VERM.

For years it's been CPH (my initials) but recently my latest web alias 'Ezri' has taken precedence.

When I can, these days I just prefer to use default names. In old games where there *aren't* default names to choose, I always went with my own name, which is also four letters. Sometimes I also use Rico, just because I like the name Rico. And strangely enough, I got that name from the cheesy bad movie Judge Dredd.

If I'm in a naughty mood, I tend to sometimes use, shall we say, "derogatory" four-letter names for some characters.

Longer names I've been using either "Maleldil" or "Oyarsa"

kudos to anyone who knows those 2 references without googling it ;)
