Hey everyone!

I'm looking to get some feedback for this year's Saturday night party. We're starting early this year, in hopes we can top the good time everyone had last year :)

I'm looking for comments or criticism about last year's party, as well. I'm quite aware that there were people who were upset that they missed the party due to being unaware of its location; we're going to work on that, however, we still won't know the actual room number of the suite until after check-in time on Saturday.

I ALSO have a question I'd like you to answer for me: If we opened a PayPal account to accept donations toward the cost of the suite, or the alcohol, etc, would you all be willing to chip in a couple bucks? Or would you rather have the party BYOB?

I had a great time last year so no real complaints for me. Since it's mostly a DP only party, when someone comes to the booth to get their DP name tag we can tell them the details. As far as donations, if I have any money left after actually paying for the trip, then I'll gladly give some to you ;)

Also, I'll give you a hand again as I did last year.

It took me about 12 minutes to stagger from the party hotel back to the one I was staying in.

It was well hidden :P

Last year's "after party" was a personal highlight for the organizers in case you hadn't noticed the pictures of me holding five beers at once, or the ones where Sean is hugging me (that's just NOT Sean). We had a blast and you can count on us to support whatever you need.

New shotglasses are a must. Those things are great mementos.

Better promotion of the time and place before the party is a must, too. I know a few people didn't know where it was or even that there WAS a party.

I think donations are a good idea - or maybe just have a simple cover charge. You do want to keep the crowd to a manageable size as well (last year was really close to TOO big).

Just let me know what you need!

Those are already in the works :)

This is something I've been concerned about, as well. As it stands right now, we STILL won't know the actual room number until the day of the party (ie, Saturday morning) after check-in time. I'm hoping there may be some way we can get this nailed down earlier, but no promises.

I think donations are a good idea - or maybe just have a simple cover charge.

We've tossed around the idea of a cover charge, but it still makes us kind of uncomfortable. As you pointed out, however, it COULD also serve as double duty to limit the number of people in attendance. As much as we would LOVE to have everyone at the party, fire codes and hotel management are prohibitive. But you've made me curious about this pavillion?

digitalpress
03-08-2005, 01:00 PM
The pavilliion is a really large outdoors "room" (for lack of a better word).

OOH almost forgot. I have a pciture. This is from the inside.

Just one comment about cover charges.
Would a cover charge be to cover the person's share of the booze?
Because there's no way in hell any of you are going to get any firewater down my throat......i don't know if i'm the only one with that sentiment.....

Yes, that party was full of great, hazy memories, most notably Sean pointing out to me that I was drunk. Because I didn't know?

Oh, So you guys get an extra hotel room or area for the party?
For some reason, I was under the assumption that it was in someone's hotel room.
That's fine......Thanks for clearing that up.
In that case, i'm more than willing to fork out some dough for a cover charge.

@Kamino: there is no "I will pay or I won't pay". If they institute a cover charge, you either pay or you find another party to go to! Last year was really big and many people didn't even know about it - I can't even imagine the magnitude of this years' party. It's going to *require* a cover charge, IMHO.

Jaime, if there's any problem getting info about the area from the hotel please let me know. There's no reason why we shouldn't be able to secure a location in advance.

I know what you're saying........i just wanted to know what the cover charge was covering, that's all :P i've no qualms with paying...and it *seemed* as if the cover charge was being *Discussed* in this thread....

Oh no, not trampled at all. I just wanted to make sure that anyone else who reads this understands that if there's a cover charge, you pay it. Honestly, this would be a very low charge anyway so it's hardly worth mentioning.

We also have some sponsorship, which covered quite a bit of the costs last year - but you just never know from year to year.

That's a good question. If I remember I pretty much followed Mayhem and QOF there after the auction, and it was already going on at that time.

I'd pay a cover charge though-something that damn fun deserves it.

I had a great time at the party last year. The beef jerky was a good call, and I loved the shot glasses. It might be nice to have some entertainment at the party (a few consoles set up, live music, whatever). I would have no problem paying a cover charge. You coule even have a few companies sponsor the party (Packrat Video Games comes to mind for some reason ;) ).

Best,

Actuallly it's a shock to me that this was not already happening...
what the blue hell IS this party about? Is this the CGE version of the wisconsin "sit in a field around a bonfire and drink" party?
I'm just curious. I've NEVER gone to these sorts of parties, but i figure i may as well since i'll be out there anyway...

I personally liked the party in Vegas the year before better, we had a bunch of video games, plus drinks for the drinkers. I'm not much of a drinker, so last year wasn't as fun since by the time I got there everyone was drunk and the place smelled like a bar :P .

Yes. Its not a tournament or a raffle. Its everyone in one room just chatting and drinking, and eating pizza. Its a great time if your social, but if you would rather sit in your room and play games I recommend doing that. I have fun and I don't drink. I just talked with Danny, papastu, Dave and took pics of Uber, and I was perfectly sober (obviously). Its a social get together.

04-18-2005, 09:23 PM
Okay! I wanted to update this thread as well. We're still looking for some help!

-Anyone willing or interested in providing some kind of snacks for the party. Last year, Danny took care of this for us (thanks again!), but is unable to do so this year. We're talking chips, dip, pretzels, etc.

-We're also looking into providing pizza for the party. We're not planning on buying dinner for everyone attending, just giving them something to hold down all the alcohol with *lol* However, due to a higher cost for the room this year, we may not be able to cover this. If that happens, we'll likely be taking up a collection from party attendees to chip in toward pizza, so bring a couple bucks with you if you want to eat!

-As mentioned above, the suite for the party is a bit more expensive this year, and we may be looking at a deficit in our party budget. So, if anyone else would be interested in sponsoring the party, please let us know! We may also take up some kind of PayPal donation before CGE, however, donations are NOT mandatory for attendance. We'd like to keep the party "free" for everyone!

And that's it for updates for now! Feel free to contact me with any questions or comments!

Not sure if this would be the best place or not, but a friend of mine and I have been kicking around the idea of holding a tournament on a really fun, quick, head to head game. We'll handle everything that needs to be done to make it happen. We had discussed making it a part of the party, but not sure if that's appropriate or not. Let me know if you want to discuss this further.

Thx!

Count me in on that. I'd been considering ditching the party to go check out some strip clubs, but a tourney is just the ticket...

I don't think a cover charge is too far fetched. even $5 to cover pizza, snacks and a cool shot glass is a deal.

I'll throw in $20, because the party was awesome last year.
I did go to bed before security came bacause I had too much and passed out in my room.

but you have to take me with you when we go shopping for alcohol.

ALSO anybody want to play some card games with me? I really want to play a few games of pep band asshole.

Events that have happened at CGE parties I've been to:

- A rousing game of Joyboard Combat. Two players, playing Atari Combat, but having to steer with the rare - and awkward - foot-controlled Joyboard. Wow, was that fun!

- A party I heard of had an NES hooked up and people were playing shooting games with the Zapper. However, you had to be airborne in some John Woo-like shooting-while-flying-through-the-air position for your shots to count. Had to have been murder on the bed everyone was landing on.

- A preview of Game ON! The Retrogamer's Trivia Game. Questions were tosed out while 15 people scratched their heads and shouted answers. Great fun.

- Seeing an Atari Video Music fired up and pulsing to the beat of 80's music.

- Previews of games to be released at the show the next day can often be found.

Always a great time at these things. And just sitting around meeting people is also not to be underestimated. ;)

That was so much fun, they should make another appearace. I can bring my set (I was thinking about it anyway), maybe the rummy game you made too? I haven't found anyone who would play it with me, and I've really wanted to give it a good run through...

And I'd be up for a cover charge (hopefully I'll have SOME money left this year) or whatever, donation for pizza or more drinks, whatever.

I was refering to drinking card games. I'd love to get 6 or 8 people playing asshole, circle of death, speedbump, or thumbmaster.

Also Danny and I will be out there for 5 days. So I'll drink and play cards everynight.

As far as playing games during the party, we can use my systems that I left out there last year. I know I have a box full of systems and controllers out there. Maybe some 4 player games would be good like smash bros., wario ware, or burnout 3. ( I might be able to steal a NWC cart if I can get in dannys safety deposit box....of course I get to keep it after) :)

Jamie? how big is the suite this year? Last year the room was pretty packed. But it was fun.

I will go around and ask for pizza cash again this year if everyone is hungry. After everyone had a few drinks in them they were willing to shell out cash

Yeah, and I will not be doing shots with Mayhem this year...well not as many as last year.

I'll have more information about the party coming out very shortly, Dave :) If people REALLY want to play games at the party, I suppose we could set something up, but it's not something we were planning on. You can play games just about every other night of the year, we're hoping for this to be more of a "socializing" time :) Plus, I'm not sure there'll be room enough to spare, considering last year's crowd, and what we're expecting this year. Maybe someone with a room close by the suite would like to host some gaming instead?

Haven't played Asshole in years (though we discovered that The Great Dalmuti, a card game a non-drinking game-loving friend brought out to play, is in fact Asshole, so we put the alcohol back in the game as he watched in horror/amusement), and haven't tried the others.

If I remember, I'll bring the Cocoa Crunchies board, though we may need little tokens as pieces (I don't have enough).

Maybe someone with a room close by the suite would like to host some gaming instead?

Maybe there should be one "main party" and a bunch of "open door parties" (like a college dorm) if a lot of people wind up getting their rooms on the same floor as the "main party". I could see it now:

Gun Game Party
DDR Party
NES Party
SNES Party
Sega Party
Fighter Party
(insert party here)

and...

...The Main Room Party!!! :rocker: :band: :rocker:

aka The Drunk & Butt Naked Party  :bareass:

aka The Pimps & Ho's Party :pimp:

Yeah, nothing like a drunk DDR party!!! ;)

Stupid question regarding booze in California: where you go buy it? Is it sold only in state-run liquor store, or is it more generally accessible (ie. sold in supermarkets and convenience stores as well)? This question is about beer as well as for any hard liquor (here in Quebec, domestic beer and cheap wine is sold in supermarkets and convenience stores, while good-quality wine, import beer and all hard liquor are sold in province-run alcohol stores).

last year we got into a cab and asked where 'he' would go to buy, where is the cheapest. He took us in a semi sketchy looking area, but all was good and cheap. But since no people have a concept of drinking besides their 3 beers, we took most of it home.

Oh, you're talking about yourself, and not for the party. I was going to say, out of ALL the beer that was bought last year, the only remainder was a hodge-podge 12 pack the next morning!

Sarah: Hard alcohol in the states must be sold by a licensed store, but not necessarily by a government-run licensed store. I know Maine USED to have agency liquor stores (gov't), but they are slowly getting rid of all of them due to state budgeting. You can buy beer/wine/etc at gas stations, convenience stores, grocery stores, but the only places in MY area with licences to sell hard liquor are the grocery stores (and not even all of those; Walmart's, for instance, doesn't carry hard liquor).

In PA you can't even buy beer from gas stations. My friend goes to college up there, and he said you need to go to some special store to buy any kind of beer/wine/liquor.
