View Full Version : Phantasy Star II question-Keep Nei Alive glitch/cheat thing

PS fans probably know the trick where you can keep Nei alive after her inevitable death with NeiFirst in Climatrol. You basically have Shir steal some moondew from one of the stores and use it on Nei after she is killed. I guess the programmers supposed Shir wouldn't be of a high enough level yet to steal the Moondew and didn't think to program around this, is my guess.

Most say that you still lose her after the battle, even if you use this cheat.
There is also talk that there is a way to actually keep her alive permanently though. Anyone have any info on this?

Man, no PS II fans here?

Baby Jesus is crying.

Actually, I could have sworn when I used the trick she stayed alive.

And hate to be a pain, but think you could change the title and add *Spoilers* to the title?

I'm sure someone here hasn't played it yet.

I was going to add "spoilers," but it wouldn't fit. :)

Well, the game is from 89 or 90, so it's pretty old.....and it happens relatively early on, so I figured everyone would know this by now anyway...

I actually did the Moon Dew trick last night and she did revive, but she was dead right after nonetheless....if there is a trick to make her stay alive, I'm really interested now that I've tried the glitch!

What I found funny is that the clone labs clerk said they couldn't revive her because she isn't human...yet they did fine doing it earlier in the game. Whatever.

Maybe if you asked me 12 years ago or something... I can't even remember the first thing about the game now LOL

Did you check gamefaqs.com?

Sure did. They didn't have anything on this particular issue. I think one of the FAQs asked pretty much what I am asking in this thread and to contact him if someone finds the info. So...no luck there. :)

Maybe it's because their laywers told them to say that rather than any lack of technical prowess on the part of the Clone Labs. ;)

If you level up like mad and are able to actually kill Neifirst using only Nei, Nei still dies. They're the same creature, remember. If one dies, so does the other.

If you steal some Moondew and bring Nei back to life in the middle of the Neifirst battle, Nei...still dies. She has to.

There is no legitimate way to keep Nei alive for the rest of the game.

God I love Phantasy Star. I'm replaying the first one right now, I'm about to head to Baya Malay.

EDIT: I should mention that keeping Nei alive is NOT a glitch. The programmers allowed it intentionally, and wrote alternate text for the death scene.

Hmmm. They did, Red? Know anywhere I can see a transcript to see the differences? I originally beat the game 12 years ago and am going through it again now, so I don't remember the text when she dies...

That's so cool...I always thought it was an oversight...

I wonder what would happen if one hacked a save file or something to keep her alive.....

But I'd still ike to know if there's a legitimate way to do it...

- Nei, hold on!
- "There's no hope left for me. Please Rolf don't let them ever repeat the mistake they
made when they made me. I hope everyone on Algo can find happiness in their new
life."
- After saying this, Nei died. Rolf laid Nei's lifeless body gently on the ground.
- Nei! We will avenge you!

- "Rolf, there's no hope for me. If Neifirst is dead, I must die, too."
- And in so saying, Nei silently closed her eyes.
- Rolf calls Nei's name once again. But his plaintive cry merely echoes and re-echoes.

If you hack Nei back into your party...the game goes on as usual. She'll remain a selectable character. It's not as if any cutscenes depend on your party members.

::Shakes him:: SHE'S DEAD! SHE'S NOT COMING BACK! NO MATTER WHAT YOU DO, OR WHAT YOU WISH! SHE'S DEAD!!!

DL is getting very emotional.

Yes, I remember this being said after Nei kills her, then the rest of the part goes on to fight NeiFirst.

Then this is said:

"Rolf, there's no hope for me. If Neifirst is dead, I must die, too."
- And in so saying, Nei silently closed her eyes.
- Rolf calls Nei's name once again. But his plaintive cry merely echoes and re-echoes.

In fact, the above quote was said when I revived her and she survived the battle. There is different text, Red, if she dies (no revival)?

The first quote happens when Neifirst kills Nei, aka this is the text most people will read. The second quote happens in either of the freakish scenarios: Nei kills Neifirst by herself, or you revive Nei mid-battle and kill Neifirst as a party. It makes sense either way, y'know. That's the only alternate text I was referring to.

EDIT: For good measure, here's the text after Nei dies (which happens no matter what, man, GET OVER IT)

- Rolf calls Nei's name once again. But his plaintive cry merely echoes and re-echos.
- The weather control system is shaking terrifically. Now Neifirst is dead, there is no one
controlling it. All the pent-up energy is pouring into the system!
- What has happened? Rolf and the others quickly decide to return to Paseo.

Wait a minute....wasn't Nei's real name Aerith? ;)

No. I played Phantasy Star II on my SEGA GENESIS, and her name was Nei. I also grew up with Dr. Robotnick and Princess Toadstool, and played Final Fantasy II on my SNES. Dammit.

LOL I'm totally over it, just wondering if there really was a way to keep her alive...probably not...much like the Aerith myth.

What I was wondering before, Red, was what text comes up in place of that second quote if there is no revival done and Nei does not kill Neifirst? Or, does it just skip the second quote and go straight to the third quote?

That second quote happens no matter what, I think. I don't know, my save game is at home (I reserved spot two just for the Neifirst fight). I know for sure that this is all that's in the script, though.
