Was Zaxxon developed in the US or Japan?

I have been searching for the answer but I can never find concrete proof either way. I have found names of Sega/Gremlin people like Larry Clague, Time Skelly and Mike Hendricks but they don't seem to have any connection to Zaxxon.

The arcade manual http://www.arcadedocs.com/vidmanuals/Z/Zaxxon.pdf mentions it being manufactured by Gremlin in San Diego but still doesn't prove it was developed there as Frogger(which was certainly developed in Japan by Konami) says the same thing on the Sega/Gremlin version.

Any help would be appreciated.

I'm going to guess that it was developed in the US, because Sega founder Dave Rosen is the one who came up with the name for it.

(But then again, Dave Rosen founded the company in Japan...)

Interesting. Rosen lived in Japan so that doesn't really determine the game's origin. Where did you read that Rosen named it?

Out of "High Score" (by Rusel DeMaria and Johnny L. Wilson, p. 232). Rosen said, and I quote:

"I couldn't come up with a name for the game. I wanted something masculine sounding. I put some Zs and Xs on a piece of paper and then just put some vowels between them. That's it."

But yeah, now I'm interested as to where this game originated as well.

Cool, I have that book but I haven't read it in a while.
