Okay, I'm a sucker for puzzle games and so far, my favorite on the NES is Dr. Mario. What other good puzzlers are there for the NES as I always need additions to my list of carts that I'm hunting for? :D

Tengen Tetris, Puzznic, Pipe Dream. I liked Pipe Dream a lot. Then there's stuff like Othello, but that isnt really my thing.

it depends on what kind of puzzle games you like. for games like dr. mario there's... nintendo or tengen tetris, yoshi, tetris 2, and hatris. that's all i can think of. there's other puzzle games that have you moving/pushing around blocks, etc. like adventure of lolo 1-3, castlequest, solomon's key, fire and ice, kickle cubicle, and mendel palace.

It's a tie between Kickle Cubicle and the Lolo series for me.

Yoshi's Cookie is another good one.

I like that one for the GameBoy but have never played it for the NES. :)

I'm a fan of action-puzzlers, and the Lolos are great for that. Of course, I must pay homage to the mightest action puzzler of all time: SOLOMON'S KEY. Simply delicious :-P

The simplest ones still do it for me. It's almost a tie between Tetris and Dr. Mario. Two of the greatest games ever made, as far as I'm concerned.

To add to the list of other games, Wario's Woods hasn't been mentioned yet.

I love puzzle games, especially those on the NES. My two favorites (listed above) are Solomon's Key and Puzznic.

Both titles are endless fun, especially Puzznic which has two full games in one cart (Puzznic and Gravnic).

I LOVE Dr. Mario. Most addictive game ever created!!! I have gotten pretty good at it lately, but does anyone have any tips or stratagies? I usually play vertically, unless I see something horizontally that I can easialy take out.

I agree about it being addictive. :D These are probably pretty obvious but clear the top first and if you have to let pills fall to the bottom, look to set up horizontal groups for elimination there. Also, when using a pill to eliminate a group, pay attention to the "unused" end and make sure that you drop it in a manner where it matches up with something. I work mainly with verticals as well but to beat it, you have to figure out use of horizontals too. I've made it to Level 21 (or possibly higher..can't remember) on both the NES and GB version so I must be doing something right! ;)

Another one that hasn't been mentioned yet is Krazy Kreatures. I had the faintest memory of that game from a friend's house when i was either 5 or 6. It was the first NES game I'd seen that wasn't gray, which is probably why it stood out.

Playing it now, it's fun for a little bit, but it gets old quick.

Krazy Kreatures is AWESOME! My brother got insanely good at that game, getting to the last level on the hardest difficulty. No human hands can move fast enough to beat that level though. I believe the ending for it said something about the player cheating if they made it that far.....my brother was literally about 2 moves away from making it.

For adventure/puzzle games, you can't beat Solstice, the Shadowgate-type games and Princess Tomato.

Thanks for the tips. I have become pretty good at the game. I can beat level 20 around 75% of the time, and have made it to level 23 (but I got nervous and died LOL).
The reason I ask for tips is because I saw a video of some guy online DOMINATING Dr. Mario!!! He played totally horizontally, and was playing level 20 on fast (I play on normal). He was seroiusly owning the game!!! Made it look too easy. If anyone can find the vid, please post it.

I always wished Boxxle had been released in the US for the NES. The closest thing is the game Porter on the Caltron/Myriad 6in1 cart. I had played this cart in the early 90's after renting it and enjoyed the game and it wasn't until nearly 10 years later I finally tracked down a copy and got to beat the game.

I just wanted to say that I finally beat Dr. Mario. Well... I beat level 24, and it just starts over at level 24 again. I am kinda disapointed that there isnt a ending screen like usual.

Domestic I would go with Tengen Tetris. Import (and on most multi-carts) without a doubt "Flipull". If you haven't played Flipull yet, then you must as it is addictive as hell!

It does. You get to watch the virus' get sucked away from some alien spacecraft (dont ask me, I just report 'em as I see 'em)

Well, I might be the only one, but I'm going to mention Q*Bert anyway. \m/

Most annoying controls....ever

My top 5
1. Tetris Attack
2. Solomon's Key
3. Tengen Tetris
4. Kirby's Avalanche
5. Boxy Boy (..at least I think that's the one)

While not my favorite genre, puzzle games can be really addicting. Dr. Mario is probably my favorite of all time. I was absolutely hooked on it, so I knew the only way to quell my addiction was to beat it on level 20 on high speed. Mission accomplished, BTW. :D

And yet I keep coming back to it! Dr. Mario rules, that is the truth.

I've only played it on the GameBoy and I'll agree, it is addictive. I'll have to look for an NES Multi-cart with it!! :D

I had a roommate long ago who became hooked on this game for a month or two. He did eventually beat the final level, but it took something like an hour to finish. It was a pretty good accomplishment; too bad about the lack of any ending sequence. I'd like to see one where Mario overdoses and goes out like Bon Scott, with Peach as the hysterical groupie.

Two great games not mentioned yet.. Moai Kun and Egypt. Both not released in the states, but both really good addictive games. Though for the life of me, Egypt never seems to end. It has a story line, so I assume it ends eventually, but it's a lot of puzzle.

Best ones:

Fire n' Ice
Solomon's Key
Puzznic
Qix
all Lolo's
Clu clu land
Arkanoid w/ vaus controller

Flipull is like God. I've only played it on GB too though. If you guys are addicted to solomon's key, try it on GB... The levels are in a different order and I think it's even harder on GB.

I missed this thread the first time around, but that was the first thing that came to my mind. I can't believe it took 24 days for someone to mention the Lolo series!

Krazy Kreatures is Kool too. :)

Yeah, I'll third Yoshi's Cookie. It's like Panel de Pon with no enhancements.

Tetris 2 is garbage.

My favorites:

Tetris
Tengen Tetris
Dr. Mario
Yoshi's Cookie
Klax

BTW, somebody mention Kirby's Avalanche above...that wasn't released for the NES...was it?

Nope, just on the SNES.

Also, the SNES version of Wario's Woods blows the NES version out of the water.

First of all if you are a fan of the tetris games you have to try Pyramids!!! Easily the most chalanging of these types of games!!!
Castle quest is the puzzle adventure game that i always go back to (still cant beat that game no matter what i try...)
And if you want frantic arcade puzzle action at its best try Trolls on Treasure Island - 2 player is just nuts...

Much love for the Lolos, the 2nd one being the rarest of the 3 carts. Also enjoyed Solomon's Key, one of my first NES games purchased back in '88.

@ MrSparkle - The Tengen version has 2 player vs. and co-op modes with/against another player or computer and selectable handicaps for either side.

whats different about tengens tetris?

Retrogaming Times Monthly issue #11 (http://my.stratos.net/%7Ehewston95/RTM11/RTM11.html) - I covered it back in April 2005 in my "Titles of Tengen" column. Basically the Tengen version is a port of the Atari Games arcade Tetris. The licensed NES version of Tetris is Nintendo's own build based mostly on an original rework of the PC version, same with the Game Boy version. The Famicom version of Tetris is mostly based on the PC version.

My vote for best NES puzzle game goes to Palamedes (http://www.digitpress.com/DP/cmf/game.cmf?gameid=6476).

I finally bought Dr. Mario for the NES a few days ago. I have only played it briefly a couple of times in the past (quite recently) and I liked it a lot. So, I decided to finally find it for sale online, and I was surprised as to how cheap people were selling it. I bought it for $4 (plus $3 shipping) on amazon.com. It came in yesterday, finally, and man is it awesome:hail:
