OK, there is a Playstation controler for $20 out at some junk store. it is built more like a Dremcast controller and it has a rubber ball of some sort on the left hand side where L1 and L2 should be. However L1 and L2 were moved over nearby X, In Dreamcast 6-Button controller fashion. It's been at the store for years.
Was this some crazy sort of mod, Or was it really marketed?

Yes! I remember seeing this in game magazines - for a short time.
Here's a link to a review with a pic:

If you search "ASCII Sphere PSX" you'll get a fair number of hits. The consensus appears to be the same about it's playability: not good.
If you like driving games, it might be worth a shot, but I'd reccommend it more if you just like Hideous Mutant Freak controllers.
Good luck!

Forsaken and MDK are the only games that were specifically written to take advantage of the controller.
Today's trivia was brought to you by the letter "J."

Great trivia! Well, if there were ever two games that needed a gimpy controller to push them past "cruddy" into "unplayability", it was probably Forsaken and MDK. Yikes!
I still love that girl in the Forsaken art, though...she's just awfully cheesey....

The guy who is selling this is VERY Unreliable, he prices things too high, And lies about testing them himself. $25 for a genesis that won't turn on? No thanks.

I have one of those controllers for PC. They're a pain in the ass. They're actually also designed to be used with Descent ;)
Work great for the 3 games they were designed for....shit for everything else, and weird to hold too.

I thought of getting one quite some time ago. I'll probably snag one if I see it used at a good price. Kinda like the blue Alps batarang-lookin' controller. Wasn't worth the $30 to me new, but it was cool used for $3.

Also... Anyone remember the ASCII one handed controller? I think they marketed it to be used with RPGs.

Anyway. If anyone has an extra Sphere controller. I would be willing to buy or trade for it.

I always wished I could use that one-handed controller to play Shining Force. That's about the only comfortably one-handed game I can think of....but it's not on the PS.

You can play Suikoden 1 and 2 with mostly just your left hand on a normal PS controller. They rigged it so the L1 and L2 buttons do most of the functions :)
