"Collector’s item?

Apparently SpikeOut: Battle Street will be released in very limited quantities and will be exclusively available via EBGames. We’ve heard that most stores will only receive TWO copies which will immediately make the game a collector’s item. The total run of the game will only be approximately 3,600 copies. Sega lovers better be on the lookout come March 29th or you might be S.O.L."

3600 copy print run? :hmm:

thanks for the tip.i was gonna wait for the game to go dirt cheap ,but being the sega nut that i am,and how low the copy count is,i will be grabbing that game right away now.

"This is like Double Dragon for the current generation of gaming consoles, but with 4 player online play!"

Sold American here. :D

I can't see them only printing 3,600, I think they are missing a couple zero's atleast.

They pulled this same crap with Dragon Ball Z Budokai as well, anyone remember that?

An EB associate told me the game was getting a very limited print run, that only EB would be getting it, and it would only recieve the amount that was pre-ordered. Hell, they even had a sign stating this that was sent out by Bandai themselves.

...now it's a Greatest Hits title.

I'm calling BS for the time being. But still pre-ordering JUST IN CASE. LOL

With a print run that small, can you imagine how hard it'll be trying to find people to play with on Live??? Why even bother with Live support?

I'm with Cmosfm. I call bullshit.

No kidding. That would completely ruin the potential of this game. If it's not bullshit, it's a bullshit decision.

The math per store doesent even add up. EB opened 100 locations in the 1st quarter of 2004, and projected opening 400 NEW locations by the end of the year.

source:
http://www.gamesindustry.biz/content_page.php?section_name=ret&aid=3500

That would account for 8000 copies alone. Let's say only 50% of the NEW stores got copies, that's still 4000. And unrealistic.

Definitely not an accurate number.

i guess for $30 at the fact that i do want the game its worth the hassle of the preorder. However i am waving my bullshit flag as well.

i really dont want to spend $30 on something im not gonna play and would def. pick this up if i knew this # was true....but, like everyone else said and with the points about live support and what not, im gonna say bullshit too

Low press run or not, I'm glad I got alerted to this. Combining my favorite genre with a publisher that I trust with 99% of their games, and I finally have something to spend some of my EB credit on!

I'll be preordering this one very soon!

Ouch, looks like this is a busy month for Xbox releases, I have enough EB store credit to buy Super Monkey Ball Delux, Mega Man x Ann, and Woorms Forts, which of the above 3 would be most available? I plan to let go one game and make room for SpikeOut in this case then.

Well, it certainly doesn't look like it's going to be an EB Games exclusive;

http://www.estarland.com/index.asp?page=XBox&cat=AA&product=22344&q

Plus, estarland.com has it for $2.00 cheaper than EB Games does.

I think I'll pick this up anyway, since I really like games styled after Final Fight, Double Dragon and Streets Of Rage.

...and Sam Goody has it listed for $26.99:

Doesn't look like this game is going to be as rare as it's hyped to be but I guess that is a good thing if I expect to play with anyone on Live. It looks pretty fun though, so I'll definitely be picking up a copy anyway.

Oh, I'm getting all over this not because of the limited number of copies, but because I love Beat 'em ups.

Even very crappy ones. I even liked Fighting Force @_@

Well even if it's not a rare game, I still preordered it

It's hopefully a great game.

Does anyone else think this Spikeout rarity business is just a bunch of crap?

I could probably get 3 really good games for $10 each instead of this one game for $30, and I'm considering doing just that. I put down a pre-order at EB a couple of weeks ago, but honestly I don't even remember when it's coming out...

I don't know if the rarity is crap or not, but man... If it is a halfway decent beat-em-up, it is worth FAR more than $30.00 to me. And that is coming from a guy who it pains to buy games that are more than $20.00!

EB just called me and told me the game is in. I love the area EB. The guy told me, "I didn't think anyone else knew about this game! It looks like it rocks!" and I plan on picking it up tonight. I'll post a bit of thoughts on it if I get any time to play it tonight.

I don't believe the number indicated earlier, I just picked up mine today, my local EB has 4 copies, 3 to fill preorders including mine and the other goes on sale, I've yet to try out this game.

All right. Here is the quick review after 15 minutes of play...

It is basically either Maximum Carnage or Streets of Rage in a beautiful 3D setting. The control is on, and the game is easy to get into, although I haven't yet figured out how to pick up weapons.

As for the rarity, mine was the only copy that EB got. The guy that was there thought it looked awesome, so I was told that he spent all day calling all of the other EBs in the area to see where he could get it and no one has it or is charted to get it soon. Who knows?

All that I know is that it is awesome :)

Down+X+Y simultaneously picks up weapons...a bit awkward, but not too hard to get the hang of.

I think my EB got two copies in, both preorders...I actually was hoping it was going to be released next week to space things out, what with the PSP today and all.

All right -- a little more of a review for those who were wondering:

I haven't played the game with the sound up, so I don't know what the sound is like. But I can say for sure that it does almost everything that I was disappointed with about Turtles right.

First off, the enemies actually pop out of places. Yes, it makes as little sense as it did back in the days of TMNT when endless enemies would shimmy down flagpoles, but I like the fact that don't just materialize. Mostly, they are jumping out of trucks or whatever.

The fighting is really simple, but yet not. You have two main fight buttons, and one "power-up" button. Punching happens the fastest, but is the least powerful. Kicking is slower but more powerful, but it is slower and opens yourself to more other attacks and your power punch is good, but while you power it up you move slower, again opening yourself to attacks.

You can somehow pick up weapons and use them. I have yet to figure that out. You also have a special move, but I don't know how to use those either. I haven't read the manual or gone through training, but I'm sure once I do I'll be better.

There is a jump button and a block button also, it seems. Very simple, but yet exactly what is needed for a game like this.

The boss battles are awesome - just like the boss battles of old! In fact, after you have defeated enough of the baddies to get to the boss, the game makes the statement in the middle of the screen, "HERE COMES THE BOSS!" It's great.

The bosses that I have seen so far are just like the bosses of older games. They all are powerful, but if you can find their weakness you can exploit it. There is one with a flamethower for instance, and if you can avoid the flames, after he starts blowing them at you he doesn't turn, so you can quickly sneak behind him and punch him there.

The graphics are amazing in places, and dull in others. There were a few places I felt like I was looking at pictures of a wall instead of a polygonal one. In other places, I wondered why they made it so bland.

Overall though, for the current-gen game I paid the most for, it's great. I am happy that I paid $30.00 for it, and I would definitely suggest a pickup for anyone that likes old-school beat-em-ups. Thanks again to everyone here for turning me on to the fact this game was coming out -- it is probably my favorite genre, and this game is going to be a favorite for a long time, easily booting Turtles and Batman: Sin Tzu out.

This game is complete crap. Any beat-em-up where you can't pick up the weapons easily is garbage, IMO. Whoever heard of pressing two buttons to pick up a weapon? The manual says you should hold down on the left thumbsticks and press Y, but even that's wrong.

The graphics look decent, and the game has the arcade-style feel, but compared to other Xbox games, Spikeout is sorely lacking...

I haven't been able to get a copy in my area, guess I should have pre-ordered. Anyway the guy at Eb said that they should be getting more in soon and that the game will start shipping to different chains sometime in April, I guess Eb had a limited exclusivity deal.

I actually like the fact it takes two buttons to pick up a weapon...I've had my share of game experiences where I accidentally picked up a weapon when I was trying to punch some fool, and the delay for picking it up got me kicked in the head or something like that.

Once I figured out what the buttons were, it was no problem at all to grab them.

I agree completely. I always hated in Double Dragon when you would knock a weapon out of someone's hands only to keep attempting to grab them while people hit you.

I really like this game, an after I get done with a few more games in my MLB 2K5 season, I'll be all over it :)
