For the past year or so I've been collecting 2D Playstation games. Unfortunately, it's hard to collect them when there is no definitive list to work from. I've slowly been compiling a list with the help of OPCFG (http://www.geocities.com/opcfg/main.html) and my own personal experience and research but I'm going to need your help to finally pull this together. So far I have 164 titles which I have I'm sure I'm still missing some, and there may even be some that don't belong here, but it's a start. One thing you may notice is that I have included several 3D remakes of classic games, and that is because they all include a "classic" mode (sometimes hidden) that is in 2D. Behold the list:

Are you accepting Japanese games for your list?

EDIT: Ok how about I go read the title again ... sorry.

Dance Dance Revolution
Dance Dance Revolution Konamix

And how about the Loaded games? Think those count?

Cirrus
03-08-2005, 02:06 PM
How about Alundra?

Also, I'm pretty sure Dragon Warrior 7 isn't 2D. Maybe during the battles, but it's got plenty of 3d elements...

If you have Command & Conquer you might want to add Civilization II.

Fighters:

Samurai Shodown III: Blades of Blood
Samurai Shodown Warrior's Rage

SHMUPS:

R-Types
R-Type Delta

And if you open it up to Jap games I'll send you a couple dozen more shmups. ;)

Eternal Eyes - 2D sprites on 3D backgrounds. (like grandia)
Tales of Destiny 2
Brigandine: The Legend of Forsena
Persona
Persona 2: Eternal Punishment
Rhapsody: A Musical Adventure
Hoshigami: Ruining Blue Earth
Wild Arms
Wild Arms 2 (I think... actually not sure)
Thousand Arms (2D battle sequences and dating scenes)
Azure Dreams (2D sprites on 3D backgrounds)
Xenogears (2D sprites on 3D backgrounds)
Alundra

Then there's a lot of games that use 3D models on prerendered 2D backgrounds like all the main Final Fantasy titles. Do those count?

Cirrus: DW7 is 2D sprites on 3D backgrounds. It's a hybrid like most of the PSX titles.

Cirrus

Right, I'm seeing that a lot of the titles you mentioned are the same way.

I don't really consider these to be real 2d games, such as metal slug, etc...

How about Heart Of Darkness? I believe there is a thread somewhere on the Roundtable with a mini-review/reccomendation. From what I've played so far, I'd reccomend it as well.

OK, I clearly need to narrow my definition of 2D. :) As Daria mentioned, DW7 and several other RPGs use 2D sprites on 3D backgrounds. Should these be included or not? Personally I'm leaning towards not, but I want this to be "our" list so I'll go with the general DP consensus.

Dance Dance Revolution
Dance Dance Revolution Konamix
I had left these out because the graphics are 3D and the gameplay is too abstract to really be classified as anything-D. Know what I mean?

Samurai Shodown III: Blades of Blood
Samurai Shodown Warrior's Rage
Aren't those the same game? I had left it out because it uses polygonal graphics, but is it a 2D fighter? This brings up a similar question to the one above, should games with 3D graphics but 2D gameplay be included? If not, that would rule out a lot of platformers such as Klonoa, Pandemonium, etc.

Daria

I'd just break them up into catagories. 2D titles, 2D on 3D, and 3D on 2D. That way the titles don't get mixed together but you still got a good idea of what's available.

No, they're not. Samurai Shodown III = 2D fighter, while Warrior's Rage = 3D fighter. Include SSIII, but not SS:WR. *Crawls back into Neo Geo hole*

Good idea! Done. :)

Are you sure about Wild Arms though? You mentioned you weren't sure about Wild Arms 2, but I'm not certain either of them are 2D.

In pure 2d, you dont have GTA: London, while usually bundled with GTA1, it isn't always.

In '3d with 2d gameplay' you should add Parappa The Rappa, and Um Jammer Lammy

Johhny Bazookatone is 3D with 2D gameplay.

I'm positive about Wild Arms. Everything except the battle sequances look like a very well done snes title (think Tales of Phantasia). The battles however are piss poor quality 3D. Looks really weird together.

I am not understanding...I considered Klonoa and Pandimonium 2d games on a 3d backround. The character seems to be on a 2d plane while the backround seems to move in a 3d fashion. Also R-Type Delta and Einhander would fall into this also. OH and Raystorm and Ray Crisis too?

I considered games like Dragon Warrior VII and Xenogears to be 3d but then there are parts where classic 2d rpg gameplay comes in

Doh its soo confusing...

fantastic idea, i always wanted to do this for the 3D systems (psx, n64, dc, gc, xbox, ps2)

what about Mickeys Wild Adventures (remake of Mickey Mania for SNES) and Lost Vikings II, i know both were releases in Europe, no idea about the US

Cirrus
03-08-2005, 06:11 PM
The Persona games, aren't those 2d on 3d? Or am I not remembering correctly...?

Also, Star Ocean 2 is 2d on 3d for the fights, definitely. Also, 3d on the maps, and while flying...

Space Invaders (PSX) has a port of the original Space Invaders (Arcade) game, in all of its exclusively 2D glory. I notice that you have it in the "3D games with 2D gameplay" list, but I wasn't sure whether you'd want to also include it in the straight-up 2D game list.

Check out the OPCFG link in my first post! It has lists for all those systems, I just decided to start my own Playstation list since their list is missing a bunch of games and doesn't distinguish between US vs. non-US or 2D graphics vs. gameplay.

Mickey's Wild Adventure was not released in the US; Lost Vikings II was released as Norse by Norsewest (which is already in the list).

Leaving my Playstation semi-dormant for a few months, I "rediscovered" it after picking up In the Hunt last weekend and after seeing this thread, I'll be hunting down some of those tasty titles you have on that list (well, that and I only have 38 PS1 titles, & mostly RPG's at that). Thanks for the inspiration, Kier.

Nice idea! Add these to the Pure 2D list:

Sheep
Turnabout

Discworld Noir was released on the PSX in the US, wasn't it? And what about Devil Dice? (And is Pong: The Next Level really that 2D?)

If you're going to include Pro Pinball: Big Race USA, I imagine there are a lot of other pinball games you'd have to include. (Pro Pinball: Timeshock comes to mind.)

How 'bout Wild 9?Just played it last night and it definitely falls into the category of 3D graphics with 2D gameplay. Fun game too! I wasn't expecting much, but I really like how you have to use your enemies to get past certain obstacles.

Discworld Noir was released on the PSX in the US, wasn't it? And what about Devil Dice? (And is Pong: The Next Level really that 2D?)I'm pretty sure Discworld Noir had a US release on the PC, but was only released in Europe for the Playstation. Devil Dice I believe is fully 3D. Pong is included because it includes the original 2D pong in all its black&white glory. I've added some comments to the list to clarify this wherever it applies.

If you're going to include Pro Pinball: Big Race USA, I imagine there are a lot of other pinball games you'd have to include. (Pro Pinball: Timeshock comes to mind.)Hmmm.... I'm not sure those belong there. I think I had read that Pro Pinball: Big Race USA used 2D graphics, but I'm going to remove it until I get a chance to play it or someone can confirm it for me.

Devil Dice I believe is fully 3D.

Well, you really only move in two dimensions, right? It's at least as 2D as Q*Bert.

Why do you have Shooter: Space Shot listed but not Shooter: Starfighter Sanvein?

Why do you have Shooter: Space Shot listed but not Shooter: Starfighter Sanvein?
Because Space Shot is a side-scrolling shooter and Starfighter Sanvein, well, isn't. :hmm:

Space Shot does belong in the 3rd list however, and not the first (I'm sure there are others misplaced as well since I started with just one big list).

Shouldn't Theme Park, Civilization II, Tecmo Super Bowl, and NBA Jam TE be on this list. Also I am sure there are some other 2D sports games that came out for Playstation.

Was reading this list again and I realized that even if you just had the 2D games, the PSX would be best 32bit system in history.

Nice list.

But I think you should rename it to be 2D and sprite based titles for the PS, you know?

Yes, sprite based.
