"Optical Drive - As many have speculated, Xenon will not use Blu-Ray or HD-DVD. Games will come on dual-layer DVD-9 discs. While the media is the same as that of the current Xbox, the usable space on each disc is up to 7 GB. The drive is slated to run at 12X."

good. helps keep the costs down.

"Microsoft is requiring developers to make all Xenon titles Live enabled."

Sweet.

"Developers are being instructed to plan their games for high-definition. The baseline is 720p at 1280x720 for gameplay and video clips, 16:9 aspect ratio, 5.1 Surround Sound, and anti-aliasing. These features are the current minimum requirement."

Double sweet.

"All Xenon games can be played using custom soundtracks."

Triple sweet. Sounds like they're making some pretty solid choices.

If this is real, VERY nice information and a real boost for buying this when it comes out. Microsoft is taking the lessons they learned from the XBox and applying it.

You know, I think MS is stupid for not including backward compatibility at all costs. The early success of GBA and PS2 is directly related backward compatibility IMHO. I understand that it would be tough considering they are using a new GPU manu (rather than NVidia, who wouldn't be bullied by MS or bullied MS, and made the Xbox GPU.) From what I've heard it WON'T be backward compatible.

Oh, and BTW the most important thing probably isn't 'when will Xbox 2 come out?,' rather it will be, 'when will Halo 3 come out?'

Those specs are a lot better than some PCs.

It really looks like Gamespy pulled it out of their ass.

Eh, I'll be impressed if those are actually the specs, but I highly doubt it.

It's all hype.

Raymond is such a douche. My ribs ache anytime i've heard his voice or read his words. Gamespy sucks. Xbox 2 is going to be fuckin hot though. I wonder, if X2 does end up beating Sony and Nintendo will we see a greater shift of Microsoft hatred on this board? Survey says: YES!

THE ONE, THE ONLY- RCM

Camera - Xenon will have a USB 2.0 camera. It's capable of 1.2 megapixel still shots and VGA video. Photos can be used in-game and for gamer profiles. The camera can also be used for video chat. It's unknown if the Xenon camera will allow for EyeToy-like gameplay. Developers are currently using a simulated camera driver.

Sweet! i would'nt really care wether or not it's backwards compatible, since i've already got an XBox, but it would be sweet.

BTW, Everybody loves raymond!

the rumors about Xbox 2 is a tough pill for me to swallow, and I have become a HUGE Xbox fan with all of their support as of late. It would be sad for the company to NOT HAVE A FING CLUE and make thier new system non backwards compatable. The specs are nice, I am sure it can push some mean graphics.....but cmon it is a no brainer. Hardcore fans will support it, but then agian, hardcore fans dont carry a system...ask Sega about thier Dreamcast!

the bottom line: No backwards compatability and the public with revolt. It is not about how often people will actually use the backwards compatable unit, it is the ability to be able to play Xbox games that will sell.

Microsoft figure it out, it is not that difficult! :?

Incorrect. Backwards compatability is aimed strictly at the hardcore. You think 95% of the people who own a PS2 give a shit about it playing PSOne games? The mainstream rules the market now and the mainstream wants the biggest and the best. Last generation, as much as I love backwards compatability (and updated ports of classics), is old hat to the public.

The Xbox2 MIGHT fall into a different category strictly because of Halo 2 and it's ginormous online following. There's a good chance a large portion of the people who currently support the Xbox won't be supporting the Xbox 2/Xenon/Xbox Next until Halo 3 is released. Or they'll be early adopters if it IS backwards compatible with the promise of a new live map or two.

All I know is that there seems to be a huge swing in the common gamer choosing Xboxes lately. Call it whatever reason you want, but the Xbox seems to be winning many over. Anywhere I go lately there are no Xboxes in stock and the games are always picked over while the PS2 and Cube sections are available. I bought my second XboX last week and had to travel around considerably to find one.

IMO it's the draw of Live that will sell XboX 2 rather than backwards compatiblity. Live is like crack to many people and Microsoft knows it. I mentioned to our 19 year old Halo freak that there was an tiny article on Halo 3 on the net and you could practically hear him standing there jizzing himself in anticipation. Mention Halo 3 and they've got him and his buddies sold, no matter the cost.

I really don't understand it, although I have to admit I've never used Xbox live. Online gaming for the PS2 is FREE, which is why I've gravitated toward it.

Looks like the next generation of games will definitely be online oriented.

Well if the GPU really is a generation beyond the Radeon X800 then I wanna know how much this system is gonna cost. Doesn't the Radeon 800XT still cost $500? It sounds like this system will be expensive as hell. Kudos to MS for giving Nvidia the boot though. I'd rather have ATI over Nvidia any day. Not that I'll be buying one of these systems, but it's the principle of it all. I would like to know when I can get a card with that GPU in my PC though!

It'll be $300. If it isn't, it'll fail. There's no argument about that, so we can HOPE that they stay within the market price... maybe $350 for the HD edition.

Notes:
1) I wasn't all that big on xbox live. Whoopity shit on that. I'm more so afraid of games being online only...
2) Yes, no backwards compatibility is BAD. BAD BAD BAD. However, I have one question.
How many of you that are howling about xbox 2's lack, also howl about the fact that nintendo has no backwards compatibility?
Or that unless i've lost my mind, only other console(not portable...) To have out of the box backwards compatibility with the previous system was the Atari 7800? Ok, so Atari 8 bit computers also technically had it. Outside of game boy, nintendo has never done it! (yes, I know. they were supposed to, hence why super 8 adaptors work on snes; they never removed the damn crystals.)
Sega never did it!
Yes, I like the backwards compatibility of PS2. I'd never have bothered with psx otherwise, most likely, as I think none too highly of psx.
That being said, it's pretty damn hard to include backwards compatibility, especially in this case. would I like it? yes. Is it the end of the world? no.

Indeed. XBox Live ROCKS. Yes, you pay for it, but the money is used to to give a better gaming service.

I really love signing on to a EA sports game and going into their lobby and seeing updated sports scores scroll across the ticker on the bottom of the screen.

We don't know if these are final specs or how confirmed that it is, but there are things here that make perfect sence for a next generation console. Espeicly the HD-TV and 5.1 speaker surrond sound support being included in ALL games. (FINALLY!)[/i]
