I think that Gran Turismo 3 allows you to link three PS2s via iLink (aka FireWire aka IEEE 1394) cables meeting in a FireWire hub, and so you could have three-way full screen multiplayer. And I thought that I had read that Unreal Tournament for PS2 allowed the same thing to be done with four players.

EDIT: From Gamespy:

4 Player iLink
Oh! So that's why Infogrames mentions the ability to hook up "3 and 4 consoles". But wait, the game only allows two players using two consoles hooked up through an iLink cable, what do I do?

Never fear, IGN is here with the answer.

First you'll need , at least, a 4 point fire-wire hub (you can buy these at any computer part store).

Secondly, you'll need three other friends their iLink cables and (of course) their playstations.

Now, hook them all together using you iLink cable and your Fire-wire hub.

Lastly you'll need the Cheat Code.

Start a 2-person multiplayer game.

Press Start to Pause the Game.

Enter the following code:

LEFT, CIRCLE, LEFT, RIGHT, SQUARE, RIGHT.

Your screen will say "Waiting For Other Players".

The other three players should hit the start button and join in.

ENJOY!!!

Am I right about those? If so, are there other PS2 games that allow system linking via a hub for three or more systems?

Also, I thought I had heard that you could link four Xboxes through a router and so play Halo (and Halo 2?) with up to 16 players. Is this sort of thing common with Xbox games?

And what about GCN?

(Of course, it won't be practical, for me at least, to get these sorts of things set up until the next generation of consoles arrives and the current gen consoles go through a few price drops. But one can dream...)

That is correct.

The Xbox is the most system-link friendly console yet. Some games allow for only 2 systems to be linked, and some games allow for up to 16 consoles to be linked together. I have no idea how many games support it, I would say it's well beyond 40+ games. All you really need is a hub/router and some lan cables. If you want to connect only 2 consoles you can use the hub/router setup, or connect the 2 systems directly to each other using a crossover cable (or the Xbox system link cable).

Xbox System link cables I can name off the top of my head:
-Crimson Skies (2-16)
-Halo (2-4)
-Halo 2 (2-16)
-MechAssault (2-4)
-MechAssault 2 (2-12)
-Moto GP 2 (2-16)
-Outrun 2 (2-8)
-Rallisport 2 (2-16)
-Return to Castle Wolfenstein
-Sega GT Online
-Star Wars Battlefront (2-10)
-Time Splitters 2
-Top Spin
-Unreal Championship (1-4)
-Unreal Championship 2 (2-8)
-Worms 3D (2-10)

It's lots of fun, the next best thing to Live, and it's pretty painless to set up. The PS2 stuff is a lot more work, although newer games support system link play through the online adapter and normal lan cables.

To my knowledge there a no GC games that allow for system link.

There are actually three GCN games that use system link:
Kirby Air Ride
1080 avalanche
and the big one, Mario Kart Double Dash

Plus using software like warpipe www.warppipe.com and xlink www.teamxlink.co.uk allows for online play.
Fun fun fun!
