View Full Version : Okay, maybe I'm obsessing a teensy little bit . . .

Been playing Shenmue lately. It's given me an idea for an emulation "front end."

For those not familiar: You run around a small town interacting with the citizens and the shops. One of the shops is an arcade. The game takes place in 1986 so the games in the arcade are Hang-On and Space Harrier (also Sega games.) Well, wouldn't it be cool if there were a "front end" that let you walk around (In a year of your choice) and go to Arcades, PC Stores and Video Game shops from the era and purchase/play systems and games which you could take home and play? It would be like a virtual collecting sim. In later years there could be garage sales selling stuff from previous years.

The only way I can imagine doing this would be to use the Unreal or Quake (or Thief or System Shock) construction kits make a little town, make each level a different year in the life of that town and then SOMEHOW (here's where I haven't a clue) connect the environment to existing emulators which would run the game you'd be playing.

Is this a fun idea or am I crossing the line into obsessive compulsion again?

Funny you said that. I remember hitting an emulation website along while back that used this 3-d world technology to walk into virtual arcades and play Java arcade emulators. I wish I still knew that url. I'll look around...

Here's a front end for MAME similar to what I spoke of.

I also learned of something called Virtual Arcade 1.0, which is probably what Zektor was referring to, but it seems to have been replaced by a nasty casino site that takes over your screen if you try to leave it.

I believe that is what it was called. What a shame it isn't around anymore..
