looking at the unit itself, the sega cd is placed on the right and the 32x on the left. Do you need to remove the 32x to play genesis games?

Nope.
You just plug them into the 32x also. There are a few games that will not work though. Like virtua racing. And one hidden benefit of the 32x is that most megadrive carts will actually fit so you don't need an adapter.

Virtua Racing is the only Genesis game I know of that won't work with the 32X. But it still works great with the Nomad, so that's why I keep it, even though I also own Virtua Racing for the 32X, which is way better. I own Virtua Racing for the Saturn also, but I still love the Genesis version, just for the fact that it's so different from any other Genesis game. I wish that they had made at least a few more SVP chip games besides just that one though.

Same with the Genesis model 3. The slot is wide enough for any cart.
