Thought I'd show everyone this article if they haven't seen it yet. Later this year is when Nintendo will launch their worldwide WiFi online activity! They also mention probably the best game, next to MarioKart DS, Animal Crossing DS is going to use it too. ABSOLUTLY AWESOME! I am so happy right now! This almost seems to good to be true.
What's everyone's thought about the wireless network up and running in a few months for the DS?

So you'll have to be in one of these public "hot spots" with your DS in order to play online? If they could find a way to set it up for home use, that'd be great but I doubt I or 99% of DS owners will ever use these hot spots.

Yeah, I have the same concern.
I want some way to connect the DS wirelessly to my cable modem and router so I can lay in bed and play a game of Mario Kart DS with someone across the nation through the Internet. :/

Tomorrow is luanch day for the DS here in Europe and I was seriously hesitant to pick one up (only Super Mario 64 worth playing) but this changed my mind. Mario Kart and Animal Crossing on-line....holy crap.

It says universal hotspots, so it would thus include hotspots for computers. Thus, tif you have a wireless home network, you should be able to play from the comfort of your favorite chair. (In my case, the toilet) LOL

Humanoid Just beat me to this. Regardless I am very excited. I now have a good reason to not sell my DS.
If I am not mistaken all a wi fi hot spot is is any place with wireless connectivity. If you have a wireless router your house is a hot spot. A lot of buisnesses have them and most are not secure. I find that most Kroger ( A grocery store in my area )stores are hot spots. And if you walk down town Cincinnati with a lap top you can go just about anywhere jumping from one buisnesses network to another.

Oh, so you might have to have a wireless internet connection somewhere in your house?

My guess is that you'll be able to access the network through your own wireless routers.
The 'hotspots' will be special places set up by Nintendo for people to play at too. I'm guessing these could be the Kiosks that Nintendo has been playing with in Japan that offer game demos when you get close. Put one of those in a mall or something, and people could get "special" content from them that wasn't otherwise available.
Sounds pretty cool though. Animal Crossing is the GameCube game that I felt most definitely stoods to benefit by being an online capable game. Putting it online with the DS is a very interesting idea, and perhaps the hot spots would be places where you could purchase certain items exclusively. That would be pretty cool.

Yes, probably the TWO top games OVERALL I would have LOVED to see online for Nintendo GC. (And supersmash Brothers)
All I can say is Holy Shit! I can't wait.

Finally when this all kicks off we can DP specific Mariokart races, metroid battles, animal crossing..uh..tea parties? Whatever! It will be fun.
I'm actually really psyched for Nintendogs too, but if they take the Welch Corgi out of the US version, I will be PISSED!
It's wonderful news, but we really do need more to chew on than this, a date would be nice...

Ah man, that would be awesome. In my opinion of course, for me there couldn't be a better game to play online than MarioKart! I need some more competition, I tear everyone apart that I play around my parts!

Oh man, were already starting the turtle shell threats? :P
I was semi-excited about the DS launch, but then felt disappointed when I read the reviews. This makes me slightly more enthusiastic...then again, I paid for a GBA a few months before launch, so this may be the sour grapes talking.

If they make it so you can connect through any wireless connection that will be cake.
If it turns out that you'll have to go to designated hotspots it will be another example of Nintendo dropping the ball bigtime.

Yeah me too. At my girlfriends house there is one. But if need be, I will get one for my house too.
I was wondering, if there is only one internet connection at my house, can both me and my brother use it to get online?? (We both have DS's)

Agreed, Animal Crossing is one of my favorite 'Cube games. Hell, I may go out and buy a DS for that game alone.

Wireless routers really aren't all that expensive, guys. I paid $8 for my wireless router and $13 for my wireless NIC card for my PC, and they're both fantastic. Good brand names, too (belkin).

Smash Brothers Melee and (yes, I'll admit it) Pokemon need to go online.
Pokemon's popularity is nothing right now, compared to what it could be if it went online. It was built to go online, because I don't know any little kids with which to play with. And if I go hang out by the middle school, looking for kids with Gameboys, the police I think would get the wrong idea.
And Melee, wow. Online play is practically the only thing keeping Melee from being the greatest fighter of all time.
But enough of this DS crap. I don't like Wario Ware. Gimme online on a console.
And a wireless router? "Hot spots"? Geez, that's too much trouble. I don't actually take my handhelds out of the house, so just give me a wire and let me plug the damn thing into the wall.

Yeah really, welcome to the current state of technology and the homes of most gamers buddy. I don't have one, but I'm sure as hell going to upgrade if need be - and It's not THAT much trouble. This is MarioKart online we're talking about!

At work, we have had up to 10 laptops on a wireless router at the same time with little to no problems... If that's how it works, I'd expect you could hook up 10 DSes through one just fine.

I recommend Linksys. More expensive, but you get a much larger range. My laptop is about 30 ft. away and it works great!

Agreed. Imagine if you could raise a Pokemon, then sell it off (for Pokemon money)... That would be AWESOME! And then there's battling all of the other people, too. The battles in the original Pokemon were sort of easy.

Oh, I would just like to point this out too...
If you live in a large apartment, expect someone around you already has a wireless router and you'll be able to connect for free. I was surprised to bring my work laptop home with me once and as soon as I powered it up, it had a strong signal from someone. People usually don't encrypt them, so going wireless is exceedingly simple :)

I'm excited. I was really upset that the two games I originally wanted for the DS (AX and Mario Kart) were pushed back nearly a year.
Online play would be worth the wait 8-)

There are so many wi-fi hot spots out there, pretty much all Starbucks are a wifi spot alot of other places offer it, and you can look up you area here to see where near you. (starbuck or other)

Most starbucks that I have been to have WiFi run by T-mobil, whenever I have been there with my laptop, the T-mobil service will hijack my home page and ask me to sign up - would the DS be able to bypass this?
Also, how will Nintendo address the issue of things like this (like the homepage hijack) in regards to interfering with the DS's functionality? I hope that this does not open us up to malicious code finding thier way to our DS units... O_O
I don't claim to know much about what is possible in this regard, thinking out loud here...

Yeah. So far Nintendo hasn't even mentioned home networks yet, so I'm not going to get my hopes up. It would be great if they'd support it though because I could care less about playing my DS online in public places, no matter how accessible they are.

Either am I, but if they really did, then THAT would be a Revolution.
Also, I never thought Mario Kart would even make it out within the first 3 quarters of 2005, so I was able to wait. I'm just psyched at all the quality first party games coming this year. Second half or not, it's still great stuff.

Oh good lord yes, I could care less about being able to play my DS at a local Starbucks, Panera Breads, Borders, any big coffee or book shop, T-Mobile locations, etc. I would never go to those places just to play my ds. I want to be able to play at home, let's hope this happens.

Same here!!!! I am so PSYCHED about the nintendo produced games coming this year. I really don't feel like making a list, but I think there is at least like 15-20 games produced by nintendo alone! Geist and LOZ are on top for the GC, and MK and AC DS for the DS.

Well, I just found this from nintendo.com itself:
http://www.nintendo.com/newsarticle?articleid=224957db-253e-4a11-ab11-fe082a64e84f&page=newsmain
Here's the quote:
"Nintendo DS: Iwata announced that the Wi-Fi protocol for Nintendo DS will provide users with a link to other players across the country or around the world. Once the service begins later this year, Nintendo DS users will be able to connect to the service wirelessly at Wi-Fi hot spots, whether they’re at home, in a hotel or at a coffee shop. As one of several Wi-Fi games, Nintendo’s in-house development team is creating a new Animal Crossing game for global Wi-Fi play."
(It says FREE service and can play at home, as long as there is a set up hot spot, so I guess setting one up just consists of having wireless connection to the internet?)
I suggest reading the whole article for some more info that I didn't find in the IGN link I provided on my very first post on this topic.

Well it is official. Nintendo just sold me a DS for my next birthday. I already called my wife and told her what I want.
Animal Crossing online... god I can already feel the addiction growing.
