View Full Version : Should they make more women's sports games?

First, I want to point out that I am indeed a male.

I'm not sure why, but it just dawned on me today that I can only think of one sports game that stars women exclusively (besides volleyball). That being Ace wo Nerae, a tennis game for the Super Famicom. There are probably more out there, but they obviously aren't plentiful.

There are official titles for the PGA and NBA, but none for the LPGA or the WNBA. There are plenty of NCAA sports games for baseball and basketball. Women play these NCAA sports too, but there's never been any game based on them.

Now, obviously men's sports attract more fans than women's sports. This is just a fact, and it'll probably be a very long time before that ever changes. So I understand that men's sports are a bigger "draw," but surely someone must've thought to make some at some point.

So here's my two-part question. Should game companies make more women's sports titles? And would you buy one if they did?

This is assuming of course that you already like sports games in general. Please no responses of "I don't care because I don't like sports games."

Let's say there's a WNBA game. If it played just as good or better than an NBA game, I think I would buy it, personally. It's more about the gameplay for me than anything else. Maybe gender is all just a moot point though. I'm not trying to push an agenda. I'm just curious what other people thought.

(awesome avatar!)

Well, it would be easy. You've got the sports games there already, you'd just need new character models and rule changes where applicable.

But would it sell? Dunno.

OHHHHHH i thought of one!

Rumble Roses! LOL LOL LOL

If Team Ninja decided on creating Dead or Alive: Extreme Street Basketball... sure I'd play it.

For more traditional sports though its all exactly as you said... not many people would buy them. The one and only audience would of course be the female gamer... and I don't know about you, but all my female gamer friends aren't much in to sports games (and I doubt its because there aren't many women's leages to chose). I'm sure it wouldn't be hard for a company like EA to just remodel their NBA Live or FIFA games for the Women's leagues... just a new character models / teams / courts and some new physics. But its still precious development time that they could use to be making the NEXT NBA or FIFA game.

*sorry* I'm not much of a sports gamer... But I would like to see them release Women's sports games., I do see some market for them especially for the Ever growing popularity of the PC format for female gamers. Simply because it would give some diversity to an overcrowded "genre" I just don't see it happening any time soon... maybe in 5 years.

If they made an NCAA women's basketball game I would buy it. That is mainly because I am from TN and am a huge Lady Vols fan. That being said I do believe the lady vols have a bigger following than the men. Simply because we've always hada great women's basketball team and our mens team has always been somewhat lackluster ... although we beat arkansas tonight ... sweet!

No.

Not unless they want to lose money, they are already trying to force women's sports down our throats as pro sports, the WNBA champs would get whopped by a good High School Boys basketball team, they are hardly pros, and they are hardly worth much attention.

Ah, a fellow Vols fan. :D I'm more football, but I follow the men's and women's basketball teams as well.

Yes, I think women would play ANY game that was geared to them, not just sports, if the game is FUN.

the vols get tremendous support around here .... the mens basketball would too if they ever gave half a reason too.

nothing tops the footballl though ... and every team we play is gauranteed to hear rocky top at least 50 times ... even if we lose by 100 points.

I'm going to be attending UIUC this fall which has the FIGHTING ILLINI WAHOO. Anyways back to the topic. The reason not many female sports games are released, and when they are they're sexah female sports games is because, honestly, female sports games won't sell as well due to less people being fans of female sports, and the sexahness is the reason the ones that are made sell. If it was a decent game I may purchase a serious female sports games. I don't think more should be made, as there obviously isn't a market.

Heh, my parents moved to Knoxville some years ago. I know ALL about the fan support down there. :) That's when I converted under threat of death. :D

But I have to agree, I'd play a woman's basketball game -- either NCAA or WNBA. I'd play women's volleyball and hockey as well. I just don't think I could pick up a softball game, though. :)

Of course the men sports gamers are most popular. Because there AREN'T any women's sports games.

Besides, when did the people of DP decide which games are good based on popularity? I like my fun obscurities.

They'd sell better than men's soccer games in the US, yet they still make those.

Christ, you guys really think that women's sports must include half-naked women in order to be worth it?

Pro sports are pro sports and the reason why most women pro sports don't get the recognition they deserve (I'm thinking of the WNHL here), it's because of poor or non-existent media coverage (the WNBA being the exception).

I'd love it if there was a women's hockey world cup game... I'd probably play Team Canada (Hayley Wickenheiser is just amazing!), but I'd have a soft spot for Team USA because of Tammi Granato (one of the best athletes of all-time to have ever played for my alma mater, Concordia University in Montreal).

Anyway, a good sports game REMAINS a good sports game, whether it features a men's league or a women's league.

I'm jk, I couldn't help myself,

If it makes everybody feel better my wife just say what I wrote & I just got slapped upside da head. LOL No since of humor.

The prob with making women sports games is they all would have large breasts and be skantly clad. And of coarse it would end up something like DOA beach volleyball all over again. Sex sells and until that stops, well, you get the idea.

On the PS2, there's a ping pong game in the Simple 2000 series with all female players. Of course, it's just like DOA:XBVB.

I personally don't like sports games at all, but I think it would be cool to have those games for those who are interested, but as it has been said before, the market is probably too small. Female soccer has gained a lot of attention over here recently though, because our team won the world championship, while the men failed :D

So its pretty much a bunch of impossibly large chested women who play ping pong instead of volleyball...or are you talking about the "dating sim" aspect of the game?

If its just large chested women playing ping pong then thats just silly enough to warrant an interest in its purcahse.

What I think the sports game companies should do is make team patches that can be downloaded. That is, someone who wants WNBA teams could just go on Xbox Live, download a patch for NBA 2005, and have those teams on the roster. The Xbox's hard drive is big enough to support this, and if the programmers are crafty enough, they might be able to fit it on a PS2 memory card. And all the next-gen consoles will support online, so why not? Actually, this makes me wonder why the sports game companies just make one game at launch and add patches to the team roster as the year goes on. I mean, it's not like the graphics are THAT much better...

Absolutly

Or better yet, we could have a WNBA game that has all of those WNBA ogres in in but nobody can hit a shot and 1 player in the whole leauge is capable of dunking. Maybe EA will invest a billion dollars in it and go bankrupt and then get bought out by sega........

But at the end of the year, they're in the bargain bins for $3. So all you have to do to get a good sports game is wait until Q4.
[over the top rant about EA]
But then again, there are so many kiddies addicted to EA that they'll buy anything they put out the day it comes out, instead of using the $40-saving method above. An executive at Atari before the crash was heard to brag:

I can put horseshit in a cartridge and sell a million of them.
Which is pretty much Larry Probst's motto (just replace "cartridge" with "disc"). And we all know what happened to Atari, so...

Yes and yes.

At first though, I believe they should test the water so to speak, by possibly having split games. You know, have the golf game where you can choose which tour to play. Or an NBA / WNBA game, or the NCAA basketball games would be easy to add female players...it wouldn't be that hard, just to see how the true sports game fans would respond.

Hell, I'm a bit disappointed that we never saw Jenny Finch Softball when the women kicked ass during the Olympics.

I would like to think the average sports gamer would be enlightened enough to accept, and even welcome those kinds of additions into the fold...although there still seems to be a lot of resistance if this thread is any indication.

No and No

Tennis 2k2 was kind of like that for the DC, but think of how little profit would be generated from any "mainstream" womens sports title. Unless the game was of a sport mainly dominated by women in popularity (such as gymnastics, figure skating, softball, etc..) it wouldn't have a chance. And even those games would be gimmicky at best. Hardly "greatest hits" potential which is what EA and Sony would care about.

Think of how terrible a WNBA game is to watch on your tv let alone play it on one. Ooh look at that layup, check out that bounce pass! Now, I wouldn't mind a gymnastics or figure skating game if the routines and manuvers were based on some timing of the analog rolls and button combos. Might be decent. But as far as a game like basketball, golf, tennis, etc.. where the difference is the women aren't as fast, strong, or explosive....no thanks.

Man, most of the attitudes about women's pro leagues in this thread are either hilariously obvious attempts at trolling, or just depressing.

In a golf game for the PS2 (I can't remember the name...), there are men and women golfers.
The names of male golfers are, obviously, Tiger Woods and evey other name you could think of in golf, etc...
The names of the Female golfers are names like "Sunshine Erotica" and stuff like that LOL, which all DO NOT depict real female golfers.
There is one Actual professional female golfer in the game, and her other profession is swinsuit modelling.
Why did they do that? Because guys (almost 100% of their audience, I would thinkg) like it.

I don't think anyone really thinks that women belong in the kitchen... and I've seen a lot of positive responses in between the negative ones.

Like I said, I would buy a serious women's sports game if it was as good, gameplay wise, as the other really good sports games out there. Gameplay is paramount obviously, and after that, I really wouldn't be bothered whether the players on the court were male or female.

There are female characters in Tiger Woods PGA Tour, but they're all fictional and have silly names. So I didn't count that.

You know, since EA bought all those rights for the next year of sports games... Why not let Sega Sports do WNBA, women's Softball, find a women's pro football league (there are a few, maybe a combination game) the WNHL...

the 2K engine is brilliant, and they could still compete with EA. $29.99 a shot to fight the $50 that EA will do. BRILLIANT!

What percentage of gamers are female? (is it up to/near 50% yet?). Out of the subset of female gamers, how many are interested in sports, or specifically sport-oriented video games? My guess is that it would be a niche market. The problem is, the marketing wizards for the major video game publishers do not get excited and go running into board rooms screaming to the execs about how the company should earmark millions of dollars towards a game for a 'niche' market.

By the way, if they're going to do a game based on a women's professional sports league, I'd remind them that I've been waiting about 20 years for someone to make me a CFL game.

The reason why I posted the above was because some of the responses in this thread were not thought-out arguments like, "it'd be great, but publishers never would because a) it's a niche market and b) they think that only guys play games". That kind of argumentation is fine with me.

So that's supposed to justify the attitude that women's sports games should be based around big breasted, scantily clad female players? No wonder women don't want to play sports games, if they have to choose between that, or male characters.
