Another one for the mega-list lovers out there. What are your favorite games in each genre of the NES/SMS/7800 console era? I included imports if they're playable without Japanese knowledge. Anything that requires a translated rom I left out.

my only gruff is that final fantasy is up there, i believe any of the dragon warrior nes games are far superior in the fact that the world was bigger, there was more to do, and there was an actual story line. the first final fantasy sucked, it mightve made a breakthrough in the genre, but it was improved on so much with other games like dragon warrior that playing final fantasy is just tortue.

im not bashing final fantasy/square franchise i love them very dearly, but taking into consideration all other rpgs for nes, i just dont think it was that good.

every other choice seems good, havent played asteroids on the 7800 so i dont know how much better it is than 1942 or Tiger-Heli for NES, it seems to me there are better choices, but agian i never played it =/

I respect Dragon Warrior but I couldn't get into the series so that's why I left it out. Asteroids on 7800 is really good. I hated the 2600 port but it's way better than it.

but can it compete with true arcade shootings a la 1942-3 and Tiger-Heli? i mean if you could play one, which would be the wiser choice (today).

I think it has aged better than those NES shooters. There are plenty of other shooters that just missed my list though(Space Harrier, Recca, Crisis Force, R-Type, Astro Warrior). It's hard to narrow it down.
