Wow, pretty damn good list if you ask me. Unfortunately, 7 of my top 15 games didn't make it. But still, all in all, a very nice list of the best Genny games. Sonic 2 absolutely dominated the field, getting ranked on every list submitted but two of them. What the 'eck were those guys smoking! But Sonic 2 was ranked on 15 of the 17 lists, and it was ranked No. 1 on four of the lists. No other game was ranked No.1 more than once. Gunstar Heroes was the next big game. It appeared on 12 of the 17 lists, it got ranked No. 1 once, and it appeared in the top 5, 5 times. The closest game to that was Sonic 3, but Sonic 3 wasn't ranked No.1 on anybodies list.

Ok, now for the people that participated in this ranking, and also for new people if they wish to do so. I think what we should do is do the next 25 games. That way, we have a really nice top 50 Genesis Power Ranking.

The way it works, is that all of the games listed above are eliminated from being ranked. Those 25 games have already locked down those positions and they are secure in the top 25. So completely ignore those games, and rank the best games that you can possibly rank, without using any of those 25 games in your list.

This is actually the more interesting part of the power rankings, because all of the most obvious games and the most popular, are in the list above, so the next 25 games becomes much more interesting.

For the people that 17 people that submitted lists already, I can simply remove the above games from your list, and keep the other games in numerical order. I'll go through everybodies lists and then I'll let you know how many more games I need from you to complete your list. Some people have lists that are very much filled with those 25 games, and other people have lists that don't have many of those games above.

Also, new people are welcome to give me a top 25 list, just don't rank any of the games above. The more lists that I get, the more accurate and a better power ranking we end up with.

IF YOU ARE GOING TO SEND ME A LIST SEND IT TO MY EMAIL

Seems like a fair and accurate list! Not a huge Genny fan, but a lot of the games on the list are definate must plays for anyone.

I'm not exactly sure how the power rankings were compiled (did everyone just name their top 10,25,50, or X amount of genny games?) But where the F is Strider?

17 people submitted Top 25 rankings for U.S. Genny games. Based on the way the games were ranked, we ended up with this list. A ton of great games didn't end up making the cut. Contra Hard Corps. and Streets of Rage (the original) were the two closest games to missing the cut.

Top 25. And you'd know had you sent one in...

Great to see the results -- but where the heck is Comix Zone? I'm amazed Herzog Zwei did so well, and that Rocket Knight Adventures didn't place higher than ninth...

Too bad my beloved Granada didn't make the cut. :(

I didn't see the original post to send one in. I'm not actually upset or anything. Truth be told I always find these types of lists very interesting. Strider is my favorite game for the genny though, but I'm a sucker :-P for a well made arcade port.

The best thing about finally seeing the list, is all the arguments over what did and didn't get ranked. Comix Zone did appear on 4 of the 17 lists, but not very high up those lists.

As for Granada, well, it only got ranked once! Of course we know who's list that was on.

Interesting note: I recently bought Granada at GameCrazy for $1.99 loose cart, after seeing you rank the game on your list. It is a pretty cool game.

The game that shocked me most was Golden Axe. Personally, not to piss anybody off, but I consider that game to be quite mediocre at best. I know that it was a super early Genesis game, and that for people that first got a Genesis, they were amazed to be playing Golden Axe at home, and for it to be pretty close to the Arcade, but I really think this is game that made the list more because of it's nostalgia factor that anything. Of course, I can say that about a number of games.

But I'm kinda amazed that if people were going to go with the nostalgia factor in such a big way that altered beast didn't do better, or Strider. Strider got lots of publicity and hype back in the day because it was the first 8 meg cart, and it was one of the first Genesis games to have a huge PR presence behind it. Again, a good game, a solid game, but probably is going to be ranked high on the next list more to it's reputation as a big Genny game that purely based on quality.

Of course, everybody has their own reasons for ranking games where they rank them. I ranked John Madden Football '93 as my No. 1 game overall, but it only appeared on one other list besides mine. To this day, I still feel that the Genesis version of John Madden Football '93 is the best pure game of video game football out there. The game just played so good, and had such balance to it, between the offense and defense. But if you hate sports games, then why the hell would you rank Madden 93?

So everybody has their certain game that they hold close to their heart for some reason, but sometimes it can be a very unpopular choice to other folks.

I had 14 games on my top 25 list that didn't make the cut, so I'm well on my way to already finishing my next 25 game list.

Can I compile a new list of games from both of my lists? I'd rather eliminate all the games that were already ranked from both lists, and combine them to see what I get. There's only a few that were on my second list that made it, and not many on my first list that I'd care to try again for the next one.

As for Arcus Odyssey, that one was pretty high on my second list. I ended up with an "A" list and a "B" list, so I pretty much have my own top 50 list already. But I will need to combine the two now, after zapping the winners.

As for Granada, it is a very cool game, but I wish that it had been made after the 6 button controller came out, so it would have 6 button support! It would play so much better if you could configure the buttons like you can on Guardian Force for the Saturn. BTW, if you're a Granada fan, then you MUST play Guardian Force! It's like Granada on steroids. I highly recommend it!

It's supposed to be U.S. only.

one guy ranked Bare Knuckles 3 as well. I'm not a expert at all on non U.S. Genny carts, so I didn't know for sure if games like Zero Wing or Sensible Soccer were U.S. or not. I didn't think that Sensible Soccer was, but I wasn't sure.

If you look at the lists above, that have the games that didn't make it, you'll see that Bloodlines was one that missed the top 25 by not a huge margin. But still it missed the top 25.

The bottom line is that the games are going to fall the way people rank them. Power to the people. Whichever way they rank their games determines the power rankings.

If you look at my list, the top two Genesis games for me are John Madden Football '93 and Kid Chameleon. I was amazed to see that these two games only got ranked by two people. Me and on guy both had Madden '93 and me and another guy had Kid Chameleon.

I'm not that suprised about Madden '93, considering it's a sports game, but I'm somewhat suprised about Kid Chameleon. I didn't expect to see Kid Chameleon ranked high on too many lists, but I thought a few more people would have ranked it around 21 or 23 or 24 or something like that.

Talk about a underrated game.

But I will agree and say that I'm quite shocked that both Contra Hard Corps and Castlevania: Bloodlines didn't make it.

I'm pretty sure Sensible Soccer was released in the US. I think Virgin handled all the Gremlin and Bitmap Brothers games. It wasn't as well received because a) soccer isn't that big here, and b) EA's FIFA series got all the attention. Oh, well, it's absolutely adored overseas, and it's a great arcade-style game, so I'll lobby for that.

Also, I remember Rampart and Roadblasters, two excellent Atari/Tengen games that were almost perfect on the Genesis. Heck, I created an Advance Wars map based on Rampart, so I don't need to praise it any higher.

Overall, a good list. Not too many surprises, but the second half should be more interesting, especially since we know how we all voted. Any surprises coming?

Well, I have to say that I totally disagree with your take. I absolutely can't stand it when people will combine a series of games into 1 ranking. Each game must be judged on it's own merit. Sonic 2 stood alone as the No.1 ranked game, and it should get that individual recognition. Sonic 3 also got alot of love in the rankings. And then the original Sonic also got it's support. Even Sonic and Knuckles got ranked. So actually a total of 4 Sonic games.

Now you might think that those are 3 wasted spots, when you could have simply had the Sonic Series of games get ranked in one spot. But that would discount want these Sonic games individually accomplished. Each Sonic game had it's own flavor, and it's own feel. Each Sonic game need to get it's individual respect, if it has enough votes, to be ranked.

We are going to rank 26 to 50 right now. So if you would like to, send me a top 25 list, just don't rank any of the games that made the first top 25. And then you list will go into the mix to determine 26 to 50.

The thing is, that 26 to 50 is going to be much, much, more interesting anyways. The first 25 games get's all of the big ones out of the way, all of the obvious ones, and the overhyped ones, and the classic ones, etc, etc.

26 to 50 should give a much better flavor to the mix, with all the hidden jems getting ranked.

Yes, Anthony1, DO NOT DO NOT just combine a series. I agree with you completely! Just my opinion of course, but why the hell would you combine a series, that really isn't a "true list" and is just kinda like making a half ass list that way.

Anyways, I agree with Sonic 2 being #1. I think overall you have compiled a great list and kudos to EVERYONE doing it!!!

I do think that. And here are my reasons:

I played sonic 2 and i Loved it. very stage is very unique, and different than the others. I really enjoyed this game

When I bought sonic 3, I started losing interest after level 3...and the other levels look very "mechanic" to me...there are no nice backgrounds...I watched a speedrun of this game (someone playing it very fast) and all the later levels look very much alike...

This is my personal perception, so It might not be the same as yours, but this is why I liked sonic 2 much better...

...Also, I cannot phathom how anyone at all can think that Sonic 2 is superior to Sonic 3 in ANY way.

More levels. More challenge. No "cutscenes" bringing the game to a screeching halt.

unfortunately, only about 5 people sent me their 26 through 50 list, and I was going to try to hit the pavement and start PM'ing people to get them to send me a 26 to 50 list, but I started to get real busy on some other things. But if anybody else wants to champion the cause and try to get all the rest of the people to give me their 26 to 50 lists, then that would be great.

best way to do it, is to go back and look at all the people that submitted lists and then PM them and tell them to try to send me a 26 to 50 list at some point in the near future.

my email again is tapdatazz1@yahoo.com

If I wasn't so busy right now on some other stuff, I would definitely try to light a fire under some of the guys to have them get me their lists, because 26 to 50 is definitely the most interesting part of the rankings.

All the "givens" are taken out of the equation with the official top 25, so you get a better feel for things in 26 to 50.

I am one of the guilty non-list-turning-in guys. If you have a deadline that would help me out, as I am also pretty busy right now (and a deadline makes me prioritize it).

What cut-scenes? Sonic 3 had better bosses, better moves. Tails can fly, Sonic has a different shield "move" depending on whether or not he's shieldless, has the lightning sheild, water shield, or fire shield. Sonic 3 had bigger levels, and more importantly, each level as multiple paths. If you play as Tails, Sonic, or Knuckles, (of you add on Sonic & Knuckles), you'll get a different game play experience.

I think that you just didn't really play Sonic 3. It's more in depth and the levels are better than Sonic 2, ten fold.

I've beaten Sonic 3 several times. Beaten Sonic 3 attached to Sonic & Knuckles several times. Good game, but I still prefer Sonic 2. This is my opinion.

I was wondering when this would be updated as well...

You know, in defense of your Sonic 3 is better than Sonic 2 take, a good number of people that had Sonic & Knuckles pretty high on their lists, also indicated that they primarily used it with Sonic 3.

The question was, do I give those points for Sonic & Knuckles or Sonic 3.

In the end, I decided that Sonic & Knuckles as a game had to stand on it's own, and somebody could indicate if they played a particular game with Sonic & Knuckles, but it would still be a ranking of Sonic & Knuckles and not that particular game. Also, normally the person also ranked that other game in their list anyways.

If even I did give those votes to Sonic 3, Sonic 2 would have still been ranked No.1

As for my personal take on the Sonic 3 vs. Sonic 2 argument, I have to go with Sonic 2. Maybe ultimately, Sonic 3 could actually be the better game in terms of design and features and technology or whatever, but Sonic 3 didn't have the kind of impact that Sonic 2 did.

Alot of original games get ranked higher than the sequels because even though the sequels are sometimes much improved, the original game gave a much bigger impression on that person. I know that Sonic 2 wasn't the original game, but it was before Sonic 3, and it came out more during the hey day of the Genny, while Sonic 3 came a little later.

Actually quite a few of those games didn't make the "official" top 25, so what you could do is see which ones did make the top 25, eliminate those from your list, then add enough additional games to have 25 games, and actually number them from 26 to 50 and then email it to me.

It's not too late to submit a 26 to 50 list.
