PS2 networking question

IF you wanted to play a internet capable game head to head with 2 ps2's could you just usb the 2 of them together or use a hub or something?

In other words do you have to have the broadband adaptor to do that?

if they're internet capable I think you have to go through the internet. but there are games that are linkable like GT3 which use firewire to connect between them. but the two technologies are different so you can be made for one, the other, or both, but you can't use one as the other (firewire as internet connection or internet as p2p link).
