DDRMAX is probably the best version of DDR the U.S. will ever get, but MAX2 isn't as good, and Extreme is just not good.

Ultramix 1 was okay, haven't played Ultramix 2.

It doesn't even have Sakura as an unlock? Daaaaamn. It's even worse than I thought.

The Japanese PS2 Extreme is much better. It has every new song from the arcade game except for Senorita, and a bunch of old stuff. Close to 100 songs total I think.

I pretty much agree with Yash about the hierarchy of US PS2 releases. Max was awesome, and even better than the Japanese Max. Max 2 was a solid release, but nothing to scream about. Extreme was just a train wreck. I think it only has about a dozen songs that actually debuted on the arcade Extreme. Then combine that with the retarded bugs like being unable to turn off input from the square, X, triangle, and circle buttons, and the glitch that makes it impossible to unlock Memories without Action Replay or memory card hacking...

Ultramix 2 is really, really good, but it's very different from the PS2 versions, so I wouldn't go selling those just yet. It's got a very American feel to it, being developed by Konami Hawaii and all. There are a couple Extreme songs thrown in as well, like Love Shine, A, and V for example. But overall it's got quite an American club music tone to it, which is kind of a refreshing change. The song packs that you can buy (7 and newer, at least) rock, as they feature quite a few songs yanked from other Bemani games like Beatmania, Guitar Freaks, and Drummania. Oh, it's also got really solid multiplayer support, allowing you to have up to 4 players in Arcade mode, and you can even play Vs. Double (2 players each using 2 mats). Plus it's got the infamous Quad mode - 1 player using 4 mats. And there are a few battle and party type modes that get pretty insane when coupled with the proper songs.

I haven't played Ultramix 1, but the song list honestly didn't look that impressive to me. I'll probably pick up a copy some day. But UM2 was enough to convince me to get an XBox, after seeing how Extreme turned out. He he.

I'd say keep the PS2 versions....i've heard from various people that they are better than the Ultramixs. Mainly because you can miss a boat load on the Ultramixes and still have your bar maxed out. Not quite sure how correct that is.

I've always heard MAX was better and combined more the Japanese feel with the U.S and as DDR went to Extreme in the US and went too American then Japanese. Are alot of the older DDR songs on MAX?

In my opinion...

DDRMAX2 > DDRMAX > DDR UM2 > DDR UM > DDR EX

And besides, since you already have a DDR pad for the PS2, you could also get the first DDR (for PSX), DDR Konamix and Disney Mix (although demand have kept Disney Mix pretty high in price).

I have always thought DDRMax2 was the best. And from just about everything I have heard (other than dave) the Ultramix games blow completely. I wish they didn't totally f'up Extreme though....
