I just got this game off of ebay, and I know it is a copy of the org proto but I was wondering would you still consider this are any other copy of a proto to actually be a proto?

I...think you're asking if a bootleg cartridge of an unreleased game would be considered a prototype?

No, it's a bootleg cartridge that happens to contain code from an unreleased game. There's a whole chapter on this in the Digital Press Collector's Guide. These are considered worthless as collectibles, but if you can't get the game any other way...why not?

The data's prototype, the cart is not. Simple as that.

Original proto - Valuable.
Copy of a prototype - Worthless.

One of the original written copies of the Declaration of Independance - Valuable.
Xeroxed copy of The Declatation of Independance - Worthless.

Original Beatles White Album - Valuable.
A bootleg cassette you recorded off the radio when they had some Beatles special - Worthless.

Shall I go on? Originals = $$$. Copies = crap.

Well, that's not quite so cut and dry, although it won't affect prototype games anytime soon. Copies *can* be valuable, but only if they are the only existing copies, and especially if they are copies from extremely early in a technology's life (for example, way back in the old days of mechanical 30-line television, there were recordings made of broadcast, and those copies are extremely valuable today). I agree, this is rare, and like I said, it's unlikely that it will matter in this context, but since you mentioned the recording of a Beatles special, I figured I'd bring it up. Besides, if you had the only existing copy of a Beatles special, then it might be quite valuable to Beatles fans.

But the only way I could see it being applicable to games, is if a person made a copy of a game, didn't release the ROM, and the original prototype cart fully bitrotted. Then, said copy (whether it be the original cart reflashed, or a new cart), could potentially be worth something. But, as I said, that would be rare, and I haven't heard of such a thing happening yet.

Don't really give 2 shits what it's worth, I'm just trying figure out what it would be classified as more than anything.

But, thanks fo the opinions.

be wary of AVP for lynx I heard that most of those that are out there are just basically one level and (non playable in most places only can move a little bit around) anyone care to share more information here and I recall seeing AVP for the lynx on ebay that went for about $700 was that one complete or ??? ..

Have a link? I don't think it's possible that it was complete as the game was never officially finished and released. AFAIK there is no packaging and/or manual.
Also Best electronics are still selling these for around $30, so anyone shelling out $700 is either crazy, misinformed or plain stupid :)

Proto = real game, worth big money.

copy of proto = worth the parts, but, as others have not made it clear, you at least have a game that you would otherwise not have. To me, that makes it valuable to the person who has it - not anyone else though. I have a decent amount of proto copies, and consider them part of my collection. Thus, the proto copy is worth something to me. How else could I get a game that has only 1 or so actually copies in existence!!!!

As for the copies on ebay, if anyone is crazy enough to pay that kind of money, they are not very intelligent. I got AVP for $30, not $700!
