View Full Version : I think I wanna collect for the DS..

Yeah.. I think I do.
I've tried collecting for the NES. I've tried for the Genesis. I've even tried DC and Saturn... SNES,.. etc. But I think the reason I am failing at those is because their lives are over, there are many games out there that I will never bea ble to acquire. So it makes collecting for these systems hard.
So what makes collecting for the DS a good idea? Well, for starters, the lineup os starting off really slow so far. It would be easy to pick up all the US releases over a few months. (Maybe wait a while before I go for the overpriced EA games.)
I already have a DS, it's practically a newborn, games aren't plentiful yet. If I keep close watch on the releases, I could probably keep up with the system much better than any others out there right now.
Plus, I already have a really cool DS banner hanging from my ceiling and the games look super cool on a bookshelf.
I feel it will be much easier to collect for a system if you begin when the system is newly releases rather than after its sat on a shelf for years.
Plus, the benefit is that I know there are already a lot of games I am actually going to want to play! So it's not like I'm just buying a lot of crap right and left just to have. Bonus!
So, what do you think? Stupid idea? Good idea? I think it's a great idea. Opinions?
BTW, I wouldn't even bother with imports unless it was a game I wanted and had money to spare. This would be mainly US releases.

Your theory is the same I used for N-Gage.
Hence, "good idea" :)
Most importantly, have fun with your games!

most people dont start collecting for a system while its new because new games are expensive. 50 bucks per game is a lot, and if youre trying to keep up with every release, it becomes ridiculously expensive (im talking consoles here). it is much much cheaper to collect for the system after its fased out, since you pay 10-20 per game, the prices start rising for the common good games a good 5 years after the game/console is gone.
for portables its different, games are cheaper, less frequent and hence will run you less. DS and Ngage have collectable written all over them, with the shelf/stack friendly cases and relatively low price games (not to mention slow release, so its manageable to keep up).
so i say if you got hte dinero, go for it. i too love my ds, but i think ill only buy the games that i would play, im not too concerned with having EVERY game (most of the time).

i think though, when the ds gets out of its infancy, the games are gonna start coming out a lot quicker and will be harder to keep up with.
i think its easier to collect for a system that is done....you know what your goal is
good luck with whatever your decide though

Its a mistake, dont start collecting for a newborn, wait to it gets cheaper.
Buy big lots on ebay , just buy the releases with very limited numbers or the ones you think are going to be very hard to find in the future.
And remember you can find any game for any system sometime in the future.
Just patience is the word of the collector, took me 5 years to get a mint copy of Aero Fighters for the snes for a reasonable good price.
But i did

I think it's a great idea as well. I plan on collecting for it too, every game.

As Joe, said this method does work very well with the N-Gage, and will also work good for the DS if the games will be released as slowly as they are right now.

The problem with collecting for the DS is the fact that the amount of software for the DS is going to explode this fall, to the point where it'd be ridiculously expensive to even attempt to get all the games for it. You also have to keep in mind that portable systems are and always have been a magnet for crapware. What pride is there in owning all of the Mary Kate and Ashley games?

That's pretty much what I'm doing, I'm just not buying EVERY game at launch price. I'm only picking up the one's I'm remotely interested in. I think I have 12 now, I'm missing crap games like "Robots", "Madden" & "Ping Pals".
But overall, I say good decision. Even though I've been very dissapointed with my last two pick-ups (Yoshi & Retro Atari Classics). LOL Now I gotta get Pokemon Dash.

This really could be said of most systems though. For example, Make My Video series on Sega CD. Really crappy, but worthwhile for having that piece of gaming history.
I personally don't collect for current systems. The games are usually prohibitively expensive. I typically only buy the games i want to play, and then snap up more when they start getting clearanced out at the end of a systems life. I also prefer knowing exactly what I have to collect to get a complete collection. It would be infuriating to me to have to try and keep up with releases with no end in sight. That's why I collect for the NES. I know exactly how many gamees I need to get and I can buy most of them on the cheap. It is possible that none of this may apply to you. If so, have fun collecting for the DS. I think it will prove a worthwhile system to collect for. If what I've said does apply, tough it out for a year until Nintendo cranks out the next Gameboy and snap up all the DS games on the cheap.

Ye.. agree. Its realy expencive to collect all games now because they are new. But atleast its easy to get them now :)

i do the release list for the DP Wire....and i looks like the DS games are starting to speed up.....it was just slow because it was a new system....releases will speed up, and the cost of keeping up with them is gonna go through the roof

Alright, guys. I didn't mean I would run out and buy every game on launch day. Only, as Cosmo said, the games I really want. Working in retail, I can keep an eye on the ones that don't sell and grab them when they drop in price.
And if tiere really is someone keeping a list of the games, it'll be easier to check off which I have already.
Don't worry, I wasn't planning on keeping up with the system in real-time, just making it my only collecting goal. My main collecting goal.
I realize how expensive it can get, but I also realize the satisfaction you get from buying something you want.
As for it being relatively new, I can keep closer watch on the games that might one day become rare. Imagine if I wanted to get a copy of say Captain Comic for the NES right now. I'd first have to find a copy, then secondly decide if I want to spend my life savings on it. With a newer system, I can keep an eye on the games and make that occasional purchase of a game I don't want to play, but have a feeling it'll never show up again.
You know what I mean.

And that would be me, I'm keeping up with DS releases and making sure I have an up to date release listing. I gotta work on getting the release dates down with them as well though, which I think I'll do today. Here's the current list....

Feel The Magic: XY/XX**
Madden NFL 2005
Mr. Driller: Drill Spirits**
Ping Pals

The best thing about collecting for the ds, is the fact that this is the very first time that nintendo has released the same clamshell case types in all 3 regions.
No more fragile card boxes hurrah :D
Im going for only imports for the ds, unless some fantastic rpg gets released in the us then i'll pick up the english version.
Heres all of my ds stuff so far
