I thought this to be worthy of it's own thread. While Fatal Frame may be mentioned a few times over in the other thread, maybe it would have been mentioned more if SINISTAR hadn't been an option.

My reason for asking is that I've been trying to find something nice and scary for the wife & myself to engross ourselves in.

I haven't played too many horror games so my vote shouldn't hold as much merit as some of the more active gamers around these parts but my vote is going to have to go to Fatal Frame.

At the time I was playing it, I was living in Japan. (The game takes place in Japan too) I could look out my rear window and see an old Japanese graveyard. I was playing by myself while the wife was at work. Lights out & volume blasting. I got up to use the restroom but as I was approaching the restroom door I noticed the shower curtain was closed. I stood there for around 30 seconds and stared at the curtain...weighing the possibility that there could be a murderer taking safe harbor in my shower. I decided to hold it in and went back to the game.

So what do you say? What’s the most frightening console game you've played from the Dreamcast to now?

Hmmmm....the SCARIEST? Probably Silent Hill 2. That game just gave me the creeps! :)

Maybe I havent gotten far enough into it. Ive started it twice but I cant get through the first couple hours. Too much running and not enough "AARGH! @_@ "

Resident Evil 4 is the most scary that I have played, but I dont play a lot of scary games. I'm told that the Silent Hill Series is scarier than the Resident Evil Series, but I havent played enough Silent Hill to make that determination.

Silent Hill 4..that game is so screwed up...

the first Silent Hill still bugs me out at times

Part 3 is just freaky..

as for Resident Evil..I still love the first...the remake and the original...the isolation...you're stuck in this damn house...and there's only one way out..I love those odds..

I thought Eternal Darkness for Gamecube was unique and very scary at times. Really really messes with ya.

And you can find it cheap now. I'd love a sequel.

Fatal Frame 2: Director's Cut for XBOX is pretty damn freaky, too.

My vote also has to go for Silient Hill 2. The only game to ever send shivers up my spine when the radio started spewing static. Those little crawling bastards that pop from under cars still make me jump even when I know they are coming!

Dang....I thought this was going to be about the scariest Dreamcast game.

I was expecting a dozen or so posts about Illbleed. LOL

I'm back in the market for a scare fest. Any new thoughts on the subject?

It depends on what systems you're currently rocking, but I have a few good games for ye to try out, Master Moniker.

Siren (PS2) is an excellent game, and scary to boot. It's very difficult at times, but it's always fair, and the story is unusually well developed. It's a PS2 game you can find for less than twenty bucks most anywhere(I've got Siren on the brain since there's now a demo on PSN of one of the new PS3 Siren games. If you've the means, check that out too.)

If you have a hankering for two player horror action, with your wife or a buddy, try Obscure(PS2/Xbox).Oh, yeah... Listen, because this is important. AVOID THE SEQUEL LIKE A VOMITING HOBO. You want the original PS2/Xbox Obscure, not the recent Wii/PS2 sequel, just to reiterate. It's fun, and even if it isn't too scary, it may just be the best date game since Bubble Bobble... Scary monsters plus two players on screen equals a lot of cuddling.

For burning grandfather corpse rape, nothing beats Haunting Ground(PS2). It's an odd Capcom game that relies predominantly on screwing with your sense of male christian sexual guilt to instill a serious case of the heebie jeebies. It's impossible for me to describe without spoilers, but google it if you're curious.

I checked Youtube for some gameplay and Siren looks really good. Thanks for the recommendation, I think I'll get a hold of that one. I wasn't able to find it on GameGavel but there may be one floating around the B&S forum here. Actually, there is one if it's still available. Anyway, I shouldn't have a hard time tracking it down.

I may check into Obscure later. Normally, she'd rather just watch me play. That's why I look for games that can be fun to watch.

I recently put away Call of Cthulhu Dark corners of the Earth for a while, being honest the game was actually giving me nightmares.(Well I'm also stuck on a part) But it is prob. the most Evil game Iv'e ever played. You may want to check it out if you have an X-box set up.

I think it's an X-box only release, well worth the 20 beans I payed for it though. Also Bethesda(Morrowind) put it out, so the quality is there.

Also thanks to G-Boobie for the mini Haunting Ground review as I was wondering weather or not to pick that up. Think I will now!

I don't have an Xbox. I'll get around to picking one up though. Thanks for the recommendation.

Resident Evil: Code Veronica or Doom 3 for me. I haven't played a lot of scary games on next gen consoles though...

I Didn't think Code Veronica was scary. I had X on the PS2. I ran out and snatched it up on release day, and then never even finished it.

Silent Hill, especially the first one. It really messes with your head. I remember this one part in the original silent hill when my friend was playing and there was 2 of us watching him. Its such a innocent little part but it scared us hardcore, its not so much WHAT happened, its more of what didn't happen...then that thing ended up happening anyways.

Sorry if that sounds real vague and confusing but I don't want to spoil anything (if you haven't played it) But also this was when silent hill first came out, would it still scare me today? possibly, but when it first happened we all jumped...also today I know whats gonna happen...even though I know what will happen I think I would still jump a little.

I always found Silent Hill 3 to be the scariest (and most fun) of the bunch.

And while not so much a "BOO!" kind of scary, Eternal Darkness on Gamecube is quite the mind-fuck.

Ya, these were the only 2 modern games that I have played and were in the horror category. :P I actually got stuck on the damn plane in Code Veronica. I had saved with no life or something and always died against the monster. I also had the PS2 version. I only played some of the first level of Doom 3, and it was damn dark and I think I jumped a couple times...

I've never really been scared by a videogame (nor by a scary movie), but the one that comes closest is actually Disaster Report. Most people probably don't think of that as a particularly scary game, but to me, it's just about the only game with a threat that's 100% believable.

I recently played FEAR and I am now hooked on the horror genre. So here are all the games listed so far...

- Fatal Frame series
- Silent Hill series
- Resident Evil series
- Eternal Darkness
- Illbleed
- Siren
- Obscure
- Call of Cthuluh: Dark Corners of the Earth
- Doom 3
- Disaster Report (?)
- Half Life

Any Other suggestions?

Maybe the scariest thing of all will be my upcoming GameStop recipt.

I'm surprised this hasn't been mentioned, but the Half-Life series never fails to scare the shit out of me. I remember playing the demo thinking it was just another military shooter type FPS, I then suddenly started to float up in the air and freaked the fuck out when I looked up to see something was about to chew on my head.

As others have said, Silent Hill 2 is on the top of my list of scariest games ever. It starts off very slow, but once things start to pick up the game doesn't hold back. It's really one of the few (if not only) games in the genre that really stay focused on a storyline and makes you actually care about what's happening the the characters.

Siren is also another creepy game, but the difficulty kind of kills the game for most people. I was able to get into it, but I stopped playing it half way through and could never get back into it.

I picked up Siren today. I found it at Game X-change for $9.95. Seemingly complete. I'm looking forward to it!! Thnx, again, G-bo.
I checked out the Siren 3 footage online...it's making me want a PS3.

You're welcome, Master Moniker. The first 'chapter' of Siren is the hardest in my opinion, and will likely cause a bit of tooth grinding. Do not fear the FAQ :). I must have died thirty times before I was sufficiently re-trained in the ways of sight jacking to play effectively.

There's also a sequel to Siren that was not released in North America, but is allegedly even better than the first. It was released in Europe though, sporting a full english translation, so if you've the means...

I dont've the means. I don't think I own a single PAL...anything. Wait, I do. In Australia, I stocked up on a whole bunch of bargain-bin UFC VHS tapes. Only to take them back to the ship and see that Aussies are PAL. They're still laying around somewhere.
Anyway, I've read about the sequel. I, actually, read is was not as good as the first. No matter, though. If I like this one enough, and if my wife likes watching it, it's all the more reason I should have a PS3 in the house. :)

I'm a fan of horror and buy and collect horror games and movies. Chris' Survival Horror Quest is a nice fan site that I think you would enjoy browsing thru for some suggestions. You can find that here...

While you've had quite a few suggestions, I might as well give you one or two more that I haven't seen mentioned- in case you're looking for stuff in the future. Now I have both of the following on XBOX, but I believe they're on PS2 as well...

Cold Fear- A fairly short game, that takes place out to sea. You start out on a abandoned ship that is filled with humans turned zombies, during one hell of a storm. Lotsa atmosphere, and pretty decent graphics. This can be had very cheap... probably under $5- so it's a great value for the money (even if you don't end up liking it). The bonus to the XBOX version is it's 720p capable- so it looks awesome on an HDTV.

The Thing- Takes place not too long after the events in the film. Not as creepy as Cold Fear, but a good game nonetheless. Plenty of gore, and some cool extra touches like squad command and "sanity meters." This one can probably be had dirt cheap too.

As a side note: These games don't piss me off as much as the GC resident evil remakes. They seem a little more fair as far as ammo and health power-ups go.

Surprised that no one has mentioned Rule of Rose (for PS2) yet. Definitely creepy, but the controls are somewhat awkward.

Kuon (also for PS2) is a good atmospheric horror game if you aren't put off by the setting (ancient feudal Japan).

Although its not scary for the majority of the game, there's a level in Thief: Deadly Shadows set in a haunted asylum which made me jump a bit.

Carrier for Dreamcast is a very good survival horror game and actually tries to do something new, instead of just being another RE knock off. I haven't had a chance to beat it yet, but I've spent a few hours playing it and found it very enjoyable. It's catch is that you can't always see the enemies, you have to use these goggles you get to either see them or detect if someone is infected.
