View Full Version : How much to offer for a TurboDuo?

Hello all. I was in a game exchange today and saw a TurboDuo under the counter. The guy who was in there didnt know how much it was and said the guy who would know will be back tommorow. I really want it, but am not sure how much I should limit myself to. Bear in mind the following:

-It is LOOSE. I dont mean loose as in not boxed, I mean loose as in no hookups. I have a TG16, so I assume that I can use the hookups from that, but whatever.

-Because it is loose, I have no way of knowing if it works. It looks to be in good shape, and it has the dust cover for the hucard slot. I would call the condition a 7/10.

The amount I had in my mind was $50. 50 or less and I would take it. Any more than that and I'm not sure if it is worth it or not, but I have really been looking to add this to my collection, and this is the only one I have ever seen in the wild.

So I ask, what do you all consider to be a reasonable price for this system? What is the most you would pay for it if you saw it in a store?

Thanks

Chris

do not assume this! i'm too lazy to unhook mine right now but i'm 99% sure its not the same power supply, also you will not be able to use and tg-16 controllers on it without a special convertor.

when i negotiate a console price i hammer sellers on the missing cords, without the cords it in effect untestable and could be considered broken. odds are you can get it running with a sub power supply but dont let that stop you from using that as leverage.

unless the seller knows a bit about the consoles true worth you should start out friendly but then point out the missing parts and offer way low like $20.

In addition to the controller differences you'll also need a special A/V cable for the Turbo Duo as there is no RF jack. But yeah, it could be a great deal for under $50.

So far that was about what I was thinking. If he sayd" make me an offer" Im gonna say $20. If he gets all hoity-toity about it at that point, then I'll ask him what he wants for it. I really want this system, but I'm not gonna pay an arm and a leg for it.

you can get the AV cable for the Turbo Duo and the controllers here:

http://www.tzd.com/forsale.cgi

brandy new. $12 for the AV cable and $20 for the controller.

From the same site, here is how to get an aftermarket power supply that will work with the Duo:

Go to Radio Shack and ask for part #273-1772, then ask for a "Q" tip (don't let them charge you another $4.99, a tip is included. It better be for $20.00.)

The tip must be center positive when you plug it into the adapter. Don't worry this will all be clear once you see the part. It's 9V, 1300mA but no one makes a 10V, 1000mA, it was proprietary to NEC. Your Duo will only draw as much amperage as it needs, so that number is OK. 9V has tested well enough, but TZD assumes no liability (natch.)

I would start off by asking if the guy knows where you can get all the hook ups, then piss and moan about how hard it is to find all this stuff and how it takes a 10V power supply that nobody makes. Then offer $20. I would not spend more than $40 because you do not even know if the system is working.

Good luck. Report back!!

$50 wouldn't be too much in my opinion. If you found out that it didn't work you could at least get your money back on ebay, broken ones always go for at least $50 if they power on. Plus, I think that turbo zone is still repairing these through their website. Athough it could all end up being a lot of work for nothing. At the end of the day you wouldn't be loosing anything and you could end up with a duo for a bomb ass price. Just as a reference, the only two I've seen in the wild were both priced at $175.

You will defenitely need different controllers and av connectors. I have not been able to find a turbo duo controller on ebay at all, but I havent looked much. I just got a convertor for turbo direct or something like that, but it took a LONG time to ship. The tg16-duo convertor works just great. I believe the AV cable is that same kind of connection as a genesis 1/SMS av connection.

I bought my system with no controller for 80 bucks on ebay. It was listed as a non working system. Got it in about a week and it works just fine and still does. Don't know why he had problems with it. It was defenitely worth the 80 bucks, so I'd highly recommend going for 50 if you can. Only thing I don't like about mine was the missing hu card cover, but what can ya do when ya get something like that cheap?

I once got PC Engine DUo box set for $47 off eBay two years ago...
the seller had four units listed at the same time and with bit of manupulations and bidding I managed to get one for that price while other three went for $70-90... he he

sadly never seen PC Engine Duo at that price ever again...
last time when I got my PC Engine Duo-RX box set I paid $169 in Japan...

OK well thanks everyone. Looks like it will be a hassle gettting the hookups for this thing, and I will try to leverage that into a cheaper purchase. I'll report back here tommorow and let you know what happened. Thanks a lot for the replies.

Good luck. It is quite tough to find those damn turbo duo controllers (still searching one out myself...) but the hook ups shouldn't be too bad. Looking foward to the results ;D. Does the guy happen to have any card/cd games for it?

Wasn't TZD running a scam that stole people's Duos that they sent in for repairs?

Or was that another "company?"

That was another company. TZD is scrupulously honest.

As for the Duo, if he won't go lower, I'd offer you at least $60 + shipping for it, untested as is. :P Seriously. Maybe more. They're easily worth that loose.

Maybe I'm missing what you're talking about but the only "duo" controller I've ever found on there is a turbopad which is converted with a tg16-duo convertor cable, which is what I bought from there and used on my own turbopad controller. Didn't know they sold the a/v cables, that's cool. As far as a real turbopad, I myself have never been able to find one, but perhaps they're out there somewhere.

yes. the sound circuit tends to go out and CD-ROM drive isn't of high quality...
Even PC Engine Duo is suffering the same... (reason why I got Duo-RX)

Found enough cool stuff this weekend anyways.

Thanks.

Oh, I wasn't aware they were coverted pads.
