Maybe I just alway root for the underdog since I love the Dreamcast and the N-gage. But the more I read about the Gizmondo the more I lean more toward it over the PSP and DS. http://www.gizmondo.com/ I think the games sound fun and the possibiltites sound even more fun. I just wanted to know if I'm the only person who is thinking about picking one of these up. Honestly I think I'd rather have one these than a PSP. I still think some day I'll pick up the DS but probably not untill Katamary Damancy gets a release.

Honestly, I don't think it looks that bad; it's just that it's coming at a really bad time when, as everybody is aware, there's this big to-do about the DS and the PSP. I don't think it's gonna do to well because there just isn't enough room in the portable market for too many consoles. Aside from Game Gear's moderately successful sell-through, there's really only been one for as long as the market has existed.

I don't think it will do well either but I think it looks interesting and very collectible. Thought I'd see what other peoples intrest was. I probably won't get one at launch in fact I probably won't spend over $150 for one and I think it's going to retail over $300 so it will be a tough road for the Gizmondo.

a true gamer looking just at the Shmups. I have no idea how much these will be. Probalby too much which will probably make the system fail. Angel Fish does look like a good shmup and I'd like to get my hands on it when it gets less expensive.

ditto

but, maybe in a different market everyone would feel better about it....the ds and the psp are gonna kill it

ill get one when i can get it CIB for $50 or less, but, this is one system I won't be getting on launch day...im still trying to find an N-Gage CIB for less than $50

Isn't the thing going to cost, like $500? Why would drop 500 bucks on a piece of hardware, when I can spend $250 on the superior specs and stronger lineup of the PSP.

And in fact, I'm too cheap to buy a PSP at all, so there's no chance in Hell I'm going to pick up a Gizmondo until it's in the bargain bin about six months from now.

well I don't think it's going to cost $500 but still I think it's suposed to cost more than the PSP which seems crazy yet I'm still interested. I'm all for new contenders.

You're right. I was off. Just got the price list online.

Australia : $599
France : €349
Germany : €349
Ireland : €349
Italy : €349
Spain : €349
United Kingdom : £229
USA : $399

That's still $400 for a handheld though, which is just... not... an ammount of money I would even spend on a television console.

darn 400 dollars is steep....

does this have built in memory? Like an ipod? That would be a pretty fair price if it has a couple gigabytes of stuff built in.

Yeah.... the price point says no. The system LOOKS neat and has lots of neat games or so it appears. Are they packaged? Or DLable only? Cause if they're not packaged, I wouldn't touch it.

Here's a bunch of pictures from the UK launch, if anyone was interested:
http://www.gizmondoforums.com/stuff/01gizmondoshop1/index.htm

In one of the pictures, a guy sizes up the Gizmondo to his DS. It looks like the screen is nearly the exact same size, except there's only one screen on the Gizmondo, of course.

Hell yes I'm looking forward to the Gizmondo. Back at CES, I even sat down with the lead software supervisor guy and played everything in development, with code ranging from pre-alpha to final, and had a blast!

Someone mentioned being a SHMUP fan earlier? Well, I hope you like enemy patterns that repeat every stage, about eight moving objects on screen at a time, and slow, unresponsive controls, because that's what Angel Fish does best!

How about driving? There are lots of driving games for this thing. In fact, one I played was final code, and had already been released in Europe! It was awesome. You raced around as a big-wheeler. I...didn't happen to see any other racers on the track, but I'm assured there are some. Oh, when you land from a fall/jump/ramp or whatever, your tires actually sink through the terrain for a second before instantly popping back up, which is an odd feature. Oh, and if you happen to fall off of the course - which is easy to do with NO WALLS - you fall past the point where the 3D course is rendered, into eternal blue nothing.

Good game, that.

And what about Colors? God damn, am I excited for Colors. See, it's like Grand Theft Auto, except all the cars are these flat rectangles that you can't get in to. Oh, and instead of a hundred missions, there are ten. In fact, here is the exact report I filed to Gamasutra.com:

There is also a single-player mode to Colors, which takes place in its own fictional 3D world. In the early build we played, the game offered a choice of three or four very similar early 90s "gangsta" movie-type players which were used to roam around a vast, lonely 3D city looking for something to do. We spotted an extremely low-polygon car parked near a streetlamp, though efforts to interact with it proved fruitless. A few buildings had doors as well, though upon further inspection, these were just flat sprites. Occasionally a hostile gang member would step out of nowhere, initiating a fight.

Fights involve targeting the opposition and pressing the "fire" button repeatedly. Targeting is fairly intuitive, as enemies stand still until they are dead. Players can strafe to avoid gunshots, though they can't fire unless they're standing still, so getting shot up a bit is probably unavoidable. When your rival is defeated, after pumping nine-or-so bullets into his body, he falls to the ground. There is no reward for killing rival gang members, other than the inalienable right of not having bullets sprayed into your body.

We were eventually shown a short preview of a later build of Colors, though not much had changed. There was a stereotypical pimp - cane, hat, and all - standing on a street corner, who requested a vague protection service from the player. When asked a yes or no question by the pimp, the player's possible replies are "Yo was up!" and "Naw dog."

Combine this with a useless Global Positioning Satellite System, a camera that barely works, and the promise of downloaded advertisements to your portable videogame player into a $400 unit barely capable of emulating Sonic the Hedgehog, and you have a real winner.

I was excited about this till they called it "Gizmondo" x_x

Is it me or does it sound really really "dodgy"

Apart from that the GPS feature is the only one that makes me interested...
Future rarity if you ask me!

OK, to resurrect, what's the latest with Gizmondo? I would consider it for GPS alone, if it works for sh!t.

If you liked Ngage, you might like Gizmondo.

I mostly stumble on the site when I mis-type Gizmodo.com.

well since I created the topic I've kind of lost intrest. If they ever do release it here in the US I'll give a look since I love handhelds. I've picked up a DS since I made this topic sometime ago too.

Also I played Anglefish on the N-Gage and it was so-so.

I have never been a handheld fan, but the games for this one seem really unique. Not sure I will buy it at launch, but if they can make some of the unique games fun, I would be interested in picking it up. Everything from a lawnmower game (haven't seen that since Hover Bover on the C64) to some really neat looking character based games. Hope the games are as good as some of the concepts on their site.

LOL! This is a joke...

The one game that had me pretty interested was that GTA style "Colors". But after reading that small "preview" I have lost faith in it, and plus GTA:LCS for the PSP is almost here!

Sorry Gizmondo fans, but it looks like we have another Ngage on our hands.

Just an imo, looks like a decent system with modest power and a few choice titles. But it just doesn't look like it's worth the $400. I'll stick with PSP and DS for this handheld cycle.

I would have been excited about the unit if it weren't for the fact that every piece of software it runs has to be digitally signed by Gizmondo themselves, or so I am told.

For those not familiar with this, unsigned applications will not work. Homebrew applications and games, emulators...etc. Tapwave (god rest their souls) had a signing mechanism themselves, but to have a program signed by them was to allow the use of certain aspects of the hardware. Emulators were still released for use on the Tapwave Zodiac (Palm OS 5) and unsigned code can still run in this way.

The N-Gage is also an excellent platform for this reason. There is no digital signing as far as I know, hence you see all sorts of applications (Symbian OS), games and emulators that run on the unit. So sad people don;t realize that the N-Gage is not a flopped console, but a handheld PC with OTHER games out there to play. I was playing Fathammer's "Stunt Plane" on it today as a matter of fact. Cool little game! Tomorrow I'll give a go at Sky Force.

Anyway, back on what I was saying. I would have been very excited if I knew for sure that this system had that kind of potential. If it is closed, and we have to rely strictly on Gizmondo for software...well...I don't know. It really would be better as an open OS.
